Both the above ground parts and the oil contain estragole
which shows evidence that it might be hepatocarcinogenic mutagenic.

Basil is safe when the above ground parts
are used as a spice.
It is possibly unsafe when used in larger
amounts due to the estragole constituents.

It is likely safe for pregnant or breast-feeding women
when the above ground parts are used as a spice.
