In the first series of Sailor Moon episodes, Serena was always reading Sailor V comic books. There really was a Sailor V manga (comic book) series. It began slightly before the Sailor Moon series came out, and continued to run at the same time that the main Sailor Moon story was being published. Sailor V ran intermittently from Summer 1991 to November 1997. It is published in three volumes.

Sailor V manga tells of the adventures Aino Minako and her talking cat Artemis had before she met up with Sailor Moon and the other girls. Minako transformed into Sailor V, the soldier of justice, and fought to stop the Dark Agency and foil its evil plots.
