Party at Stelio's in York (5th Oct 07)

Following my exam at the end ofSeptember, I'm going to want to let what's left of my hair down, and what better way to do this than by mustering some good friends, having a few drinks and nibbles, and maybe even cracking open a game or two.

Accordingly we would like to invite you all to a party at our place. :-D

When: the weekend of Friday 5th October to Sunday 6 October (no particular times) You are of course welcome to sleep over at the flat (do let us know if you'd like to so that we can organise bedding). Turn up whenever is convenient for you. Contact Sdivision or Stelio for more info

Murder Mystery Party (13th Oct 07)

Advanced warning that i'm planning a murder mystery evening/house warming at my new flat. Oh ok, it's the same one as the one i was renting, but now it's mine, all mine - mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Anyway - it'll most likely be on Sat 13th October. (or if no-one can come, then i'll change the date)

It'll be a bit of a change from the normal 'sit round the table and read from the book' murder mystery, as these ones have no script, and people have more aims than just finding out who is the murderer. So basically you have to be a character all evening and go round and mingle with other people.. or backstab other people... depending on how the mood takes you - it's all up to you. But costume will be compulsory! : )

So this email is an attempt to find out who might be free and wants to come along for an evening of foolishness, food and drink, so i can get an idea of numbers. if you can let me know by the 16th september, that would be great.

New Year Social

The end of 2006 is nearly upon us and to celebrate the end of it and the start of 2007, S-Division will celebrate in usual style. After months of anticipation the venue has finally been decided upon. Drum roll please.... This years New Year will be held at Mark and Louisa's and will double up as a house warming party for them. They have spent the last month removing the 'interesting' decoration inside - rather bravely they are now having us round now that they have it almost finished- so Dan is banned from bringing any jelly.

The theme of the evening will be a masked 'ball' type event (Kim this doesn't mean you turn up in just a mask), no idea behind the logic of this, I presume they just didn't want to spend the start of the year looking at us? They would like people to arrive mid afternoon on Hogmanay, please bring with you drink for the evening and some food. We plan to have a sort of buffet in the evening, so something for this would be great.

The next morning Mark and Louisa have kindly volunteered to cook the first meal of the New Year for all of us. There is plenty of space, three spare rooms, lounge and two very large sheds (for anybody who snores / Louisa won't have in the house). As Mark and Louisa are cooking on the Monday lunchtime / want to know how many people are invading their house they would like an idea of the number of people who are coming. They haven't got e-mail access at the moment (so I can say what I like about them in this e-mail) so if you could let me know (or S-Div) in the next SEVEN days if you are able to make this years New Year Spectacular.

2nd December - Two Parties

No parties for ages and then two come along at once.

Option 1 - Dave's Birhtday

I will be having my birthday party this coming Saturday the 2nd of December at 7pm at my place in Fleet.

Please bring yourselves plus anyone else you wish, plus a bottle of your favourite drink.

The theme is come dressed as your favourite song. Make it as obscure as you like. There will be a prize for the best entry and for who ever can guess the most songs that other people dress as.

Option 2 : Stelio Leaving Party

I'm moving to York. This is because I have been offered a job there, and I'll be starting at Norwich Union before Christmas. My last day at Skandia is 1 December, and then I've got two weeks between jobs to clear my flat and move up to Yorkshire. This is my cunning plan.

But I can't just slip off quietly in a sneaky and underhanded way. Instead I must mark the occasion by offering alcohol to everyone I know. And so I will host a party at my flat on Saturday 2 December.

In fact, I actually need your help. I've got quite a lot of stuff, and I need to lighten the load a bit. You can do your bit by helping me to empty a few bottles that I've got lying around. You know the ones; full of brightly coloured alcohol and just waiting to be drunk. I am taking *none* of them with me. Whatever is not drunk by the end of Saturday, I offer to whoever wishes to claim them. I suspect that Jo and Rachel (as my closest nieghbours and within staggering distance) will inherit the bulk of my booze, if they so wish to have it. :-)

So yes: party at mine, Saturday 2 December, booze, food, games. Please come. All invited (including various other folks that you don't know but I do).

