INTRODUCTION:
Congratulations! You have just
completed reading "Night of the Twister" as one of your novel readings.
Since you also live in Nebraska, you're aware of the common language about
tornadoes. You've heard of the terms 'tornado warnings' and 'tornado
watches'. If you were attending our school a couple of years also,
you had also experienced taking cover for a tornado watch. As a result
of completing this WebQuest, you will have gained a variety of information
about tornadoes such as: what are tornadoes, how are they formed,
how to keep safe if you were in a tornado or other natural disasters.

TASK:
Pretend that you have personally experienced
this tornado in Grand Island. You will work in a group of 3 and gather
information to help educate the townspeople and prepare them if this was
to ever happen again.
Your group will present this information at a town hall
meeting to the citizens of Grand Island, the mayor and special force units
such as: police and fire.

PROCESS:
1.
Your group will assign a job to each group member. The job you are
assigned to will be your focus area and the information you gather on this
topic will be presented by you. The 3 jobs are:
Your job is to give families information
on how they can keep their families safe if they were in another tornado,
different types of shelters, what to expect when a tornado hits and how
to prepare for a tornado. You will find a shelter that you feel best
suits the people of Grand Island, find out what the shelter is made of,
where it needs to be located, etc.
A visual aid needs to
be created and shown to the people at the town meeting. You could
draw the best shelter you found for the people of Grand Island on poster
board or make a 3 dimensional model out of cardboard or wood.
Your job is to gather as much information
as you can about tornadoes so you can education the people of Grand Island.
This should help the city to be more prepared if a tornado was to strike
again. You will find out the following information: What are
tornadoes?, How are tornadoes formed?, What are the results of tornadoes?
and What thunderstorms lead up to tornadoes?. You will create a visual
aid to match one or more of your learnings. You could download pictures
from various sites given, show an experiment of how a tornado forms or
draw your own on poster board.

Your job will include finding out how
to best protect your family from various natural disasters
you may encounter in the Midwest. This may include
tornadoes, wildfires, floods or winter storms. You will
need to read through all the information on different
types of natural disasters. Pick at least 3 and gather information.
Choose at least one of the natural disasters you research and make a visual
aid to present your information. You could make a poster board explaining
the important facts to know, the dangers of this natural disaster and safety
tips.
2.
You will gather information based on what job you are assigned. Using the
websites attached to your e-sheet, fill out the questions on the sheet.
You will use this information to create your visual aid, write your 1-2
page summary of your learnings and prepare your oral presentation.
3.
All 3 experts will present their information at a town meeting in Grand
Island (alias: classroom students). Your group needs to decide
how to present your information in a meaningful way so the people of Grand
Island can better prepare themselves next time.
• The
SAFETY EXPERT will explain in detail all the safety aspects of tornadoes
including the best shelter you found to be available and why.
• The
TORNADO EXPERT will inform the townspeople and give them general knowledge
about tornadoes so they have a better understand of how they develop and
what can they do to be prepared for one.
• The
NATURAL DISASTER EXPERT will inform the townspeople of other types of natural
disasters they may encounter and how to protect themselves from these disasters.

Your grade will consist of the 3 areas below:
VISUAL AID
- Create a visual aid as described above for your job. It must be
large enough so people in the
back of the classroom can easily see it. Your visual
aid must show your learnings. You will have to explain your visual
aid in detail and tell the researched facts that support what you created.
1-2 PAGE SUMMARY-
This written piece is a summary of your learnings. Your paper must
have the 3 parts: introduction, body and conclusion. Your INTRODUCTION
will tell what your job was and what information you had to gather,
The BODY will tell the facts you discovered from your research. The
CONCLUSION will include your personal reaction to your learnings and restate
your job.
ORAL PRESENTATION
- Your group presentation will be 10 minutes. How you divide up the
time between group members is up to the three of you - this will depend
on who has more to share. Each person's speech needs to have an introduction
to your topic and your job title, the body which will include the
basic facts you want the people of Grand Island to know and the conclusion
which
will briefly retell the purpose of your job and what the people should
remember from your speech.
