2004 LAYOUT DESCRIPTIONS

We regret that the large O Gauge layout “College Wood” has been withdrawn due to illness. We wish Ray Elwin a speedy recovery.

1. REDMOOR Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 16.5mm OO

Kevin Parkinson

Redmoor is at the end of a fictitious branch line, somewhere in the north of England. It owes its continuing existence to the local quarries along the line, trains to which have to reverse at Redmoor before entering the quarries. Redmoor is still a popular centre, hence the passenger services continue to thrive. Trains depicted cover British Railways practice from the 1950s to the 1990s, but not at the same time. At the end of each sequence the stock will be changed. Three periods are covered; 1950s, 1970s and 1990s. Therefore if your interests are not covered by the sequence running, then come back later to see your preferred sequence. Please feel free to ask questions.

2. VINE STREET (MET) Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 18.2mm EM

The Brill Group

The layout is based on the Metropolitan Line’s Vine Street goods depot, and is probably unique in being an enlargement of the original, which consisted of two sidings holding 14 wagons. A single platform serves as the City terminus of the sub-Thames East London Line service. There are three sorting siding feeding off-stage warehouses, a coal yard, and the Atlas Iron works, which is reached by a 1 in 30 incline. The period is cunningly chosen as those few months in 1912/13 when the third and fourth rails were in place but the current hadn’t been switched on.

3. PORTH EITHIN Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 16.5mm OO

Peter Midwinter

The approach to Porth Eithin station is from a tunnel and over a bridge spanning the river Tal Isaf, past the small engine shed on the right and arriving at the single platform with its bay. A small goods shed and yard are off the loop side of the line. From the loop a line runs to the harbour and a couple of sidings and then reverses back over the river to the china clay wharves where a ship is usually tied up loading china clay. Track is SMP with copper clad points and SEEP point motors. Control is by Gaugemaster. Couplings for shunting are B & Bs but on permanent coupled stock proprietary couplings are left on. Buildings are a mixture of card and plasticard construction, with Wills and Ratio items modified to suit.

4. BRIDPORT Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 16.5mm OO

Grammarail

Bridport is an end-to-end layout served by two traversers. It represents the station at Bridport, Dorset, in later British Railways days just prior to closure. We have taken a few liberties with the locomotives and rolling stock, which are more varied than would ever have been seen working to or from West Bay. All stock is drawn from members’ own collections, the vast majority of which will be commercial products with the odd kit-built vehicle. Trackwork is Peco Code 75; we decided to move away from SMP and copperclad pointwork for simplicity’s sake regarding wiring. Turnouts are operated purely mechanically with rodding and levers beneath board level. The scenery reflects the aspirations of our teenage membership, many of whom have embarked upon railway modelling within the last two years from the age of 12.

5. FORT NEVIS Scale 2mm finescale Gauge 9mm N

Martin Edmondson

Fort Nevis is based on the new station at Fort William. The period is set at 1988 when loco hauled trains were still common and the steam specials ran to Mallaig. This was a transition period from ther usual blue/grey stock to new liveries such as InterCity and railfreight sectors. Also a prominent feature in 1988 was the green and cream Mk 1 stock used on the steam specials. The West Highland line provided an interesting selection of freight services and in 1988 regular trips from Mossend Yard served the Alcan smelter at Lochaber and the Wiggins Teape paper mill at Corpach.

6. MANAFON MILLS Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 18.83mm EM

The Dymock Group

Manafon Mills represents a might-have-been branchline that left the Oswestry and Newtown Railway at Forden in Montgomeryshire, and followed the valley of the river Rhew to a couple of quarries and a lead mine, passing the Woolen mills at Manafon on the way. A passenger service was run as far as Manafon Mills. We operate the layout as it was in the late 20s, when the GWR has absorbed the branch from the Cambrian Railways. Please ask if you have any questions although, since it is an imaginary layout, you must not be surprised if we make up the answers!

