How to Make an Ant Cup

If you can't find an ant cup they are simple to make. The basic design is a cup that has a wire hook through the middle extending above and below it.

  1. Start with a plastic drink cup, at least 2½" across, trimmed to 1½" deep.

  2. Punch a small hole in the middle of the bottom and insert a 4" to 6" length of wire.

  3. Seal the point of the puncture around the wire with glue or hot glue to keep the water from leaking out. Now bend the top and bottom ends into a hook shape. Hang the ant cup on an "S" hook, then hang the feeder from the bottom hook of the ant cup.

  4. Put at least 1-inch of water in the cup but not up to top.

  5. Be sure to keep the water level up or they will take advantage of a dry cup to get to the feeder.

Clean out the dead bugs and dirt every so often.

Commercial ant cups come in red and green. It is preferable to use the green. The red ones confuse the birds.
