This Daguerreotype of Samuel
Hewes is the great nephew of Joseph Hewes (Signer of the declaration
of independence). Samuel was born aug 8 1809. When about 45 years
old he sailed to Australia as a merchant, he was lost at sea.
Tradition has it the ship was captured by pirates and sunk. Samuel
was the brother of Elizabeth Raines Hewes Who married Samuel
