Title 1 is a federally funded program designed to help students
who need extra support in basic subject areas.
In Westside Community Schools the program provides services in reading
and math to students in preschool through grade four.
Federal regulations require that funds be allocated to the schools
which have the greatest numbers of students who are financially disadvantaged,
but the services are provide ot all students within these schools who need
help. Four District 66 schools - Hillside, Paddock Road, Underwood
Hills and Westgate - have Title 1 programs.
HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED?
Kindergarten through grade three teachers, identify students in need
of Title 1 services using tests and other sources of information about
students' performance. The students determined to e in greatest need
are served. Parents are consulted before students receive services.
WHAT KIND OF SPECIAL INSTRUCTION IS PROVIDED?
The type of instruction varies. Many students receive individualized
computer assisted instruction (C.C.C.)
In other cases students receive individual and/or small group instruction
from the Reading Coordinator. Some
students participate in both types of instruction.
HOW ARE PARENTS INVOLVED?
| Each Title 1 school selects parents to serve on a Parent Advisory
Council. Council members provide valuable advice about the program
from the parents' perspective. If you are interested in getting involved
or providing information to one
of the parents on the committee please contact the school principal. Your participation will be welcome. |
