United Deliver Last Punch

Slugfest ends with United on Top 5-4

Stephens City, VA -- ODFC United and Epic 88 were two teams challenging for a trophy near the top of the division.  Only one team would be still alive for it after today.  Both teams played aggressive, creative soccer on this day.  But it turned out to be another glorious day for the red, white, and black.

Both teams, talented and smart, traded goals all game long, but United got the final word when Britt overlapped the forwards and knocked the ball inside the far post for the victory.

"Games like this are why I coach," said a very happy United coach.  "We attacked with fury and creativity today.  The forwards were particularly brilliant today, but let's give a hand to our midfield and back line because they had to play full tilt soccer for 90 minutes."

The game got under way with United winning most 50/50's and building beautiful attacks.  They opened the scoring when Rachael found LC through and she finished it by chipping the charging keeper.  Epic answered on a breakaway that was just barely onside if at all.  United took the lead back when Kara juked the keeper and calmly passed it into the empty net.  But before half, Epic got behind a confused United back line and beat Zoe for the equaliser.

"At halftime, we reflected on the fact that our sporadic finishing was keeping the opponent in the game, but also, Zoe's great saves were keeping us in the game."

The second half had United playing into the wind, but the spotless pitch also allows United to show off their great ground game.  And that's what happened, but not without some high drama.

Rachael and Jessica continued their dominance in the midfield, making nice runs with the ball and also finding Britt, Kasey, and Kate out wide.  The outside mids did their part to remain disciplined out wide, but also dangerous, carrying the ball themselves.

Kara scored her second to put United up 3-2 but naturally, Epic tied it again on great shot that just got past Zoe's reach.  It stayed 3-3 for a while, then came the prettiest score of the match.  The ball was played out of the United backfield and Rachael ran onto it with pressure.  She one touched onto Jessica who read it all the way and took it on stride.  Rachael made the run back up field and received the ball on the 18.  She then fit it through a space, that had to have been no bigger than the ball itself, to a running LC who one-touched it over the keeper's head for United's 4th lead at 4-3.

Game over right?  Not so fast, United did not get an offside call and Epic tied it again.  It seemed destined to end in a tie.

Game over right?  Not so fast.  With 5 minutes to go, Britt, making another gorgeous overlap, took a lead pass and slotted it home for a 5-4 lead.

Game over right?  Elena got the defense organized and United clogged the center of the field enough to hold out until the final whistle.  This leaves United one victory away from a runners-up finish and a trophy in the seniors' last season.

"Allowing 4 goals would make you think that our backs and keeper played poorly, but that is not the case.  Greta, Stacy, and Elena had to play all 90 minutes, plus, Zoe was forced to make several saves on her line rather than coming out.  It must also be mentioned that three girls in particular, Rachael, Kasey, and Jessica were playing with very sore ankles, yet you wouldn't know it."

"Yes, the forward play was the best I'd seen this season, especially against a formidable opponent.  And even though Katyna didn't score, she is setting teammates up left and right."

Coach Sheehan wrapped it up with the following:  "When we assembled the team we have today, I told you guys that I'd rather win 5-4 than 1-0.  Our philosophy has always been to try to score at the risk of getting scored on.  That's the natural rush we get.  We play on the edge.  We can do that because we are so well-rounded and our girls put on that United shirt and play with supreme confidence."

Ugly Still Counts

United Squeak By Pesky Lazers

South Riding, VA -- United finally prove that ugly can still pay the bills.

The Sterling Lazers came into Sunday's game with possibly their last chance to finally beat United after several tight games in the history of the rivalry.  Well, this game was no different...in competitiveness and in final result with United on top 2-1.

Coach Sheehan--"I was tired of these games at Little River in which we dominate possession but have no room to get shots off.  So we played a 3-3-4 to stretch the defense horizontally.  A coach would probably get fired for playing that shape, but we have great confidence in our team.  Plus, the best defense is a good offense.  And we've got that at every position."

LC scored the opener midway through the first half, but the Lazers punched in a loose ball in the second half.  United gathered themselves and found Candice for a goal...once again, on the back post.  United were able to keep the pressure on up front from hustling forward play.

"It is very difficult to put teams away at Little River but we got it done today.  Though, the Lazers really fought, and we were lucky they missed some good chances at the end.  But overall, I'll certainly take the win."

Do Not Underestimate the Heart of a Champion

United Bounce Back With Quality Win

Marriottsville, MD -- After an ugly, lackluster 2-1 loss on Saturday to the hands of the lucky, but tough OLNY Tigers, ODFC United rebounded and beat a higher quality TSC Thunder Flash side 2-0.  It was an impressive victory--and an important one.

Coach Sheehan said, "Saturday was tough.  The officiating was embarrassing and the field conditions were frustrating.  However, despite the fact that we are a much better team, we did not play smart enough to earn it.  But Sunday, we were rejuvenated and on fire!"

Sunday's game featured an opponent that turned out to be much better all around than the Tigers.  But in many ways, that leads to a better United performance.

"We always play better against a team that IS ACTUALLY PLAYING SOCCER and not just packing the box and kick-balling.  It showed Sunday when both teams had great chances due to aggressiveness and creativity."

"It also helped that the official was allowing it and not stopping play whenever he wanted attention."

The Thunder Flash got behind the United defense a few times early but Greta, Stacy, and Elena were able to recover in time.  Zoe made some smart plays and the score remained 0-0 until Kara found Eco for a near-post finish and the half ended 1-0.

In the second half, each team challenged the opponent's goal but it was United who cashed in when Katyna made an overhead kick in which she and Britt turned into a cross to the right.  The ball came back to the left across goal and Candice found the only open part of the net.

"Candice has a knack for that.  She puts games away.  We have tremendous confidence in her.  We've almost come to expect it."

United held on to win 2-0 and are currently within reach of a trophy finish.

7 UP!

United Pour It On

Waldorf, MD -- ODFC United clinically and physically disposed of the FWAS Ladyhawks 7-0 on Saturday.  Despite the poor field conditions, the girls in blue controlled possession and displayed good technique.

"Ball movement was good and improved as the game went on.  They had some dangerous players but we wore them down," said Coach Sheehan.

Candice got United on the board first with a patented back post finish off a great cross.  The second goal was the play of the day as Greta made a run out of the back for Britt to drop.  Greta took a touch to prepare the ball, then ripped a 25 yard laser over the tall keeper's reach.  The half ended when LC pushed through the middle on her own and scored after the keeper bobbled the ball.

In the second half, the midfield of Candice, Rachael, Jackie, and Kate fed chance after chance for the strikers.  Britt finished two and LC added another.  Zoe also scored within a minute of moving to striker off great work by Britt and Katyna.

Elena was a very solid center back in the first half and finished the shut-out as keeper in the second half.  Shelly, Greta, Zoe, and Candice made plays in the back to keep the shutout as well.

