The CHAPTERS CHOICE AWARDS

Scholarships to graduating Tyler County students

June 2, 2000
Tyler Consolidated High School
Awards were presented to the following seniors:
Timothy Ray Richmond - Melvin Eugene Ferguson - Tamela Jo Steele - Heidi Lynn Mercer - James Lee McDougle - Olivia Brooke Johnston
Each one of these senior received a $100 award to put towards their college education in appreciation for the service to their community over the last four years of high school.

Each student applying for the "Chapter Choice Award" wrote a short essay about why a college education is important to them. Following, is an excerpt from two of the letters:
Olivia Brooke Johnston wrote: As a member of the graduating class
of 2000, I feel that in order to receive a successful career I need to have a further education. A College education is the most important gift a teenager could receive. I want to be successful in not only my career, but also with my personal family life. In order to take care of a family, I need a college education. With technology improving every day, the only way that one will be successful in upcoming years is to have a college education!
Olivia plans to attend Fairmont State College where she
will be part of the Cheerleading squad there. She has excelled throughout her high school career, participating as a varsity cheerleader (where she has won many awards) National Honor Society, HI-Y, Technology Student Association, Future Business Leaders of America, Coachmans Club, and Youth in Government. Her class rank was 33 out of 115.
Timothy Ray Richmond II : wrote....A college education is
important to me because a degree will help me secure a good paying job. It will supply me with the skills and the knowledge needed to make a life for myself. With todays world, I do not feel I have any other option than to get a good college education. The job market can be very difficult and I feel confident that with a degree that path would be made easier. I also feel that the knowledge learned and the wisdom gained
through this experience will make me a stronger more successful person.
Tim's class rank was 18th out of 115 graduates: his school activities include: National Honor Society,
HI-Y, Student Council, Coachmans Club, Football, Basketball,
Baseball, Intramurals.
At this time we'd like to thank the students at Tyler Consolidated High School, especially these seniors, for their help with many of the chapters projects throughout the year. Their help was instrumental in the success of each and every project we ran this year. While getting their community service hours, they have learned the reality of "The best work of life". We congratulate all of them for their past and future achievements.
