DADDY CHESS AND KIMANI ARE KING AND QUEEN OF DOMINICA CARNIVAL
MAS DOMNIK 2001
21 year old Kimani Felicite of Paix Bouche village, north of Dominica was crowned Carnival Queen 2001 and won the title of Miss Dominica 2001 among seven contestants on Friday February 23. The Cable and Wireless sponsored beauty also won five awards including Miss Amity, Miss Photogenic, Best Talent, Evening wear and swim wear. Letricia Cadette of Morne Jaune, a creole announcer at DBS placed 2nd and received the best costume and intelligence awards. Ms. Cadette's costume entitled Quick Silver-transforming darkness into light was designed by Darnley Guye. Ms. Ardene Shillingford sponsored by DOWASCO placed third. Her costume was awarded the best built costume for the portrayal of Lord Solo's Mas in de Cemetery.

Observer's "Spirit of Carnival" is declared Road March 2001
Davidson Victor,de Observer from Mahaut has won the 2001 Road March with his "Spirit of Carnival" that had the popular Lavwe "Y pa ni un fete con Mas Domnik"(There's no party anywhere like Mas Domnik). Daddy Chess, this year's Monarch came close in second place.

Daddy Chess, (Chester Letang), the son of Swingin Stars drummer,Esmond Letang emerged as the winner of Saturday(Samedi Gras) Calypso Monarch Finals.
Chess defeated last year's monarch Hunter who placed second and Scrunter who placed third among twelve contestants who were all favored to win.
The calypsos were of such a high standard that the competition became very difficult to judge. Daddy Chess calypsos were "Your destiny depends on you" and "Somebody has to pay", the latter composed by veteran musician, Pat Aaron. Hunter's contribution was "Donkey has no right in horse race" and "Rest In Peace" ,the latter paying respects to the late PM. Rosie Douglas. Scrunter delivered a well received "Ah En Coming for Crown" and "I surrender." De Observer (Davidson Victor ) placed fourth. Meanwhile guest calypsonian and 4 time calypso King , Lord Solo who entertained the crowd with his "Mas in de Cemetery" gained more popularity as a Road March contender,although he can't win with an old old song.. Other prospects for Road March are Observer's "Spirit of Carnival", Hunter's "Donkey" and "Ah Feelin to" , Chess's "Ssomebody has to Pay" and also Mico (Portsmouth's King) with "That Old Man".
Mas Domnik 2001 brought out the major Carnival bands, Carnival Corner's Rainbow Magic 2001 and Thunderbirds "Lights" band depicting an array of magnificent colors on Monday Feb.26 . Next day, Tuesday Mardi Gras,Carnival Corner came out with "Ole Mas" portraying Sensay, Souswell Souri and Matador. While Thunderbirds delivered with their "Souswell Souri" band.

CARNIVAL CORNER GOES TO MARTINIQUE TO PROMOTE RAINBOW MAGIC
Following the lauching of the Carnival Band, Rainbow Magic 2001 at the Springfield guest house last year,on Sunday October 22, Carnival Corner will again have another brunch on February 11. 2001. According to band leader Mr. Vincent L. Titre Jr. Music will be supplied by The Swingin Stars.
This weekend Carnival Corner will be heading to Martinique to promote Rainbow Magic on Saturday January 27. The group had formerly launched "Return of the Sensay" in 1995.

SCRUNTER AMONG CALYPSONIANS QUALIFIED FOR FINALS
Four Calypsonians from last years finals are prepared to do battle with Calypso Monarch Hunter at the Finals on February 24 in Dominica. There were ties with four calypsonians in the semi finals on Feb 10. The four from last year are Scrunter,Daddy Chess,Senator and Observer. Scrunter had won top points in the Calypso Quarter Finals held a few weeks ago with his catchy tune "Ah yen come for Crown" . The other calypsonians scheduled to go for the crown are Spider, De Bobb,Bouteille,Bassie, Haxey,Ghost and Checker. The others who didnt make to final included , Mico,3rd eye,Sharp tooth, Black Starliner, Soul Puss,Soca(Young)Bull,Man Himself and Masked Eruption.
MAS DOMNIK 2001 OPENS
MASDOMNIK 2001 officially opened under the theme "Festivity and Fun for Mas Domnik 2001" Sensay groups from all parts of Dominica including the Black Devils with their whips from Laplaine and Darkies from Grandbay accompanied the costumed bands and advertising floats. 2000 MONARCHS, Queen Darna Roberts and Calypso King, De Hunter arrived abord a coast guard cutter amid fanfare and wailing sirens.They ushered in Carnival Queen contestantsand the participating groups and led the parade
from the Bayfront, through the streets of Roseau to Carnival (Festival)City. click for more

"Lovely Dominica" which was recorded by The Gaylords on their first album? (clue.. His last name starts with a "J" ) Well the answer to that is the well known long time DBS radio station Manager
Denis Joseph who had managed and wrote most of the lyrics to the songs of the Gaylords Power Union.