8 Hearts Beat as 1

"There are 8 of you!"

South Riding, VA -- Sometimes all you can do is just play on and see what happens.

Those that saw what happened will never forget it.

With just 8 players versus 11, plus 5 subs on the opponent bench, United earned a draw, 2-2, and thus, a point in the standings against HSC Freedom 87.  The Freedom were middle of the pack in division 2 in their last WAGS campaign so this was no slouch of an opponent.

The odds were certainly stacked against the girls in blue and the Freedom fielded an overwhelming 11 for the whole 90 minutes.  But it was United who scored first when Greta fought in the box and Candice finished it off.

The Freedom needed a beautiful free kick to tie it.  A few minutes later they benefited from a completely blown offside call when the forward got an awkward shot off that was going out until it bounced unexpectedly back toward the United goal.  Stacy and Jess pinned it against the post but the referee called it a goal.

And that was it for Freedom scoring.  As a matter of fact, they only had two or three good chances after that.  This is mainly due to great hustle from our midfield of Candice, Rachael, and Greta.  Plus, Zoe, Stacy, and Shelly were as tough as nails and as sharp as a tack with their back line play.

Stacy tied it up in the second half with a great individual effort.  Most teams would protect the goal and play conservatively but that is not United and it certainly isn't Coach Sheehan.

"We had a lot of confidence and may have had more chances to score than them," said Coach Sheehan.  I needed everyone of our girls to fight and be smart.  Not only did they do that, but their touch was very good.  We were very smart tactically, but most of all, we just wanted it more.  For example, take Katyna, she made something out of every ball that crossed midfield as the only forward against 4 or 5 defenders.  Rachael made up for two midfielders and a withdrawn forward.  Candice and Greta played wing back, mid, and forward.  Finally Stacy, Shelly, and a repositioned Zoe continued to push up and hold the line brilliantly."

"The result really didn't matter after watching such a display of guts and fortitude.  That was an UNFORGETTABLE performance by 8 amazing young women.  They play so hard for each other.  But hey, we got a point.  Wow!  And you know, if we have a different United 8 next time, I think we get the same effort and desire.  That's how special United is."

United Battle to the End

Virginia Beach, VA -- In United's third trip to the Old Dominion Cup, the goal was first place.  In 2004, they made a semifinal appearance, which was a big step.  In 2005, they made it to the final of the silver division and got out-wrestled by the bullies from Ohio.  But now, in the gold division, United found themselves in several tight matches.  Their spirit and respect for one another took them through to the final.  But an early goal against and fatigue was a little too much to overcome in a 1-0 defeat.  Here is a recap.

Game 1:  Finishing is an Art

United opened up the tournament on Saturday morning against Nike Rush Swoosh.  Our ball movement seemed to be sleeping in as the game was scoreless through 15 minutes.  But United earned a corner and LC put it on the near post as Kara (brilliantly!) boxed out the keeper and Kasey alertly punched it in the net.  Then, the floodgates opened up with Katyna's textbook finishing on two of the goals and LC and Jessica each adding one.

The 5-0 halftime score became 6-0 just two minutes into the half when Eco volleyed in a rebound from Kara's cross goal shot.  The Swoosh goalkeeper was very good, stopping us on several chances throughout the game but LC managed to score another on a deep shot.  Finally, Zoe, was released from the cage, and dribbled past the keeper for the final goal in an 8-0 romp.  Elena tended goal in the second half with the forwards providing back line cover.  United comically held the shutout.

Game 2:  One of Our Best

With the semifinal birth clinched already, United took on the Nike Rush Fireballs.  The Fireballs beat the Swoosh 10-1 and were a very skilled and disciplined team.  It appeared that United had to play a great game to win...and they did.

The first half began with both teams attacking hard but also feeling each other out for weaknesses.  The Fireballs did not play more than one or two strikers, making it hard to break them down, however, we closed down their dangerous target player fairly well.  United broke through first when Eco made a darting run onto a ball played in front of the sweeper.  The ball trickled in front of LC, who fortunately trailed Eco, and she drove it into the roof of the net from six yards out.

The Fireballs retaliated with dangerous shots and good attacks down the left side.  They equalised in the second half when #15 finished a loose ball in a collision with Zoe.  We didn't know it at the time, but this play left the goalkeeper with a fractured jaw.  But this did not take the brave goalkeeper and perennial leader out of the game.  She, as usual, gave us everything she had with a handful of game-saving stops.

With a tie game and five minutes to go, United's desire to get the job done paid off.  A Nike handball gave United a direct kick from 30 yards out.  Rachael, who got stronger and stronger as the tournament went on, alertly got the play set up and took a quick shot.  The ball came off the post as United attackers crashed the goal.  Eco stuck with it and scored the goal that gave United the lead.  In the waning minutes, the defense marked well and Zoe made a technically perfect tip across her body on the back post and the game was over.  United had won 2-1.

Coach Sheehan said, "A classic.  That team was good.  I respected them a ton.  It wasn't the prettiest game we ever played, but the grit and resolve we had made it a quality win.  I couldn't be prouder."

The Semifinal:  We Can Come Back Too!

The OBX Storm faced ODFC United in semifinal game #1 on Sunday morning.  The Storm had a tough preliminary round but managed to qualify for the knockout phase.  United was beaten to several 50/50 balls and you could see that the Storm was ready for an 80 minute fight.  After United missed two breakaway chances, OBX knocked one in and went into halftime with a deserved 1-0 lead.

Coach Sheehan reflected on the first half.  "We were not hustling like we can and the ball movement was well below our standard.  Perhaps we were taking them too lightly.  If we wanted to play in the afternoon final, we'd better step it up now."

But Coach Sheehan did not need to tell his team this.  They immediately got together and discussed what they had to do.  The captains and other team leaders voiced it, and the team nodded and prepared to deliver.

"All I had to say was the line-up for the second half.  As a coach, you want to lead and say the right things, but if they can do it on their own, then the coach has done his job.  I was completely confident that we would get it done."

Kasey, scorer of several clutch United goals, came through with the game-tying goal part way through the second half.  The game clincher would come when Greta put a ball through to LC down the right flank.  She used her deceptive speed and instincts to get to the ball first and push to goal.  For the second time, LC got tripped from behind on the break, the ball came out to Eco who drove it inside the far post.

"The ball from Greta was perfectly timed.  The run and first touch from LC was courageous.  And the shot from Eco was unsaveable.  The roar from our fans and parents was loud and satisfying.  It was a great feeling and a great comeback."

The Final:  Two Great Teams.  One First Place Trophy.

The other semifinal ended 2-1 with CUSC Impact getting two late goals to defeat Nike Rush Fireballs.  The Impact looked very strong and won their preliminary games easily.  Both teams went into the final a little sore and fatigued.