17th December - Party
Next Saturday, 17 December, I will be hosting a party at my flat. It will follow the usual formula: I will provide copious amounts of alcohol and assorted snackage. Turn up any time in the evening. Say, from 7pm onwards? Food will be by take-away for those that are interested.

Also as is traditional, there will be a theme: the dress code is "Games". Following on from (Dr) Dave 3's gambling-themed party for which some of the costume ideas generated did not fit the definition, I've opened up the arena to include games of all kinds. And given how many games most of us have played, I'm sure that we'll see some interesting fancy dress concepts.

If you want to invite anyone else, feel free. If you'd like to sleep over then that's okay too (although I'd appreciate warning in advance so that I can organise bedding). If you want to buy me flowers just go ahead now. If you'd like to talk for hours just go ahead now. Back to top
BBC Jammin

Yes Once again its that time of the year when The BBC try to prove that comedy is the new rock and roll..........

Rowland Rivron and his band along with mystery guests will be recording the new series latere this month and into May.

Ive put in a bid for tickets for 2 gigs ( On Tue 18th April and Tue 2 May )

1st December - Games Night

What does the first of a month call for? Other than a pinch and a punch for Dan of course. Board games!

Thanks to the esteemed Mr. Stelio, a board games session will be held on the evening of Thursday 1st December at his house in Soton. While we have created two player Betrayal, it would be nice if some other people could join us.

S Division and The Holy Grail

This is advanced notice of the big S-Div trip pencilled in for the second May Day Bank Holiday.

For those of you who know all about this, I hope you have your coconuts at the ready, for the rest of you prepare to go out and buy cuddly bunny rabbits, or even to construct giant wooden badgers.

The plan as it stands is to fly up to Glasgow (from which ever airport in the UK is most convienent for you), from where we will amas, gather out horses (coconuts) and charge North East to Doune Castle (also known as Swamp Castle / Castle Anthrax, in fact almost every castle in the entire film), although to stop the horses getting tired, we may very well hire a car / bus from Glasgow airport. We may even storm the castle with a giant badger, as we know already that giant bunny rabbits are no good.

We will then charge West to Loch Tay and search for the elusive cave, somewhere on the South bank of the loch, guarded by a small white rabbit. Also the location for scene 24. Obviously as these are the best directions we can find this provides S-Division the greatest chance of getting lost.

From here we will travel further West to Rannoch Moor and Glen Coe, in a search for Tim the Enchanter and a rather rickerty bridge. No doubt plenty of opportunity for climbing a tall thing here.

Then lastly down to castle Aaargh, the only castle which isn't Doune caste in the entire film (or a model).

No doubt there will be plenty of opportunity for meeting completely mad people/ terrible terrible acting / drinking tea and fine beers from Scotland. I also hear the 'water' is good to.

The details are being carefully planned, as we speak, by the S-Div and the Holy Grail Organising committee, who will no doubt end up throwing something together at the last minute, but you never know. Watch this space

P.S. Any questions ask Dan.

Coctail Party

Right then chaps and chapesses, it's high time that I hosted another of my popular cocktail parties. Apologies for what is (for me) short notice, but I plan to hold it on Saturday 8/10/2005. I'm mooting 4pm as an interesting start time, and I plan to continue as long as I have company and am conscious. Naturally anyone who wishes to stay over is welcome, and if you warn me in advance I can arrange bedding for you as well.

In terms of what is on offer, I have a stock of curious and motley beverages which you are free to consume (possibly even in the dangerous jelly form). Doubtless there will be the obligatory order for take-away food at some point. I can also entertain you with a selection of audio and/or video stimuli, and a plethora of fine games.

As to dress code, I'll have to get back to you on that one. I have had a couple of requests, and I must consult with potential attendees to ascertain what will be the best option. Rest assured I shall let you know as soon as I am able to confirm. And I promise Wednesday night at the latest, so that there will be at least some short preparation time. My profound apologies for this unavoidable situation.

