This issue of the AV Archives Bulletin will greet delegates to the IASA/SEAPAVAA conference in Singapore in July. For many of

you reading this, it may be your first introduction to SEAPAVAA.

The conference may also be your first "close encounter with the activities of individual audiovisual archives in South East Asia and the Pacific, and I hope it will be a memorable one. The SEAPAVAA family is a unique and dynamic professional network: we believe in the value of our work and we enjoy getting together at our annual conference to encourage one another in it.

The Singapore conference is a very special occasion for us. For the first time in our short history, we are sharing it with another association. Preparing for the event with our colleagues on the IASA Board and our hosts at the National Archives of Singapore has been a rewarding experience and has allowed us to create an exciting conference program on a scale that neither association could have achieved separately. The opportunity for IASA and SEAPAVAA members to meet each other and extend their respective networks is a rare one, and I am sure we will all take full advantage of It. We are glad to welcome our IASA friends to South East Asia for the first time, as, at the dawn of the second audiovisual century, we explore the many facets of our theme: "A Future for the Past".

In our field, conferences work on many levels: information exchange, networking, factfinding, socializing. All are important. They are also strategic occasions during which various segments of the global audiovisual archiving movement can review where they are heading: separately or collectively. Our field is rapidly evolving and I believe the future will increasingly be one of cooperation and complementation -- between Individual archives, between associations, and with the film, broadcasting, and recording industries with whom we are so closely linked. "A Future for the Past” will, I believe, rest as much on our interdependence as our independence -- and understanding the roles we are each best suited to play.

I hope the conference, the contacts, and the news in this Bulletin will spark a clearer vision of a shared future. The challenges and the possibilities have never been so great.
