Scan Bloomington/Normal
Types of Scanners
There are many different types of scanners.  Some are limited to a small amount of frequency bands, while others range from 29 mhz to 900mhz.
Obviously the less bands the cheaper the scanner.  In Bloomington and McLean County it is good to have a multi-trunking scanner because the county police (that includes Bloomington/Normal) uses a trunking radio system.  Trunking scanners are more expensive depending on how many types of trunking systems there are.  The main one are Motorola types I & II, Erricson, and GE.  Radio Shack sells trunking scanners that cover these types for about $200-300.  Unfortunaly McLean TRS uses an EF Johnson system.  Radio Shack has a Pro-92 (pictured right) that sort of picks up the Johnson system.  The problem is that it is really made for an EF Johnson MultiNet Type 1 vs. McLean's MultiNet Type II.  It runs for about $350 though.  I purchased mine on sale for only $200, so have a little patience.

McLean TRS does not perfectly fit the Pro-92's way of decoding the talk group IDs.  So it may not be the best to purchase a Pro-92 at this time.