Both teams traded decent chances on goal until the Impact got in the box after a throw-in and muscled through a battle-worn Zoe for a goal.  United went into halftime, down one, and increasingly tired.  However, morale was high and the evenly played game could easily swing in our favor.

Throughout the entire game, Elena led a tight defense that kept the Impact out of the goal area.  Rallying with Elena were Greta and Shelly, who played tough.  Stacy was suffering from a twisted ankle but gutted it out in the midfield while Jackie took her place in the back line.  Kate, as always, provided hustle in both a supporting and covering manner.  She nearly snuck in and scored in the first half.

"Elena played her best game this fall.  Jackie filled in marvelously for Stacy and provided much needed quality defending.  But Shelly was most outstanding.  She tends to step up in a physical and courageous manner in big United finals."

United knocked on the door through the last 20 minutes of the match, while Zoe made a few saves on full-out dives.  United switched to a 3-3-4 with 10 minutes to go and Elena pushed up into a 2-4-4 with two minutes to go but United couldn't find the net and the game was over.  Impact win 1-0.

"We wanted it badly and you could see that in our play.  However, you could tell we were a tired team as our vision became very narrow.  Too many long balls played straight forward just made us more tired and predictable.  But I can't really fault us because the opponent was smart in inviting that pass, but then recovering quickly with fast defenders.  They played a lot like us.  I thought we'd get one but it wasn't meant to be."

"Overall, it was a great weekend of soccer.  We were just as deserving of our first Old Dominion Cup championship as the Impact, but adversity makes us stronger.  It was a pleasure to see that we could do just as well, if not better, in the premier division."

United Do Everything, But Win

Somehow, Magic 3: United 2

Seneca, MD -- SSA Magic scored a heart-breaking goal with just three minutes left to sink United in the last game of the fall season.  It was a gut-wrenching defeat after United won nearly every ball, took far more shots, and pushed into the Magic half all game long.

After a last minute field switch to a field that could not possibly be approved by WAGS, United got on the board first when Kara followed up on a defensive mistake and smacked it past the keeper.  The Magic got two quick counter-attack goals and took a 2-1 lead.  Right before the half, Eco launched a throw-in into the box and Rachael courageously knocked it in.

The second half consisted of the Magic just packing the box and barely breathing amidst the onslaught of United balls forward.  But the Magic keeper played well and United could not break through.  As time passed, it became harder and more frustrating because of the lack of space.  United were not tactical enough to put the game away.  With three minutes to go, a Magic player got open about 25 yards out and she hit a prayer that fell under the bar as Zoe dove with all her might.  United still mustered a couple more chances in the waning seconds but the game ended as another shocker.

Coach Sheehan said, "Soccer can be a cruel sport.  This season has certainly had its frustrating moments, not because we didn't play hard, but because we missed out on opportunities.  The field conditions we endured this season were generally awful and that can be a leveler for teams with inferior skill and movement.  Despite the fact that we were a co-leader in goals scored, just a few more goals here and there could have given us a deserved trophy."

"There are positive things to look at.  Kate came onto the team full time and fit in very well.  Her hustle was invaluable.  Kara scored in 4 of our last 5 games, providing a spark in several tight matches.  Greta gave us her best season in all aspects of her position.  And as a team, we picked up our play in games when we had injuries and sickness."

Next up for United is the VA Beach tournament.  It is a chance to regain the mastery the team showed in Williamsburg.

United Test the Nets at Little River

Reds blowout SYC Comets 5-1 in revenge game

South Riding, VA -- ODFC United found themselves in a tie for the division lead in goals scored this weekend after trouncing the Comets 5-1.  This was revenge for a tournament championship game loss last summer.

Coach Sheehan - "Last week, we let chances to win slip away but not today.  I'm pleased that we figured out how to use our home field as an advantage.  I'm happy that we got a go-ahead goal soon after they tied it up.  Mostly, I'm happy that we kept our heads and once again, completely frustrated the opposing players and the coach with good soccer and cool heads."

United got on the board in the 10th minute when Rachael found Kasey on a great cross to the weak side.  Kasey was all by herself and volleyed past the frozen, unprotected keeper.  The Comets got the goal right back on a scrappy play in the United box.  But in the 30th minute, United fought back to tie when LC punched in a rebound off Kara's strong left-footer.  A few minutes later, Rachael caught an unaware Comet defense with a sneaky free kick in the corner.  Greta helped to seal the game in the first half when she snuck up field on the dribble and then dished to Kara for a sly finish and a three goal advantage.

In the second half, United wore down the Comets by beating them to all the second balls.  They took several shots and got a fifth goal mid way through the half from Kara

The United defense was sound as usual with Shelly and Ecu turning in particularly solid performances.

"Not only do we share the division lead in goals scored, but we  also nearly lead in goal differential.  Our goal next week is to beat the team in first and become the division's highest scoring team."

Gimme Five!

ODFC United Score Early and Often

Crofton, MD -- United pumped in five goals from five different players and some unlikely heroes in goal preserved the shut out in a 5-0 win over the CRFT Strikers.  The Strikers were fast, but not quick enough to keep up with United passing and mobility.  Kara, Stacy, Shelly, Katyna, and Jessica each scored for the girls in blue.

In the second half, Elena put on the keeper shirt and had to make a great save before surrendering the position to KaraKara, not to be out-done by Elena, made four saves, two on breakaways.

Coach Sheehan said, "I'm proud of the girls' effort today.  Our opponent was not as strong as we've seen lately and we could have played down to their level.  But we moved the ball very well and looked to go forward to put the game away.  Our finishing was very relaxed in the first half and therefore, more efficient.  Our roster was really depleted today, but we stepped up and got the job done."

Lucky Strikes

DCST Strikers Top United 2-1

Germantown, MD -- The DCST Strikers survived an onslaught from ODFC United and won 2-1 at home.  After a handful of near goals from through balls and runs from United, it was the Strikers who found a wide open (and seemingly offside) forward for a goal.  Kara scored the lone United goal on a pass from Rachael to tie it.  But the Strikers found a way to get a game-winning goal in the second half.

"The Strikers are a good team.  They are well-coached and did a decent job defensively, " said Coach Sheehan.  "They tried to build attacks and knew they needed to get the ball to number 9 to score.  She probably scores more goals for them regularly but Greta played a great game against her."

Coach Sheehan was disappointed but said there was no need to hit the panic button.

"I think we all wish we could have a play or two back individually but it's been obvious that we have been the better team in every game.  We need to be consistently poised and aggressive.  If we play 90 minutes of United soccer in each game the rest of the way, there will be more goals and United will have a hand in who wins this thing."

United Fall to Fairfax Lazers

Girls in Blue Dominate Play, But Lose 1-0

South Riding, VA -- Frustrations got the better of ODFC United and a hungry FPYC team stole three points on Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 match.  The lone goal came from a bouncy ball in the box that United defenders could not find in time to clear out.  The ball fell fortuitously in front of the yellow shirted forward for the score.