Now I'm open to visits from strangers, and also friends, so do feel free to pass on this happy news to any that you believe would be up for a little get together. I look forward to the happy day, and even more so to seeing you all again.

Contact S-Division for more info

Birmingham in July

As Mark pointed out last weekend there are no socials planned until the possibility of camping in September, which is a long way away. So to keep us occupied until then can I have a show of hands for anybody interested in coming up to Brum for the weekend, before you go urggh Birmingham, what could we possibly do there I have the following suggestions:

1 - Tall Thing, in the form of the big green tall thing, all 1,000 ft of it at Malvern (45mins on train)

2 - Chocolate, go to a choclate factory and then see what a chocolate factory should look like, complete with rivers of chocolate and ommpa lumbas on the big screen.

3- Warwick castle, see jousting and the worlds biggest catapult at the moment (maybe we could experiment to see which member of S-Division flies the furthest).

4 - Curry, you can get this in Birmingham, everywhere, of varying quality.

5 - Any other suggestions Humphrey our Brummy expert can come up with

The best thing about Birmingham though is its status as a transport hub, you can get here by plane, train, car and even boat (despite being in the centre of the country). Which also means, often more importantly it is also easier to get away from.

How many would be interested for July 30/31 ?

I can't quiet see, mmm, maybe not a show of hands then, perhaps you should drop me an e-mail.

The Now Show

The NOW show is back on the radio, and for those of you who don't know, A fine show it is too !!!

Yep, sunny Portsmouth, but it wil still be a night of the finest topical comedy with at least 2 sparkly new songs from Mr Mitch Benn.

I have got 6 tickets for the show on Aug 11 ( possibly the final show of season ? ) so who wants to come ???

Show: THE NOW SHOW
Date: Thursday August 11th
Time: 19.30
Venue: The Kings Theatre, Southsea, Portsmouth

Dr Evil's Trip to Spitbank

Instead of going to Poppadom express in July for celebrations as previously planned, how's about this for an idea...

I have discovered that Spitbank fort, one of the 4 round forts which Lord Palmerston built in the solent to protect Portsmouth Harbour from those evil FRENCH, is available for parties etc. and sunday lunches. Their website is at...

http://www.spitbankfort.co.uk/sundays.htm

For £16.50 you get ferried to the fort from either Gosport or Pompey, you get to visit the fort and then you get a two course meal including spit roast chicken, jacket spud, salads and dessert. There is also a veggie dish available if necessary.

The boat sets off around midday and leaves the fort at either 3pm or 4.15, so dudes travelling from afar should have loads of time to get home in the afternoon.

How does that sound? I'm thinking in terms of Sunday 10th July with a back up plan of August.

Crouching Dragon Hidden Tiger

No Im not suggesting a marshal art homage. Well I mean we could as well if you wanted but that would be another matter.

No this idea is much better.

As you may know, That fine institution the London Zoo has just installed a brand spanking new Komodo Dragoon enclosure, with a great long glass side so you can crwal along with the afore mentioned creatures. So thats the crouching Dragons taken care of.

As for tigers, well S division love a good tiger, and we all know that tigers do have a tendence to be rather allusive in zoo's so that the hidden part sorted.

Therefore we sould go. ( well it would be rude not to )

So next sunday, the 22nd we should go up to london for a day of fun and frolics with zoo's lunch and beer aplenty, and being a sunday afternoon at the zoo we could also tie in a evening wasted heckiling at speakers corner.

Train from central @ 09:15 gets in to Waterloo at 10:43. Then we could make our way over to the Zoo ( IT IS AT THIS POINT THAT i SHOULD POINT OUT i HAVE ABSOLUTLY NO IDEA HOW TO GET TO THE ZOO !!!! Not been in years !!! But You know - impecable sense of direction an all - What could go wrong !! ) This should mean we get to the zoo at around .. : .. ( I guess it won't take more than Hour so well call it 11.30 ish )

so whose with me. Come on you know it makes sense.

