Coming in first, their race was won with grace and precision in a record 50.1 s (HT). Well done. Thanks must be given to the entire team who made this achievement possible.

45th National  Inter Schools Cross Country Championships 2004
Date: 3 March Wed  Venue:  Bukit Turf Club

Girls Team : 2nd

The NJC Girls Cross Country team performed superbly well during the race under very difficult weather conditions.  Their splendid performance helped the team clinched the second position.  Four girls won individual medals by coming in within the top 20 positions.  Lim Zirui won an individual medal in the Boys category by coming in 12th position.  Most worthy mention must go to Koh Sihui with her excellent performance in clinching the 2nd position in the individual category despite having a bad fall 1 week ago.  The Team will not have done well without the sacrifices made by every individual member of the team.  The Boys team with the help from other CCAs (Hockey, Soccer/Tennis) also ran a very good race. Please drop by this site later this week again to see the photos taken during the event.

An Encounter with Sir Roger Bannister

Carol Teo, our Ex-Captain (2000/2001) is currently studying Mathematics  in Exeter College, Oxford University.  Carol won a bronze for the Girls 100 m and a bronze for the 4 x 100 m relay during the National Inter-Schools Championship in 2001.  She had an encounter with Sir Roger Bannister recently. An alumni of  Exeter College, Sir Roger Bannister was the first man to run the mile in less than 4 minutes.  He did it 50 years ago on 6 May 1954 in a time of 3.59.4.  The breaking of the 4 minute mile was a historic event then as it was thought that to run 4 laps at a 60 s pace was humanly impossible.  With the help of his friends, Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway , Sir Roger Bannister broke the barrier on that eventful day.  To this day, the record has been broken many times and the time has been reduced by about 16 seconds.  The current record is set by Hicham El Guerrouj from Morocco in a time of  3:43.13 in 1999.