"We got frustrated.  I am definately included in that," said Coach Sheehan.  "We got a little more focused in the second half and played harder, but didn't make the plays consistently at each position in order to win.  We'll be hungry for three points next week."

United Shut Out Lazers 2-0

Rachael finds Candice for Second Half Game-Ender

Sterling, VA -- ODFC United earned a big three points on Saturday morning with a shutout of the old rival Sterling Lazers.  The Lazers played hard and nearly got the first goal.  But LC got United on the board in the tenth minute and late in the second half, Rachael displayed terrific vision when she found Candice on the edge of the box for a great finish.  After the insurance goal, the game was decided.

Coach Sheehan said, "I thought that the back line and Zoe played pretty well throughout the game.  Our midfield and forward play got a lot smarter and more effective as the game went on.  We increased our chances when Kara and Katyna checked back for support and LC made some very nice diagonal passes.  Laura gave us some good crossing opportunities and Candice's goal was an impressive play.  Sterling played sound defense.  They were tough to break down and hard to score on.  But having three dangerous forwards can cause confusion for the opponent."

"Jackie had another great game.  She played really tough in the midfield and found red feet constantly."

Battle of the United

ODFC makes afternoon blue for ABGC

South Riding, VA -- ODFC United, battling sickness in many spots on the field, overcame adversity and took care of business early against ABGC United.  Eco, Kara, and Jess scored first half goals and then held on to win 3-1.  Zoe played brilliantly in goal in very difficult conditions and Shelly turned in a particularly good game for the back line.

"We had a less than stellar warm-up, but came out swinging right away," said Coach Sheehan.  "Eco's header goal and Kara's gutsy right-footed finish gave us control immediately.  Our spirits picked up and Jess gave us more insurance with a nice goal of her own from the defensive midfield.  The score might indicate that we dropped off a bit in the second half, and that's partially true, but actually, we had three or four seemingly sure goals from Kasey, Shelly, and others.  Their keeper made world class saves.  Otherwise, we could have put up at least 6 on them."

An Exciting Comeback

United erase two goal deficit in last 3 minutes to gain point

South Riding, VA -- ODFC United held it together through a tough challenge from the OLNY Tigers and earned a 2-2 draw.  LC buried a rebound from an 18-yard shot from Stacy and then a minute later, Candice sent a rocket across the goal that was deflected in by the Tiger defender.

Defensively, United held a good high line and earned several offside calls, frustrating the Tigers.  Zoe played well in goal and combined with Elena to communicate to the players in front.

Coach Sheehan said, "Overall, I was proud of our attitude and confidence that we could come back after going down a goal, and then two.  In my opinion, Kasey and Jackie deserve a lot of credit.  They were both talking positively and hustling to their last breath.  Stacy and Candice do as well.  They had poised, solid command of the ball.  We were fortunate to avoid the loss, but at the same time, we were the better team.  I wish we could have challenged their keeper even more but she was good and deserved a lot of praise.  We usually had people in the box for rebounds.  The Tiger defense did enough to keep us out of the net for 87 minutes."

The Little Team that Could

United, once again, pull tournament upset

Williamsburg, VA -- United stumbled a bit early this weekend, but regained form quickly to take home the Busch Gardens Soccer Classic Tournament Championship Sunday.  It was United's second title in the last three tournaments and fourth tournament championship overall.

A very happy Coach Sheehan said, "It was a brilliant team effort.  We expected to win and that is what happened.  We beat a premier division southeastern VA team in the semifinal with ease and then clearly outplayed the Div. 3 WAGS SYA Lightning.  That makes one division one team victim and four division three team victims in the last two years. Though, it really has gotten to a point where the WAGS ranking of our opponent is irrelevant.  This team has our winning tactics completely figured out and I would welcome the challenge of ANYONE."

Game one had United pitted against TCU Lightning.  Kara put United ahead, only to be tied up before halftime.  Rachael gave United the lead on an impressive turn and volley from 18 yards, but the Lightning again equalized.  The game nearly became a win for the Lightning but Laura, playing courageously in goal, stopped a breakaway that ensued when an offside call was ignored by the center ref.  The game ended in a 2-2 draw.

So United went into the afternoon game with a good performance needed in order to clinch a playoff.  The opponent, Portsmouth Chaos, actually got on the board first, with an opportunistic goal off a corner kick.  Rachael got United back in the game with a goal before the break.  In the second half, Rachael and Kara hooked up for two sensational goals.  LC and Eco then put the game way out of reach with goals of their own.  The Chaos were able to sneak in a second half goal but the match ended in a 5-2 United win.

"I was particularly impressed with Kara's goal in this game.  Rachael broke into the box against two defenders and cut it back away from the keeper across goal.  Kara, who slightly over ran the ball, reached back to knock it in.  It was a great set up and an equally entertaining finish.  This was eye-popping skill."

Sunday's early morning semifinal was expected to be a tough match.  But a hard working consistent back line and midfield gave our front line confidence to run roughshod at the opponent, CUSC Hurricane, goal.  Katyna, who was particularly determined, got United up about 10 minutes into the game.  A little bit later, Shelly cut off a dangerous break into the area.  Then, the old floodgates opened up with Eco, Rachael, and LC scoring first half goals.  In the second period, United just wore the Hurricane down and Kara added a fifth tally.  The match ended in a 5-0 clean sheet.

So the final had the SYA Lightning, who breezed through their preliminary round, up against United.  United was in their head right off the bat and Eco confirmed their fears by clinically finishing a breakaway from a Rachael through ball.  The Lightning were able to tie it up on a nice hustle play by their left center forward.

The hot conditions would make it difficult for anyone to play at their highest level.  But United, the true embodiment of teamwork, showed huge heart.  Outside mids Jackie, Candice, and Kate got back on defense and bodied up against very physical marks.  Our midfield linking of passes from the back was quite good.  Candice was particularly masterful with the ball, while Kate and Jackie won several 50/50's.

In the central midfield, Jessica and Rachael were courageous and near perfect.  They are what every coach wants in a center mid combination.  Both fought through injuries and exhaustion and both left lasting impressions on anyone at the tournament.  Jackie showed her versatility by dropping into the defensive mid spot and United benefited greatly from her leadership, sound positional play, and guts as well.

In the second half, with the score tied, United pushed the issue with several chances at goal.  With about 15 minutes left, Eco launched one over the drawn out keeper.  The ball hit the net just under the bar and United had the lead.  They would not relinquish it as Laura pulled off a handful of saves and Elena, Stacy, Shelly, and Greta protected the final third.  United had won 2-1.

