Mangkunegaran Kingdom

Part two

The Legend from Central Java

 Retold by Satoto Kusasi

A couple of months later King Hamengkubuwono I or Pangeran Mangkubumi wrote a letter to his son in law to invite to help him to fight against King Paku Buwono II.  There for, the letter had revealed what his trick by marrying his daughter.

King Adiprakoso was aware the Mangkubumi’s strategy, “I know what you want from me that is helping you against King Paku Buwono II, no way! I don’t want to rebel against the King of Surakarta even though he ever do something deceitful to my father; So, this marriage look like a trap to me”.    The King thought.

He promised not to bear a grudge to his uncle King Paku Buwono II as Grandpa asked him, but he give the problem in God.

Not so long after that, there was disintegration of power in Surakarta Palace that some of the Royal Family asked King Paku Buwono to resign.   So there were two fortifications, whose disagreed Paku Buwono II as a King and the other agreed about that.

King Paku Buwono II asked King Adiprakoso to help him to eliminate those rebellions, but King Adiprakoso refused since he wanted to be neutral in this situation.

“Every member of Royal Family was thirsty of power that must be God is anger and will give a punishment, since they never think about prosperity of folk, just thing about prosperous of himself each”, Said thought.   He was sad about the situation of his country.

Mas Said was aware that he was a King without Kingdom and without people, just a good trooper and also a lovely wife.      He decided to go out from Surakarta Palace, go to the forest, became guerilla against Dutch and their “dogs”.     But the lovely wife seemed refuse to go to the forest, but she didn’t reveal her objection.

“I must established a real Kingdom to save Mataram Kingdom from ruin and also to organize trooper and people against Dutch.    But land of Mojoroto is not suitable for establishing a Kingdom, so I must wait for another time and another chance”, King Adiprakoso thought.

After a moment the war broke between King Paku Buwono II against King Hamengkubuwono I.    King Hamengkubuwono along with his soldiers attacked the Surakarta Palace.   The war took three days, but King Hamengkubuwono or Pangeran Mangkubumi was unsuccessful since his alliance Mas Said and his trooper refused to help him.   King Hamengkubuwono I and his soldiers went back home to Yogyakarta as the loser.

King Paku Buwono II still existed and became the winner even though without assisting his nephew or Mas Said.

Mas Said along with the loyal follower as well as his wife, Kanjeng Ratu Bendara were staying in the forest as guerrilla against Dutch.   He was asking God to give his Hidayah, God’s guidance, in his praying and in his meditation, “God give us your guidance to win this war against Dutch and give your guidance to unite our people and their leader in a power to chasing away our enemies, the Dutch”.

Mas Said had a Religious Islam teacher whose name Kiai Kasan Nuriman.   He taught every thing about Islam religious; Kiai also asked Mas Said to meditate in the Mount Bangun to ask Wahyu (divine revelation) from God.

After he meditated, Mas Said got inspiration what his Kingdom would be.    For instance he got inspiration of Kingdom’s coat-of-arms was a Lotus in the golden cup.   And also he got inspiration about philosophy of “Tridarma” content the three concept of thinking for all of his people, they are, 1. The people should have to have their country that they had built; 2. The people should have to take care their country; 3. Each people should have encouragement to value his or her personality and encourage an action for doing the right things.

Mean while Kanjeng Ratu Bendara felt down to follow her husband into the forest; Live in the forest as guerrilla, she felt as hard days.    Added she felt frustrated above refusal of her husband to assist her father in the fighting against King Paku Buwono II, but she never mentioned about this problem to him.

One day his wife, Kanjeng Ratu Bendara asked him permission for going back home in Kartasura to meet her father and her family.     “My dear husband, I would like to go back home to my parent since I long for them, may I?”

“Of course you may, send great honor to my father in law, Pangeran Mangkubumi”, said Mas Said.   And then Mass Said instructed his staff, Suro, to guard his wife until she reach Kartasura or Yogyakarta.

Kanjeng Ratu Bendara went to Yogyakarta, but she never come back since her father forbid her to go back home since he hated with his son in law, “Suro, tell your Master that his wife will never come back again to him; I do not allow her to go back; tell him to divorce his wife right now; do you understand?” said Pangeran Mangkubumi.

Pangeran Mangkubumi thought, “he never see me if I had got mad; I want to see him how he would have been creeping on the floor in front of me and begging apology then I want to give him a punishment, a hard punishment”.

Suro came back into the forest, met Mas Said and told him what Pangeran Mangkubumi had said and also Suro gave a letter to him.    Mas Said heard the news and opened the letter then read it carefully, but he seemed not afraid as what Mangkubumi had predicted, even he also got angry with Pangeran Mangkubumi as seen of his flush face.

