INITIAL READING - Beginning 1st grade - End of 2nd grade level

       Initial Reading uses colorful graphics and digitized speech to help students develop a broad range of skills from 1st - 2nd grade level.  This program concentrates on vocabulary, word attack skills and comprehension skills.
    The course consists of 6 strands:
    •  Letter Identification -This strand reinforces letter recognition and discrimination skills.
        Students may be asked to copy a letter, identify a letter, or type a letter that is spoken by the
        computer voice.
    • Patterns - This strand builds students' work attack skills through phonetic and
        structural analysis of words.
               FOR EXAMPLE:  The student may have to form a word after hearing the computer model
                                        the first one.          build    er     builder
                                                                        own      er    _______   (The student will type in the answer.)
    • Sight Words - This strand will help students' increase their ability to read words at sight.  They
        may have to pronounce and copy a single word presented on the screen.
    • Word Comprehension - This strand will help students' develop their knowledge of the meanings
        and meaningful relationships of words. They will receive practice with synonyms, antonyms,
        definitions and word categories.

    • Sentence Comprehension - This strand focuses on understanding sentences.  Each exercise will
        show a single sentence that usually will build into a story.  An illustration will be displayed
        with the sentence.   In the beginning levels the computer will read the sentence to the child.
    At later levels, the student reads the sentences independently.

   • Passage Comprehension - This strand begins about mid 1st grade level.  Each exercise contains
        one paragraph, an illustration, and a question related to the content of the paragraph.
            FOR EXAMPLE:
Rose is at the bus stop.  She is
going to school.  Soon the bus comes.
Rose climbs into the bus.
          Where is Rose going?
                 to school
                 to her house
                 to the store
