In our part of the country we put up feeders around April 1st and leave them up until early October. There is no truth to the story that you need to take down feeders on Labor Day or you will prevent them from migrating. The birds will migrate when they are ready, so leave the feeders up until you are sure they are gone - about 2 weeks after you last see one. Generally, we get 4 species of hummingbirds here. Our most common is the Black-Chinned, who nest and return each year with their families. We also have the Broad-tailed, who are mostly found in the Heights area and the mountains when it gets warmer there. The Rufous arrive in the middle of July and create quite a ruckus trying to take over the locals' territories. They stop here on their way south, families in tow, and usually stay around until mid- to late-September. Our special visitor is the Calliope, the smallest North American hummer, who passes through in late summer, usually August, on its way south. We usually spot a pair at the feeders and they only stay 1-3 days then move on. |