Then he called all of his staff for an important meeting purpose; he spoke, “To all of my friends in the group of guerrilla trooper, again we shall fight but now we fight against Pangeran Mangkubumi and his army, soon.    He had insulted us by restrained my wife; I know what is the reason that is because we had refused to assist him in his battle against King Paku Buwono.   How could my family be broken because of his political necessity? His problem is not mine even though he was my father in law.   So we have to prepare our power to fight and burn Kartasura Palace; what do you think?”

“Sandika Gusti, Yes Master, we are ready to fight; it is right to pay the insulted with punishment” said one of the trooper.

“We shall move silently at night and then we will give a sudden attack right in his Palace and burn it.     Gatot, now you go as our spy and report to us in two days”, Mas Said gave a command.   Gatot was one of his staff to whom he can rely on.

Two days later, Gatot came to report his spy result, “Sandika Gusti, the Kartasura Palace now is full with Dutch officers guarding for our attack, it seemed Pangeran Mangkubumi had predicted of our attack and it seemed he really worried about us so that he asked Dutch’s helping, even the Dutch officers were busy to build fortress just in front of the Palace”.

The session became quiet for a moment and then Mas Said spoke, “Pangeran Mangkubumi had asked the Dutch to protect his palace; so we have to cancel the attack to avoid too many victims from us but we are never afraid of Dutch again I want to stress that we are never afraid of Dutch but we must calculate benefit and loss by our action, so we have to wait other chance”.

Mean while in the Kartasura Palace the Dutch Ambassador was busy to negotiate with Pangeran Mangkubumi and their Royal family.    Frankly the Dutch was afraid of Said’s little trooper so that they had to come to discuss how to make a peace between Raden Mas Said and Pangeran Mangkubumi.

“If you don’t want to make a peace with Raden Mas Said, so I would call King Paku Buwono II in this meeting even though he was your enemy too, and I think this is the way to make a peace with all of members Mataram Royal Family”, the Dutch Ambassador said to Pangeran Mangkubumi.

Pangeran Mangkubumi was quiet for a moment, he thought, “Raden Mas Said really was an important key person, that is a fact; he couldn’t be ignored in my calculation; my figure about him was wrong indeed”

“So, what do you think?” again the Ambassador asked him.

“Yes, I agree”, said Pangeran Mangkubumi.     He kept in his mind an important question to the Dutch Ambassador but never reveal, “Why you force that peace on me rather fight against Said as I asked you?”

The Ambassador thought, “King Paku Buwono II was an important person to solve this problem since he had good relation with his nephew, hopefully he could make cool Pangeran Samber Nyowo or Mass Said in the next meeting”.

Raden Mas Said wrote a letter to his ex father in law mentioning that he agreed to divorce his wife.    The letter contained a usual letter like a son to his father as if Raden Mas Said never bares a grudge to him.   He was quiet happy since his wife wasn’t pregnant.   He also was quiet happy since he knew that his wife didn’t love him from the start of their Marrying.

The answered of the letter came a couple of weeks later, it contained a surprised news telling by   Mangkubumi mentioning that Raden Mass Said was right to propose a compensation of his divorces wife as Islam Law.

There fore Raden Mas Said asked lands west of Kartasura Kingdom, they are Kedawung, Matesih, and Nglaroh.

What was the role of Dutch in that idea, giving lands to Pangeran Samber Nyowo? The owner of this story didn’t mention.    But might happen that Dutch had force Pangeran Mangkubumi to be kind with his ex son in law since Dutch worried about Pangneran Samber Nyowo.

The Dutch Colonial invited the three leaders to attend the peace meeting in Kartasura Palace in Yogyakarta, but King Paku Buwono refused since his objection to places; he propose the place meeting in Salatiga town, seemed it was a neutral place.   The meeting was known as “Salatiga agreement” in the year 1757.     In those agreement saying that Raden Mas Said was given lands Kedawung, Matesih and Nglaroh.   The owner of this story didn’t mention how the negotiation took place, may be it took full of arguments among the four parties.

After Pangeran Mangkubumi hand lands over Pangeran Mas Said, Pangeran Mas Said inaugurated himself as a King with the name Pangeran Mangkunegara I in the age 31 years old.   He and his follower built a Palace and other infrastructure like houses, mosque, road, market and so on.    Many people from Kartasura Kingdom moved to Mangkunegaran Kindom since they didn’t like the Kartasura Palace condition with too many white man or Dutch officers.   Yes indeed Pangeran Mangkubumi made friend with Dutch colonial that was why his people hate him.
