7:15am leaving Tumbling Waters Shelter.
I don't why they put these shelters at the bottom of the hill so
that the first thing that you have to in the morning is climb a hill
straight up. That exactly what this one is, stone and rocks.
I think I reached the top. It was about a 1000 foot ascent. |
This is a pretty time of morning to be
going through the woods. The trail is fine gravel covered,
smooth, also leaf covered. The woods is very quiet this
morning. The sun is just starting to peek through the trees.
I can take my time going through here and not have to worry about
stumbling over rocks. Getting ready to go straight up again.
Some huge boulders in the trail now. |
Part of the last tow miles we've had a flat
terrain to walk on, rocky, but very easy to hike through. Park
like setting! Saw some Indian Pike Stems coming up and Fly
Poison. We're starting down hill now and are in a real rocky
area, but still easy to hike through. Going through a large
damp pine forest. |
Crossed PA 233 back into the woods and
rocky area. Well Rocky Mountain is just that, The trail
has been fairly easy hiking around the rocks, but off the right
there was nothing but huge rock piles, right across top of the ridge
line, ranging from 75 to 100 feet tall . Large boulders, piled
on top of each other. Then we ahs to come up to the top of the
ridge line and we're hiking down now more toward US Rt. 30. I
have about 3 miles to go. |
Going past the Rocky Mountain Shelter area.
We had a snack at the top of the hill sitting on the rocks.
Hiking through the woods has been beautiful as far as hiking through
most of it has been clear and you can see off into the distance,
however, its been uneventful as far as views. Your just locked
into this green tunnel that have no views from the mountain tops. |
The trail took us down to the side of
the big rock boulders, walking down hill for about a 1/4 of a mile
and the it turns and goes straight up to come up over the rocks on
the ridge line. The trail went straight on top of the rocks
and we had boulder jump form one rock to another. Going now
down an incline, probably for the last mile before we hit RT. 30.
Got down to 30 or very close to it and we saw a cooler that was put
there by trail angels and when we got there it was empty. Then
when we got closer to 30, right before stepping out on to the road,
there was another cooler there and it was full of juices. So
we had a couple packets of juice and I used Tom's cell phone and I
Right Spot motel in Fayetteville and got us shuttled into the motel.
I had to come in and pick up a drop box. Plans are to shuttle
back out and possibility of slack packing to Pine Furnace Sate Park.
It's been a long rough day, I'll talk to you tomorrow. |
