Wade Hampton Air Force JROTC Drill Team Finishes 9th in Nation at National Drill Meet!Wade Hampton High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC drill team finished 9th among 48 Air Force JROTC teams competing in the Air Force’s national drill championship in Montgomery, Alabama recently. The Air Force teams comprised more than half of the entire field of 85 Army, Navy, and Marine CORPS as well as Air Force JROTC teams entered from across the nation ranging from Colorado to Massachusetts. Wade Hampton finished 19th among the entire field of 85. An Army JROTC team from Enterprise, Alabama won the overall inter-service competition. The teams competed in 15 different events ranging from armed (marching routines with demilitarized rifles) drill to unarmed to color guard and uniform inspections and responding to high pressure on-the-spot questions about current events and the chain of command. The competition also included an individual competition called “unarmed knockout” which drew more than 1000. In this competition, individual cadets must act correctly, quickly and precisely to rapid-fire drill commands. Through a tough process of elimination, there were only 50 high school cadets left for the final round of the day. Wade Hampton cadets Quincy Whitner and Jeff Cobble made it to the finals and placed in the top 50 of 1000 in the nation! And Cobble placed in the top 20. The entire drill meet, sponsored by the American Legion, took the entire day starting before 8 am and finishing at about 7 pm. The 15 events, rapid fire commands, ensuring uniforms were ready and much more called on all the character, self discipline, confidence and service before self the 2000 high school students could muster. But all produced and Wade Hampton’s cadets proved their character by leading like Generals!
