Dark, this is the first thing you notice when she appears the first time. A slim, tender person, with black hair, large, dark eyes and a very pale skin. It seems to you that she is anemic and definitely could do with more good meals, sunshine, iron compound and vitamins. The dress she wears looks as if she has found it in a dusty chest at her grandmother's attic. She is a strange looking kid and  the word "outsider" seems to be written on her forehead with burning letters.

Is it because of her healing ability? She puts her hand above the scar on Chibi Usa's knee and it disappears in a few seconds. A girl with such powers should have a lot of friends because it shows the strength of her soul and her soft and caring heart.
Hotaru is not pleased with the lonely life she is forced to live, she would love to run around like other children, to play and to have fun. She enjoys the day she spends together with Usagi, Chibi Usa and Mamoru in the park. She plays with Chibi Usa, she laughs a lot and she is happy. Looking at Mamoru, Chibi Usa and Usagi, Hotaru remembers the time when her mother was alive, she must have died when Hotaru was very small.
Hotaru's favorite idol is an athlete called Hayase Shun. He has been very ill and weak too when he was young. But he recovered and became a famous athlete, therefore Hotaru admires him.
She spends most of her free time in her room, the curtains closed so that it is dark all the time except for the large number of lamps that she has collected. Their soft, white light make the pale, slender girl  looking even more like a ghost than a real person. The Tomoe household is a strange place to live. Hotaru sleeps a lot, she rarely leaves her room, so she doesn't know what is going on in the hidden laboratory below the house where her father and his helpers are working for her, for the person who hides in the depths of her soul and tries to take control of her. This Daimon, the most powerful of all the Death Busters on Earth, is the reason why poor Hotaru has no friends. Whenever Hotaru is not strong enough to control herself, Mistress Nine takes over her body and shows her true nature.


Her eyes glow read and her voice sounds different from Hotaru's.  She kills a little goldfish, Hotaru's pet, and hurts one of Hotaru's classmates. It is Mistress Nine and not Hotaru who grabs Chibi Usa's brooch sensing the power of  this object. No wonder that no child wants to be close to her, they are scared.
She is not kept as a prisoner but she rarely leaves her home for a long time because she could have another seizure any time. Once when she faints in the street, Usagi and Ami take her to the hospital where Ami's mother works but she doesn't have a chance to look at Hotaru because, Hotaru recovers rather fast and leaves the hospital without waiting for a doctor. What kind of strange illness does she have? Blood Cancer? Why doesn't her father tell her not to see any doctor ever? She gets some medicine from Kaolinite but it doesn't seem to help.

Kaolinite, Hotaru doesn't like her, she is the maiden and she tries to care for Hotaru, but the way she talks to the little girl with a cold voice shows that she doesn't like Professor Tomoe's daughter either. Hotaru's mother died when Hotaru was small so she can't remember those happy days well, but she can't stand the way Kaolinite sucks up to her father. It may be because of this feelings that Mistress Nine kills Kaolinite just at the moment when she has her biggest success and is of no use any more.

How did Mistress Nine enter Hotaru's soul? Well, it all began when Hotaru was a little girl. One day she was at her father's laboratory where he did some experiments but something went wrong and the lab exploded. Hotaru was killed and the spirits of the Daimons Germatoid and Mistress Nine entered the world. They promised Professor Tomoe to bring his daughter back to life if he does something for them in return. He promised to do everything and so the two Daimons took over father and daughter.
Hotaru attends the Infinite Academy, the school her father owns and the same school Haruka and Michiru go to. It is also the hidden headquarters of the Death Busters and her father is one of their leaders.

After she has been reborn again, Hotaru is a cute baby with dark purple eyes and black hair, her father has lost his memory so it seems perfectly normal for him to have a baby daughter. Hotaru herself is a happy baby, she laughs a lot and doesn't remember her other identity as Sailorsaturn although she seems to recognize Chibi Usa when they meet near the hospital.