Hob Nobbin

Or Jammy Dodgers.

Yep its a reminder that there are three free tickets up for grabs for a recordin session for Jammin up for grabs for FRI 20TH MAY.

Yes another in a series of unique epidodes where not only will a team of 'gifted ' celebrities attempt to prove that comedy is the new rock n roll whilst effortlessly doding audience heckles and seamlessly building them into the show.

Rumour has it that joining Rowland Rivron on the night will be at least one member of Ocean Colour Scene, so you can hob nob in the bar without the need to blag your way into a sound check, cos the drill hall bar was built for hobbin, and the Jammin crew are some of the Hobbiest cast members in the business !!!!!!!!!!

I suggest that you should join me for much merriment, a typicaly large amount of hobbin, a bevy or two, a bite to eat at the very nice Thai place known as Squigle nearby and then more fun and frolics in our fair capital on a friday night !!!!

Dan House Warming Party

Dan has just moved into a new flat and is having a big housewarming party on Saturday night. The theme, as it is Dan, is a Kids party, you will need to bring jelly, ice cream, cakes, crisps, drink, sweeties, did I say cake. Entertainment is being provided by Dans apparently (and no supprise here) extensive kids DVD collection, including, the Muppets (no comment), Dogtanian and the Muskerhounds, Dangermouse, Ulysese and umh Dr Who, etc.

Before I continue, try not to think about the number of times Dan has been in your own home and snorted jelly up the walls, split red wine over the carpets or has knocked things over with huge sweeping arm movements - this party is not an excuse for revenge.

See you all Saturday, Dans House from 7:00

Cocktail Party
Save a space in your diary for the evening of Saturday 22 May...

It's been a long time coming, but here it is: another cockatil party at my flat! For those amongst you who have yet to be initiated into the collective, be prepared to taste alcoholic wonders the like of which you have never seen before. Home to the vodka candle and the truly remarkable "green with pink spots", Stelio's flat is a haven for bizarre beverages, both spirit and liqueur.

And this time I have reason to celebrate, for not only are my most recent set of exams behind me (don't ask: the results aren't until July) but ALSO I've recently started a new job! So I would be delighted if you would care to join me as I let my hair down (it's a long drop) and party the night away.

FOOD!

Yes, there's more to life than drinking (a shock, I know, but it's true). If you wish to you can also some along for a meal beforehand. The plan is to partake of a sumptuous feast at the nearby Chinese eatery, Kachina. Participation is not mandatory; you can just come for the booze if you so desire.

The plan is to meet at my flat around 7pm say and stroll down the road to eat at 7:30. We'll be at least an hour, I would guess, so if you're not eating with us don't turn up at my flat until 9pm. If you are coming to eat, you absolutely *must* let me know in advance because I'll book a table. In fact make sure you tell me by Thursday as I'll book the table on Friday.

I hope to get you drunk very soon...

Stelio.

Noodles
Yes. Its another slightly bizare subject that will soon mean something.

Noodles.
We all love em, but no one loves them more than self proclaimed Noodlemeister,

Mr Ross Noble.

He likes them so much that he has named his new show, Noodlemeister.

This show comes to The Anvil, Basingstoke ( And trust me this is as close as it comes )

On
July 8th. We should go.
Cost: £15
Date: 8/7/4
Let me know if you want to join in the fun cos I want to get tickets asap.

Beer, more Beer and Batman
Well as many people are doubtless aware there are no less than 4 important events taking place in that timeframe.
1. June 17th - Batman Begins general release
2. June 16th-18th Southampton beer festival
3. June 13th? Dan's birthday
4. June 19th My birthday.
Can these all be combined into some giant celebration of goodness? I think so.Friday 17th,Beer festival, Southampton guildhall 6.30 - 11pm Entry >Price: £6.00* Entertainment: Swamp Things (Rockabilly)I've chosen the Friday cos I think Rackabilly will be more fun with beer than 60's revival on the Sat. If everyone wants to complain and choose a one of the two slots on Sat they can do. Of course, for some inexplicable reason not everyone likes beer so not being the exclusionary types, I think on the Saturday we could do some normal drinking in a pub after (so we don't need to wee) going to see Batman Begins. All those in favour say Aye.

