| Plumorchard Gap Shelter to
Muskrat Creek Shelter - 78.4 miles from Springer |
A rough, rainy, foggy day.
The mountains were very steep and slippery from the heavy rains.
My pack felt very heavy from dampness. My new Go-lite pack
holds most of my equipment and weighed in at Amicolola Falls at 27
lbs; however on rainy days it must weigh 30 lbs. which falls on the
top of my shoulders. There are no lifter straps to relieve the
weight. My recently purchased breast strap does help. |
| Crossed into
North Carolina. Not much
change in the type of trees. Mostly white pine, hemlocks,
oaks, a few maples, and a few spring flowers such as blood root,
yellow and purple violets, columbine and Galax. Too cold on
mountain tops yet for many wild flowers to be in bloom. After
crossing North Carolina I started to notice that paper birches were
noticeable in the woods and the amount of pines began to diminish. |
| Met "Tapeworm" (because he
eats everything in site) Iowa, 'G.R.U.M.P.', and two young people,
'Sam I Am' and 'Oragomi' from Colorado. I was glad to be in
the shelter for the night, even though we were packed in like
sardines. Thos dang boards don't get any softer, but it sure
beats being soaking wet and in the thunder and lightening storm. |