"Eco's goal was one of the smartest plays of the day.  She saw the keeper in no man's land and made her pay.  I also want to add how smart and savvy our back line was.  They never panic.  Elena helped keep good shape and did her thing.  Stacy stepped into passing lanes.  Shelly relieved pressure with long balls to the wings.  But Greta, in particular, stepped it up in all facets.  In tandem with Elena, for most of the game, they shut down a very dangerous striker (#24) from the Lightning."

"This team has come a long way.  We will continue to play team soccer and impress.  We expect to win...and it shows."

United Take Home More Hardware

Girls in Red Hold Silver at Tournament's End

Harrisburg, PA -- Two minutes.  Just two minutes separated first from second place in the Hampden Girls Invitational Tournament.  Harrisburg Area United scored two goals in the first two minutes of the second half to defeat a resilient VISTA United team 3-1.

"I'm not sure what happened," said Coach Sheehan.  "There was no single player to blame for the goals.  We just let our guard down and whap!  But United fought back and the game was not put away until the final whistle."

The sudden strikes from Harrisburg made the score 3-0, but United fought back with a goal from LC.  Later, Britt just missed a second goal when her shot pinged the crossbar.

This was essentially a final game considering that we were the two teams with the most points going into the final matches.  This was United's 6th straight final appearance and 8th tournament trophy in the last 9 attempts.  The only recent tournament in which they did not finish at least second was the semifinal exit in the 2004 Old Dominion Cup.

Saturday's first match put United up against the "never say die" Loudoun Wildwings.  The score was 9-0 with goals from Katyna (2), LC (2), Rachael, Stacy, Zoe, Jackie, and KaseyKate would have given United an even ten, had her 30-yard drive not hit the bar.  Zoe and Elena combined in goal for the shutout.

In the afternoon, Candice, LC, and Katyna scored first half goals to put away the WAGS division 2 Sterling Legend.  Sterling, which featured several Dominion varsity players and at least one County varsity player, got a goal in the second half to make it a little interesting but United regrouped and played hard enough to secure the win.

"We should've had at least two more goals had the referee allowed play to continue on Amanda's breakaways.  He blew the whistle way to early.  Amanda's appearance for United on Saturday was quite welcomed, considering we were missing several regulars.  She played well."

United also benefited greatly from the guest play of Britt.  "She combined so well with Jackie and Rachael in the central midfield.  She works very hard and made some great give-and-go's."

Zoe and Elena kept the back line steady as always and Greta and Stacy had solid performances.  "I asked a lot of the defense this weekend and they came though as always."

"Elena, Zoe, and Kasey were terrific captains.  They are fun, but know when to put their game faces on.  They are true competitors and outstanding soccer players."

This tournament concluded the 2005-2006 season.  It was certainly one to remember.

A GOLDEN GOAL!

United Upset Host Eagles in Overtime to Win the Stafford St. Pat's Day Tournament

Stafford, VA -- United shocked the WAGS world on Sunday afternoon, beating the Stafford Eagles, a division 1 team, 2-1 behind two Eco goals and a tremendously disciplined defensive effort.

Coach Sheehan had this to say afterward -- "We had to step up and play tough.  I've not seen us play up to that level with such physicality to match our disciplined tactics.  We took the Eagles head on.  I'm especially proud of how we hung together after going down a goal early."

The Eagles scored first on a cross that was nicely tapped in by the weak side mid.  But a few minutes later, United, playing into the wind, took control and played low-pressure defense in order to get space behind the Eagle back line.  Eco and Katyna converged on a through ball that the sweeper got to first.  The two of them fought it away from her together and Eco knocked it home.

Then United started to believe and the Eagles started to bicker.  Zoe established physical dominance of our defending third and the backs played flawless defense.  Elena showed a lot of toughness as well.  It wouldn't be surprising if she came home with a concussion.

The midfielders, led by a boisterous field general in Rachael, played inspired, hustling soccer.  The midfield never get the credit they deserve but every one of them came up big.

In the second half, the Eagles did everything they could to hold the tie to regulation.  In the second golden goal period, LC found a streaking Eco who redirected the pass by the onrushing keeper for the championship.

"What a great run!  Taking a division 1 team to overtime is very satisfying but to win it, even without pk's is a moment we will never forget.  We just beat a team that finished undefeated in a very formidable bracket."

In the last preliminary game on Sunday, United dropped in a half dozen goals to easily handle the Waldorf Knights 6-0.  LC-fest continued with a hat-trick and Eco, Britt, and Jessica added single goals.

Saturday -- United Post Two Clean Sheet Victories

Stafford, VA -- In their first full squad outing since the Old Dominion Cup Final, United calmly caged the Wild Katz 2-0 with goals from Erin (Ecu) and Candice.

The Reds played with a unfamiliar central midfield but got similar production.  Jackie, LC, and Britt were savvy hustlers that played smart balls and stayed open.  Elena settled in with her fellow defenders to help Zoe give the offense confidence to go forward.  The first goal (Ecu) resulted from brilliant combination play down the right wing.  The second was in typical United fashion as LC crossed to Candice on the back door for a tap in.

"We played a beautiful first half and then fizzled a bit in the second.  Sometimes that happens when the opponent does not provide much of a fight.  But their sweeper did a nice job." said Coach Sheehan.

In the second game of the day, United faced a formidable FASA Redhots team that won their first game of the day 5-1.  The blue-clad United bunch played passionate soccer and jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead, thanks to a "red hot" LC.

"We were terrific in game 2.  We had a great warm-up and came out smoking.  The midfield was excellent and we got good finishing.  Rachael and Jackie took command of the midfield and Britt came in and split two backs with a great counter-attacking through ball that LC buried for the back-breaking goal."

Eco turned it on against the Redhots and gave United goals off low crosses.  One found LC on the back post for a goal and the other was knocked in by a retreating fullback.

The score ended 3-0.  The Redhots got a few chances late but United held them off for the shutout.

Make Room in the Trophy Case!

United Completes the Championship Chase

Columbia, MD -- The sun was shining as a late autumn breeze graced Howard Community College Stadium's flawless field on Sunday.  It was a dream scenario with SAC United Classics and the visiting VISTA United competing for a championship.  The score ended 0-0 but shutting out the Classics was all United needed to secure their first division title.

"We had a great run and deserved first place," said a very proud Coach Sheehan.  "Sure we would have loved to have the win today and got revenge but we played an outstanding game on both ends.  I was so glad that I was not in the position of the opponent coaches in the second half, struggling for some way to just get a sniff of the ball."

Coach Sheehan also commented on the WAGS schedule.  "Both teams today had very tough schedules.  Ours had most of our greatest competition at the end.  So we got a lead in the standings early and had to keep the pressure on to stay up front.  It should not be underestimated that it is very difficult to be the rabbit that everyone is chasing.  Our girls were mentally tough."