7. ELSTON Scale 2mm/ft Gauge 9mm N

Stephen Fletcher

Elston is a “watch the trains go by” layout in a fictional location. The layout has taken about two years to build. Most of the stock is modern image with diesels, electrics and multiple units, which are ready to run from various manufacturers. Wagons and coaches are a mixture of ready to run and kit built. Buildings are from S & D Mouldings, Faller and Kestrel. If you want to know more, please ask and I shall attempt to answer your questions.

8. ROARKE’S LANDING Scale 3.5mm/ft Gauge 16.5mm HO

George Woolnough

A layout situated in the North West of the USA, where trains bring logs from the forests owned by the Mount Dora Ore and Lumber company to the main line. At the lower level, trains from the Great Northern RR and C.B and Q. RR can be seen winding their way over the trestle bridge at Roarke’s Landing. Please ask if you have any questions.

9. ASH LEIGH Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 18.83mm EM

David Seymour

Ashleigh is a fictional town situated in the commuter belt of the Network Southeast sector of British Rail. The period is 1985-1990, which gives the opportunity to display many of the liveries which could be seen at that time, from Blue/Grey and ‘Jaffacake’ to the NSE livery of the various units. The layout shows the station area, a heavily used stone terminal and a loco service point, while the front features some fine allotments.

10. LLUGWY VALLEY Scale 5.5mm /ft Gauge 12mm

M. Savage and M Chinery

This layout represents the junction that would have taken place between the Moel Siabod Tramway and the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway’s proposed line from Beddgelert to Betwsycoed. Had the latter ever been built, the Quarry had hoped to make direct connection with the new line close to ite own terminus at Pont Cyfyng. This connection would undoubtedly have brought about an increase in production at he Quarry and an improvement in the tramway. We have assumed this to be the case. The unusual scale was chosen by the firm of GEM in the early 1960s, when they produced a small range of Ffestiniog and Talyllyn models.

11. HARTSHILL BANK Scale 2mm/ft Gauge 9mm N

Fred Johnson

Hartshill Bank is a modern image layout. It features a double track main line with a station and town scene, which is made up from Pola kits and scratch built buildings. There are around 360 people on the layout, including two mounted police, populating the station, the old traditional market and the bus station. Look out for the deer on the hill side by the station. Further along the layout is the diesel depot, and on top of the tunnel is the leisure centre. All the track is Peco finescale and the scenic materials are Greenscenes.

12. IREBRIDGE Scale 2mm/ft Gauge 9mm British N

Halifax MRC

Named after a town in the novel “Inheritance”, the layout depicts a junction station at the head of a Pennine valley. The branch line diverges to another valley whilst the main line dives underground t Lancashire. Irebridge boasts a good number of trains each day; not many actually stop here unfortunately, and the goods yard is usually busy. The layout is built on open plywood baseboards, the track is PECO Code 80, ballasted and painted carefully to disguise its overscale appearance. Points have been modified to bring the tracks closer together. The fiddle yard can hold up to 32 trains. Please feel free to ask questions, or just chat!

13. SEVERN D’WHARVES Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 16.5mm OO

Bob Hawes

Severn D’Wharves is a fictional terminus somewhere on the banks of the river Severn. The line from Birmingham and Wolverhampton was built by the GWR, with a branch line constructed to the fictional village of Middlewich. There is a small colliery off the branch. A large postal sorting office was built next to the station, resulting in a great deal of van traffic. It is the early 1960s so the area is now largely operated by diesels of the London Midland Region of BR. The buildings are scratchbuilt, whereas the rolling stock is mostly modified proprietary items, with a few kits. It is operated to a sequence which presents the operation of this busy suburban station over a whole weekday. As we leave out the gaps between trains, we can get through the sequence in about 8 hours.

14. THE HARBOUR Scale 4mm/ft Gauge 16.5mm OO

Romiley Methodist Railway Modellers

The Harbour is a simple layout built with the assistance of the younger members of the Romiley club. It uses readily available products and materials to create a scenic setting that shows progression from the basic train set and facilitates more interesting, railway-like operations. Why not have a drive yourself?
