12/19/04 Payanig Battle of the Bands was held at the Town Plaza in Bagumbayan, Bulacan, Bulacan. The place was jampacked with rockers of different ages. Fifteen bands were listed to compete. Each band had their own style of music. Most were young kids who felt contented to do covers. Who can blame them? They were there to enjoy playing their stuff and mimic their idols.
Sando was a guest performer. They opened the night with their two original compositions. That was the first time the band played in Bulacan. Even Joel confessed that it was his first time to step in Bulacan.
The boys went up on stage after the host introduced "The Sandos". Their first song for the night was "Bayaw". The hard rockin' number surprised everyone in the town with an energetic performance from the band. I myself thought that this was an exceptionally impresive rendition of the song. When asked about it, JP simply said, "Maluwag kasi yung stage eh."
Their second and last song was "Pagpapatuloy Pa Ba?" Same as the previous one, this was also done with a lot of intensity. The ending was a symphony of guitar noise a la Sonic Youth. Waves of feedback purified the ears of the audience which left them yearn for more.
Sando made a hell of an opening. I could sense that the boys were having loads of fun that night. Rok said that this was one of their best gigs so far---the sound system was cool and the Bulacan folks were great. Too bad they only played two songs. The organizers followed a strict time management. With fifteen bands in the line up, and a lot more trying to make their way in the list, who could know when the night would end? Anyhow, the event was spectacularly a great night for music and for all the young people who always keep the flame alive.

It was a stormy day on the eve of the gig but somehow, there was divine intervention. Typhoon "Yoyong" hit Sierra Madre and the threat was dispersed by the giant, leaving a bright and cheerful day in the process. A day that brought happiness to lots of young street kids in the area. The 11th year celebration of Museo Pambata pushed through after all. This was for the benefit of the cute, little, naughty kids around the Metro.
The event started early at around 6PM. The kids hyped up the show with a cool dance number, then with an inspirational play. Afterwards, they gave an energetic performance of the song "Itsumo". Many other acts performed. The children were entertained by the Anino Shadow Play Collective, Roence Santos of Joint Project, Magicians Foundation of the Philippines and Newspaper Taxis. Cocojam did a great job with covers of reggae hits, while Blue Jean Junkies gave the young ones a crash course on good old bluesy rock and roll.
Sando played after the Junkies. It was aroud 10PM but surprisingly, the kids were still alright and awake. Their set blew the minds of the audience. They played in a semi-acoustic set up with Bro Mike on Bongos, Tamborine and Eggs, Sal used an acoustic guitar, JP on plain clean tone electric guitar, Joel used his trusty e-bow and Rok with his favorite wood-finished Washburn bass guitar.
The soundcheck was a rondalla version of "Ring Christmas Bells". All the guitarist did harmonious instrumental.
The first song was "Pananabik". The version was a Hawaiian sounding one. It makes you want to get your grass skirt and do a hula.
It was followed by "Sino Sa Aming Dalawa". It was the first time they played that song live, according to the members of the band. Their acoustic version of "Sino Sa Amin.." was great. It has a bluesy feel provided by JP, which was probably a hang over from listening to Blue Jean Junkies.
After that was their own rendition of "Christmas Alphabet". The kids felt free singing the letters out loud.
Sando was supposed to play a three-song set but the kids wanted more so there's nothing left to do but to give the simple wish of the youngsters. Their encore song was a tamed version of "Tanan" which was entitled "Sama". They sang "Isasama kita" instead of "Itatanan kita" in the chorus.
Everybody was happy after the whole event. People were left singing "Sino Sa Aming Dalawa" as a last song syndrome. The storm was strong, but music was proven to be stronger.