United played its best first half in a month but were still challenged by a formidable opponent that was playing with the wind.  The Classics first got off a shot that Laura dove to save.  She held on impressively.  Later, the Classics striker got in behind Elena and barely beat Laura with a shot that everyone thought was a sure goal.  But Elena did not give up on it and cleared it off the goal line.  "I have never been more convinced that we were scored on, but I should not be surprised with that play.  It is not the first time for that kid."

Later in the second half, after a few chances by United, including a free kick off the Pink Floyd play where Rachael hit the crossbar, the Classics made a great corner kick.  They redirected it inside the far post.  But a disciplined defender like we have will certainly be in position.  Stacy, who was marvelous, jumped up to head it away.  This was another seemingly sure goal turned away.

"Laura was terrific in goal and I'm not surprised one bit.  And I was very happy that the defense rallied behind her to make those great plays in support."

After a positive, instructional talk at halftime, United came out with a vengeance.  The second half was a clinic as United worked the ball all over the field and took chances at goal.  United probably had about 10 decent chances at goal.

"The whole team stepped it up in the second half and really played to win but we were able to get so many chances this time because of the play of Kara.  She was flat out dangerous, using speed and aggressiveness to draw attention to herself on the flank.  I thought she really put it on herself to get involved and to make something happen.  She took a shot when she was feeling it, but then found teammates for shots that were better angles."

Coach Sheehan was also very pleased with the flank players keeping wide and disciplined.  Sometimes outside mids get overlooked but their efforts allow central player more room to work.  Plus, a good cross is one of the most dangerous plays in soccer.

United could not have gotten to this point without the explosion in offense.  Newcomer Katyna gave us six league goals to lead the team.  Kasey found her scoring touch with four goals, three of those being clutch.  Eco scored three goals this season with two of those occuring in critical wins over good opponents.  United got at least one goal from 10 different players.

But it seems only fitting that United's first championship clinching game would be a result of stout defense.  Greta, another newcomer, has been a great addition with her toughness and speed.

Here are some final thoughts from Coach Sheehan -- "Freddie Mercury said it best with We are the Champions.  What a great feeling this is.  We accomplished our goal and will enjoy this one for a while.  But after that, we will dig in and prepare for what's to come...and if we stay United and compete, look out!"

United Keep Believin'

Katyna, Kara, and Kasey hook up for late equaliser to earn a tough point in Olney

Olney, MD -- It was the tale of two halves between the Olney Tigers and VISTA United as they battled to a 1-1 draw on Sunday morning.  The draw officially sets up a showdown next week for the championship.

"I'm really impressed, yet not surprised, that we played as well as we did in the second half," said Coach Sheehan.  "In the first period, we were as flat as we've ever been and the Tigers came hard.  Ok, let's be honest, we were awful.  Though, I thought the Tigers played us very tough and despite the fact that they may have been offside on their goal, they deserved a lead.  But when I saw us come out so well in the second half, I was completely confident that the Tiger scoring was over.  The Tiger assistant coach was insisting that they would get another breakaway goal because they were faster, but c'mon, can anyone threaten Elena's speed?  The answer is no.  And, no team gets two breakaway goals in one game on Zoe."

The Tigers nearly scored in the game's first minute but Zoe got enough of the shot to deflect it wide.  Olney really played physically and aggressively.  After being embarrassed by United's ball movement in the first match-up, the Tigers decided to battle for any 50/50 ball they could.  It was an effective strategy.  United gave up the goal when #17 got behind the hard-working defense and drove a ball high into the net.

After some reflection at halftime, United decided that enough was enough and they showed why everyone is gunning for them.  The Tigers didn't string two passes together and were forced to kick it out.  But United even made that difficult with LC, Laura, Jackie, and Ecu in particular, providing outstanding intelligence and hustle.

Jackie and Shelly are both coming off illnesses and did not play a lot of minutes today but were very effective in the midfield.  Their contributions were key to United's second half success.

"It was obvious that once we started passing and making the ball do the work, that things would open up.  In addition to the team's great second half hustle, Candice's ability to create space for herself and her teammates made the Tigers chase in their own half.  You don't see that in the scorebook, but it makes a huge difference."

A foul outside the box, about 20 minutes in, gave United their first good chance to score.  Rachael's bending right-footer over the wall was taken well but bent just a little too much and the keeper handled it.

United took some outstanding corners today and almost got a goal with about 6 minutes left when Jess's flick in front of the keeper just got over the bar.  "What a play.  That's why she has been designated the pest on corners.  It is very tough to skim that ball just right with your back to goal."

Finally, with 2 minutes to go, United cashed in.  Katyna made a diagonal run into space and turned to cross.  The ball floated in front of the net and Kara headed it down.  The keeper was able to push it away to the back post but Kasey was there with her quick reflexes to tap it in.

"That was the exact play we talked about at halftime.  These girls are smart and listen well.  I was very proud of that goal in a gutsy comeback."

In conclusion, Coach Sheehan had this to say:  "The Tigers deserve credit for their effort, but so do we for our resilience.  It would have been nice to win today and possibly clinched first place with a game to go.  But we are looking forward to the rematch with SAC next Sunday and it is for all the marbles.  It's just like when you go out in the back yard and pretend you are scoring the game-winning goal for the championship.  Well, here it is."

United Suffer First Loss

SAC finds way to shutout United

Clifton, VA -- Undefeated seasons are so rare, which makes them so special.  United's dream of that season came to an end on Sunday in a 2-0 defeat against SAC United Classics.  SAC got two first half goals and played prevent the rest of the way to preserve the three points in the standings.  United still leads by two points going into the last two weeks.

Coach Sheehan said, "We picked it up in the second half, but we never got into a passing rhythm.  It was very frustrating to see us lose our discipline.  SAC played well enough and got the breaks."

United can still wrap up the division hands down with victories in their last two.  "We are not going to scoreboard watch.  We are going to win it outright.  Despite the fact that we were undisciplined offensively, we still only lost because of bad breaks."

The officiating was very inconsistent with bad calls going both ways.  The worse calls coming inside the box, both in favor of the visitor.  But United showed their class by shaking hands with the refs after the game and understanding that if we would have played better, then it would not be an issue.

"We have to get up, dust ourselves off, and get back on the horse.  One game does not ruin the magnificent season we've had.  The championship is still in sight.  We just have to go out there and take it!"

United Tame Tigers 3-2

United Class Takes Over

Clifton, VA -- In what could have been a "trap" game for United against a formidable opponent, the Reds built a lead with quality finishing and held on to beat OLNY 3-2.

"The Tigers were aggressive and beat us to some balls," said Coach Sheehan.  "But when we settled in and passed around them, the cream rose to the top.  We frustrated them all day and if it wasn't for a few fluky goals on their part, it's a blowout."

United took the lead in the first half when a corner kick got across the mouth of the goal and several United attackers crashed the lanes.  LC volleyed it in on the back post.

