Initial
Reading uses colorful graphics and digitized speech to help students develop
a broad range of skills from 1st - 2nd grade level. This program
concentrates on vocabulary, word attack skills and comprehension skills.
The
course consists of 6 strands:
• Letter Identification
-This
strand reinforces letter recognition and discrimination skills.
Students may be asked to
copy a letter, identify a letter, or type a letter that is spoken by the
computer voice.
• Patterns
-
This strand builds students' work attack skills through phonetic and
structural analysis of words.
FOR EXAMPLE: The student may have to form a word after hearing the
computer model

• Sight Words
- This strand will help students' increase their ability to read words
at sight. They
may have to pronounce and
copy a single word presented on the screen.
• Word
Comprehension - This strand will help students' develop their knowledge
of the meanings
and meaningful relationships
of words. They will receive practice with synonyms, antonyms,
definitions and word categories.
