RISING DAMP

This popular sitcom based on Eric Chapell's stage play "The Banana Box" revolved around the landlord and tennants of a seedy lodging house in northern England.

Richard's part was of the long haired student Alan Moore who would tease his landlord Rupert Rigsby - played by Leonard Rossiter - in return for all the comments made against his typically youthful appearance and behaviour. He was welcomed into his new lodgings by Don Warrington who took the part of medical student Philip. Rigsby was also constantly having a go at Philip on the grounds of him being coloured, and Philip took great delight in teasing him by turning Rigsby's uneducated prejudice back on itself.

The only tennant not victim to the landlord's prejudice was the lady tennant he had a crush on, Ruth Jones. Frances De La Tour was perfect at carrying out the role of Rigsby's slightly dizzy love interest who adored her fellow tennants but never had any interest in her landlord despite his constant advances. Alan and Philip were her constant friends, always teasing Rigsby about the advances he always made towards Miss Jones that she never even seemed to notice, leaving Rigsby to mutter disgustedly about her behaviour with the many men she did pay attention to.
