• Word Meaning - This strand builds
vocabulary skills by introducing approximately 350 target vocabulary words
at each
grade level and providing extensive practice with
each target word.
• Literal Comprehension - This strand
provides practice in locating information that is explicitly stated in
a brief selection.
The exercises develop the student's ability to comprehend
text on a literal level, mostly through question and answer
or sentence-combining exercises in which the student
identifies the correct answer by referring to specific information in the
text.
• Interpretive Comprehension - This
strand develops students' ability to read between the lines by drawing
inferences from
and making conclusions about a short text.
The exercises encourage the student to think beyond what is directly
stated in the text.
• Reference Skills - This strand gives
the student practice in the basic skills needed to find specific information
in a variety of reference
materials. Students will have to determine
the appropriate reference book for a particular purpose.
• Passage Comprehension - This strand
integrates the specific skills practiced in the other strands of
the course. The student will read a passage
then complete exercises that may focus on any of the strands
listed above. The reading passages may consist
of these types of literature: poetry, science, health and safety,
fine arts,
social sciences or short fiction stories.