Smurfin Beer
Beer, Beer, Smurfin Beer. You don't Get drunk and it isn't Dear !!!!

Classic song that.

Unfortunatly Real Beer unlike the above frequently gets you drunk and it can be dear !!!
Therefore every opportunity should be taken to enjoy many good beers at remarkably cheap prices which is why the Southampton Beer Feastival is such a good event !!!!

Its going to be JUNE 3RD,4TH, 5TH, 6TH.

As always I suggest the cheap and no frill Preview session. £3 on Thursday night. Although you run the risk that a few beers may not be ready yet, its better than the crowds and the higher price !!!

So. June 3rd. £3. Bargin. I'll be there.

This year for the first time the Stile are allowed to sell tickets having been regonised by Camra as a reasonably good pub for beer. this makes getting tickets far easier, ( As long as theydon't sell their allocation too quickly !!! ) For those who definatly want to go. Let me know and I'll get a block of tickets.

Thats all from me.

Anja Visiting (Excuse to visit the pub)
For those of you who have been in Southampton far longer than any rational person should be, will remember Anja, a fencer who was here in Southampton three years ago. Anja was also priveleged enough to be on the first ever international S-Division Social to that Great Nation to the North.

Anyway before I go off on a tangent. Anja has just finnished Uni in Germany and is coming back to Southampton to visit for just a few days later in the week (Wed to Sun). For anybody that's interested in either seeing Anja in her brief visit, or in having a drink because it's Friday we thought we'd meet up in the Crown at 7:30 on umh Friday.

In Summary
When : Friday (27th Feb)
Time : 7:30
Place : The Crown

(Optional)
Bring : Cake if you feel the need.

Jims Birthday
This Friday we have cause for celebration, as it's Jims Birthday. After giving it much thought and deliberation as to what sort of venue would best suit Jim and after rejecting many brilliant suggestions, I have decided that gong to the pub would be best!

So this Friday (20th), so that Jim and the the rest of the Langerhorn Road Mob don't have too far to go, I suggest meeting at Talking Heads at 8:00. After that if we want to move on anywhere else I suggest we play guess the age. Whoever manages to guess correctly (or is closest) to Jims age in days gets to pick the next venue (there may also be a mystery bonus prize as a small incentive).

So in summary Talking Heads 8:00 Friday.
If anybody feels the need the bring cake, I'm sure this won't be a problem!!

Recording of BBC's Jammin
Do you like a good JAM ?,

I do.

Especially if said jam involves some top muscians and comedians doing silly things with instruments.

Yes, One of my favourite radio shows is back, and yes I do indeed have the dates for the recording sessions.

Last time we attendid a session: Simon found a new national anthem in the form ' Caledonian Rhapsody ' I found a new base heavy version of a popular TV theme and Jamie, well due to a rather fundemental mistake, Jamie found himself at an REM gig ( This was down to a simple error involving eighties legend Nick Kershaw, and Micheal Stipe )

BUT. Fun was had by all.

Therefore, I suggest we go. On either FRI MARCH 19TH, OR FRI MARCH 26TH ( or even both !!!! )

Tickets are Free.

Tall Ship Racing
Just an idea for a social for the more adventurous of you all.

The sail training association of Portsmouth own and run two tall ships throughout the year. They sail from and to different locations depending on which week you decide to book.

General details and winter/spring sailing schedules can be found at... http://www.sta.org.uk/home.asp. My iaido sensei has been on one of these holidays and said it was absolutely amazing. Hence why I am suggesting it now.

The ship is run by a core crew of experienced sailors. But basically once on board, you actually become part of the crew as well and get allocated to a shift (including night shift) and actually take part in sailing the ship.

I guess it's probably pretty hard work, and probably not recommended to those who get seasick easily, but it has potential to be an awesome holiday.