"LC was scary good today.  She could have easily been the player of the game too.  Though scoring that goal was a team effort, she did well to put it away."

The Tigers tied it with a header just under the bar.  But United answered on the last play of the first half when Rachael dished off to Kasey who hit a pretty bender off the far post from 20 yards.

"We didn't hesistate to shoot.  When we got the chances, we took them for the most part."

In the first five minutes of the second half, Katyna was able to finish a ball while the keeper was in no man's land.  "The keeper fell asleep on the play and Katyna made her pay."

OLNY was able to get back in the game on a very bizarre floating toe ball but the Tigers really posed no threat since they could not build an attack.

"Overall, I'm proud of the team for not coming out flat after Homecoming.  Plus, we didn't play kick ball with the opponent.  That is a great sign."

United Continue Run to a Championship

Reds Post Another Shutout

Clifton, VA -- The VYSA Strikers came into Sunday morning's match up with United with something to prove, having lost several close games in their last few outings.  They played hard and challenged the division front runners.  But in the end, United's skill, athleticism, and persistence came through and a 2-0 United victory was the result.

Coach Sheehan had this to say afterward, "We got it done.  At times, we looked very smooth and superior.  But then we also had some bad first touches and indecisive play.  When we settled down, we played better.  We were definitely trying to score more, but the Strikers made us work hard for it."

Katyna was the scorer for United today with a pair of goals, one in each half off her left foot.  "Katyna has a knack for getting us on the board first.  Those goals can really change the game and give us an upper hand."

On the first goal, Zoe got around her marking back and put a dangerous ball across the goal mouth.  Eco and Katyna were both there but good awareness allowed a proper finish in the empty net.  The second goal was a result of United's possession.  The Strikers were getting tired of chasing and couldn't beat Katyna to the loose ball inside the box.  She saw a chance for a one time shot and she was right.

"The good play we had up front in the first half was very important.  LC, Zoe, Eco, Katyna, and Kara really put the Strikers on their heels."

"Our goalkeeping, defending, and striker play was good.  But again, when faced with a team that packs in their penalty area, it comes down to midfield play.  Will the midfield hold possession and take shots?  Well, we did, including a great build up in the first half that ended with a blast off the cross bar from Rachael.  Taking those shots (when the opportunity is there) will not only give us goals directly, but it will free up space for the forwards."

Laura, Candice, Jackie, and Kasey were constantly available  for passes and all took good scoring chances, whether it was a shot or a cross.  "We have several very solid flank midfielders.  All understand their role.  Plus we have an intimidating central midfield.  Rachael's skills and aggressiveness are an opposing coach's nightmare.  But also, we have Jess playing behind her.  Jess's tremendous skill and ability to cover ground and squash counterattacks, gives the teammates in front of her the freedom to attack the goal with reckless abandon."

It was also another frustrating day for opposing forwards as United's back line of Elena, Stacy, Greta, and Ecu racked up several offside calls.

The league will take a break over the Columbus Day weekend.  After that, United will hit the home stretch with 4 tough matches against the teams on their heels.  It should be an exciting end to what appears to be a championship run.

United Dominate Again

Reds prove to be too much for Blaze

Boyds, MD -- On a gorgeous field at the Soccerplex, United showed that they are one of the class teams in the area with a 3-1 defeat of the Potomac Blaze.  Katyna, Kasey, and Eco were the goal scorers.

"It was a great day.  The field was perfect.  The officials were flawless.  And my team was outstanding."  Coach Sheehan exclaimed.  "We beat them to every ball in the first half and finally hit the net with Katyna's sneaky volley before the whistle.  The shots were coming from all directions and players.  It took a little while, but we got our scoring rhythm."

The Blaze were completely frustrated with United's tactics and nearly gave up.  But they came back to play hard in the second half.  They got an equalizer in the 60th minute, but United came back with a goal from Kasey's persistence.  "She deserved the game-winner today."

With about 15 minutes to play, Zoe made a finger tip save on the near post.  Also, Greta hustled back to save a bouncing ball near the goal line.  When United cleared it out, Laura won it and under pressure, played a ball ahead.  Kara ran it down and won it off the defender's foot.  Eco recognized that she had to get in and help.  She did and broke away inside the box.  The perfect counterattack ended with Eco's left footed finish on the far post.

"That is how you counter.  We took a dire situation in our box and turned it into a goal for us through four players working quickly together.  And, the finish was on the money!"

"We've put teams away early and we've had last second wins.  In some games, we've been a little off our game, but still won.  And know we've been challenged late by a good team, but got it done with great soccer in the second half.  We are ready for any challenge, physically and mentally."

United sit alone in first place...right where they belong.

Take Another Step

United slowly dispose of the Avanti

Clifton, VA -- Kara scored the first United hat trick in the team's history to give United a 3-0 lead and Eco and Candice added single tallies to give United a 5-0 win and an impressive 3-0-0 record to start the season.

"We have scored 34 goals this season (including tournaments) so far and our WAGS goal total of last year has already been surpassed," said Coach Sheehan.  "These ladies just get it.  We had great run of play last year but didn't add the finishing touch.  The confidence is there and the results have been good.  By no means were we in tip-top shape today but it was one of those uncompetitve games where you just want to get the win and prepare for tomorrow's showdown with the Blaze."

United improved in the second half and broke out of their first half slumber.  Four of the team's five goals came here.  However, the Avanti keeper deserves a lot of credit for stopping plenty of shots.

Laura and Stacy played very well today.  Both put some beautifully flighted balls off the posts.

Back in Black

All Black Breakaways Break Down Warriors

Clifton, VA -- In a clash of apparent division powers, VISTA United got yet another player to find the back of the net and an own goal to beat the DSC Warriors 2-1.  The victory keeps United in a first place tie with the Potomac Blaze.

The Warriors played a similar style of defense but did not close off the through ball lanes so United attacked the space and wore down their backs.  United got several close opportunities throughout the game but didn't take the lead until Eco got on the end of a through pass and pushed it past the tall keeper for the opening goal.  The goal followed a full layout save by Zoe.  Both plays brought United to life.

Shortly after, Elena, who led a watertight defense, popped a ball over top, looking for a darting striker.  The DSC defense was in disarray and the ball was accidentally headed backward by the DSC back.  The ball floated over the aggressive keeper and Kara followed it into the net.

Coach Sheehan said, "I hate to see an own goal but our pressure caused it.  We certainly deserved that insurance goal."

The own goal was huge for United as the Warriors scored a goal of their own deep into a long injury period.  "I noticed that the girls were upset about losing the shutout so I told them to let it go.  But if you look at it another way, it shows we are striving for the best."

"The forwards played well.  Katyna, Kara, Eco, and LC got on the end of some breakaways or found each other for second chance shots.  At the Dulles Tournament, Katyna and LC got clutch goals.  Over Labor Day, it was Kara who found the net in a 1-0 win over the Wild Katz to put us in the final.  This week it was Eco who broke through.  It is so pleasing for me to have so many scoring threats that work so well together.  And at the same time, they are not looking for the other to step up, they are all going for it."

"I'm also very proud of how we stayed focused and didn't get frustrated with not scoring earlier.  Stay the course, believe in each other, and good things happen.  Man, I love coaching this team."

Coach Sheehan also added, "Of course, this can't be done without our solid play in the midfield and the back.  Our goalkeeping gives us so much confidence as well."

"It was nice to see the Warriors play like us as far as pushing up in the back.  However, they got tired out from not possessing.  That's the difference between us and them...and that's why we got the win."

A Perfect Game

United are Flawless in WAGS Opener

Fredericksburg, VA -- The Stafford Wild Katz and VISTA United have played four times in the last three tournaments with each game going down to the wire.  That was not the case on Sunday as United tamed the Katz with a 6-0 beat down.  Coach Sheehan said, "I told the girls I didn't want to see them again.  It was their last chance to get us and if we spread the field and play our game, we would win."

United did exactly that, taking advantage of a regulation sized field and quality officials.  The United forwards were very disciplined, keeping wide and making good crosses.  "I'm extremely pleased with everyone at every position.  No one had an off-game but props have to go to the wing forwards.  Their discipline opened up space for centrally located players to score at will."

United scored first in the eighth minute with Stacy playing a ball through one of the many attacking lanes created by the forwards and mids.  Katyna got on the end of it and turned it to goal, beating a defender and driving it far post past the keeper.  Katyna added a second goal when Kara's shot was blocked by the keeper and both forwards followed it up.  Katyna got to it first and bulged the back of the net.  Jackie rounded out the first half scoring with a long range shot just under the bar.

"We played a great first half.  We used the whole field and were aggressive to goal when given the chance.  Aside from the girls mentioned above, LC, Eco, Laura, and Candice nearly scored themselves, despite playing unselfishly, passing in for teammates or staying wide to give the center striker space to work.  We had one very special build up where the ball was played ahead to a checking EcoRachael told her to hold the ball as she wrapped around behind.  Eco played it off, then went diagonal where Rachael fed it up to her.  Eco turned to goal and fired a shot that the keeper barely saved.  We nearly punched in the rebound.  That's soccer."

Much of this free-wheeling offense was created by Jess whose unyielding hustle allowed the other mids and forwards to concentrate more on attacking the goal.

Another player that helps relieve defensive responsibility is Elena.  United have so much confidence in her on stopping breakaways and making proper distribution.  You just can't beat her.

In the second half, after Zoe's second breakaway save, United came out firing again, and did not allow the Wild Katz a sniff of the ball.  Good support play by wing backs and wing mids, Stacy, Shelly, Greta, Jackie, and Erin Cu. opened up even more space.

Katyna got on the end of a through ball and got tripped in the box.  Shelly did her thing and United opened up a 4-0 lead.  Several minutes later, Kasey drove in a fifth goal and Rachael hit a sweet 30 yarder to round out the scoring.  Kara would have finished the seventh with a penalty kick had time not run out on another foul in the box.

"Before the game, I challenged the central midfield to take three shots a half to give the forwards more room to work.  I think we got three goals from them!  We were hitting on all cylinders today and deserved the result."

United Prove Deserving of Patriot Cup

But single, strange goal in the final costs United championship

03-04 September 2005

Fairfax, VA -- Since gaining that sweet championship taste during the past two tournaments, VISTA United's second place finish was a little sour after allowing no goals in preliminary play.  A bizarre goal off a corner kick gave the SYC Comets a tournament victory.

"I saw Zoe go up and make the intial save, but then a group of white jerseys crashed in front of her and then I saw Zoe and the ball hit the side of the net."  Coach Sheehan had previously stated how fairly he thought the game was officiated and put faith in the referee that her vantage point was better than his.  "Zoe was so tough this weekend (as usual).  I don't know if they even got a foot on the ball they scored.  It's a shame considering how hard we fought and how much better soccer we played.  Though I'm not surprised that if they were to score at all, it would have been through direct force.  They used their athleticism and hustle to frustrate us.  This made us lose some of our discipline like making the easy pass with a purpose or holding our width offensively.  I hate to say that it worked, but they are holding the first place trophies."

United's preliminary match-ups began with the Loudoun Wildwings.  LC and Kasey each scored twice and Katyna's persistence on a ball up the middle resulted in an effective finish as well to round out the 5-0 victory.  LC's second goal resulted from heads up play.  She saw the keeper favoring the back post, so she looked up and passed the ball easily into the near side.  Kasey's second goal was also noteworthy as she took the ball down the left flank and placed it nicely over the keeper's head with no hesitation.  Plus, Jackie and Laura were typically solid, showing good passing sense and aggressiveness, mostly on the right side.

Game 2 put United up against the Comets.  This match was not a pretty one as the Comets baited United into a kick ball game.  The score ended 0-0 but was highlighted by Jess, who did not let a single pass or dribbler get through the defensive midfield.

The last preliminary game featured yet another match-up versus the Stafford Wild Katz.  The Wild Katz came into the game with the same number of points as United so the winner would go onto the final and the loser would go home.  After a few breakthroughs of the back four, United switched into a sweeper formation with Elena putting a clamp on anyone with speed.  This, along with a great save across her body by Zoe, stopped anything the Wild Katz could dream of building.  United got numerous chances at goal and then finally connected when Katyna and Kara pressured the Stafford backs into coughing it up for Kara to knock in.  "Kara has improved each day this preseason.  She scored once, but made a lot of runs and some beautiful moves into space."

Later in the second half, Rachael, playing in her typically courageous fashion, slammed one off the crossbar from 20 yards and the versatile Greta got a shot on goal from a great run down the left.  At the very end of the game, Katyna beat two defenders and ripped a shot that the keeper pushed left.  The very opportunistic Candice, finished it on the back post for an apparent goal.  But unfortunately, it was called back for offside.  The 1-0 win put United in the final as the #1 seed.

Coach Sheehan wrapped it up -- "We played well despite lousy field conditions, though I know we are capable of more.  We definitely played hard all weekend, except for 20 minutes of the final.  Many of our missed chances at goals could be blamed on a bumpy penalty area.  You might say both teams had to contend with that, and I would agree, but no one was inside the other team's penalty area more than us."

"On a positive note, this weekend saw the return of Erin and Shelly.  They played well and picked up the team's spirits."

United, however, played its last game with Elizabeth.  "What an outstanding overall soccer player and teammate, she will be missed and we all wish her the best of luck."

United open up the regular season in WAGS on Sunday morning versus the Wild Katz.