Lets set our sights on that trip, PW263, on the Prince William, 1-4th Nov, £299. I guess the sooner we arrange ourselves, the more chance we have of booking successfully. Anyone else interested, shout up quick.

I'm having a PARTY! And you *know* what that means. That means alcohol, it means dressing up, it means *the* social event of its class, and it means alcohol too. I thought I'd have a party, since all my exams will be over (oh, and it's my birthday too) so please come and celebrate my liberty in the traditional style.

Full details can be found at:

Siyou nara Simon San

Simon cherishes organising socials in the name of people who can't be there. Indeed, I apparently miss many of the best ones cos I'm "up North at a wedding". To honour this fine tradition of acknowledging those not present, we (so far me, Dan and Jim) are going to see Terminator 3 this Friday for a Simon's not here social since he is unfortunately "up North at a wedding." Film starts at 9pm at UGC. I will book some tickets based on known numbers so e-mail myself or S-Division and I'll add you to the list. Those wanting to eat first should be at pizza express on Oxford Street by 7pm.
bye bye

Arrgh A Kims Here Social

I am in Southampton this Friday (20th June) for my 22-month viva, and should be finished late afternoonish. I propose meeting in the Stile after work (5:30-ish onwards).

After a disasterous game of University Challenge, I feel the need to play games not involving general knowledge.

Does anyone want to play games? I of course have Dungeonquest, Aquarius and Fluxx but also some new ones you (and I) haven't played yet - Citadels (an odd game of bluff, for up to 6 players) and Dungeoneer (like dungeonquest but with an absolute limit of 4 players, and you get to plague other players with demons). Both are easyish to learn and play out in around an hour.

Dave and Simon have sort of volunteered their front room but if anyone else could volunteer somewhere for us to play game sin (great typo, thought I'd leave it in) or floor space for me to sleep on, that would be great.

Could people interested in playing games please let me know? It'd be good to have some idea of numbers.

Dans Birthday

Friday is Dan's birthday. Due to some of us having to get up unsociably early to get a flight Saturday morning, I'm afraid there are no big celbrations planned. However, we can't let him sit and sulk at home alone. So the suggestion is we join him - not in the sulking part.

From 8:00

Video Night at Dan's - experience one of the worlds most comfy sofas (if you get there early enough).

Very importantly bring birthday cake!!

Paragliding
(Was rescheduled due to bad weather)
To all gravity defying folks...

There is a centre on the Isle of Wight that do 1 or 2 day taster courses. I think it involves training in safety, ground handling and lots of running up and down hills trying to miss the ground. The cost will be £85 for one day tuition

See http://www.high-adventure.uk.com/ for more information.

We need to bring:
*boots with ankle support and good tread eg walking boots. NOT trainers.
*loose fitting clothes and long trousers
*a packed lunch and plenty of water. There are no shops there!
*Sun tan lotion.
They say "be prepared for a variety of weather conditions". Not sure to what extent, as any extremes of weather mean it won't be flyable.

Finally, I need to know who is definately going, and your weight!
If you want to go on the 14th August, e-mail Nick G, or S-Division asap.

Scotland III

Yes, it is that time of year again when thoughts turn to getting away from the daily slog that is 'work' and getting on the the fun that is 'HOLIDAY!' - yay!

Indeed, i am opting for some fantastic scenery and wilderness in the area of the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland. Picking this area means there is tonnes to see and do, from watersports and climbing, trekking through forests and up mountains, ruined castles to practise those fencing swashbuckling moves. *Plus* glens, lochs, reindeer, and even a spot of Nessie hunting perhaps.

Vague plans are for 1 week, self catering, at the end of July (19-26). Plan is to fly up and hire a car once up there. So far, 'tis myself and housemate Jane, plus possible friends or hers, so i thought i would email you lot to see if it appeals to anyone.

I can't promise soaring temperatures or bikini clad women i'm afraid, but if some good old wilderness appeals, then email me to register interest.
