June 01, 2005
It's 12:45pm and were back on the AT heading north toward Bailey Gap Shelter.  I enjoyed my visit with Phyllis and I want to thank everyone for all the cards, their concern and their support while I'm on the AT.  Also I heard that you enjoyed your camp week-end and I Dave and Wanda Pack to thank for doing the hiking schedule for me.
For the next 4 miles we'll be on Ridge Top and there will be a lot of boulders we'll have to cross over, but there is one place out here farther north where we can have one foot in WV and one foot in VA.  The wind is really blowing up over the ridge line turning the leaves of the trees back.  I have a feeling we going to have a rain storm blow in today.  The air is cool and there is a little sun that peeks through every now and then.
We are looking at huge big boulders and on top of this one smaller boulder there's a bright red columbine in bloom.  It's no very tall, but it's beautiful.  Going through a hard wood forest, normal trees for this area.  This morning coming up through the trail, we saw a good bit of evidence on the ground where the bear had been through and one very fresh pile of scat from a larger bear.  Evidently they had been digging around for grubs and stuff this morning. Then we got to this very steep ascent and there were huge big boulders on either side of the trail.  Rock outcroppings, some of then looked like they were squares.  Then the terrain opened up to a very level area and easy hiking.
Coming up to the Allegany cut off.  This is where Bob and Ruth and I came on to the AT when we hike it a couple years ago.  We coming down on the VA side of the mountain now and the woods is breaking out into laurel, rhododendron and pines.  We running into some more pink and orange honeysuckle that is just starting to bloom

We're going down a rocky descent beside a creek that on both sides of the trail there's nothing but huge rock boulders that rolled off the side of the mountains.  This must be a moist damp area, lot of moss growing on the rocks and in the creek the boulders are all moss covered and very dark green.  This little creek is going rapidly down hill with numerous water falls.
Note: I'm now listening to a radio playing at the shelter along with the chat of its occupants.  Now they're singing....hope they keep their day time jobs! (smile) Kathy
The noise you just heard was the kids at Pine Swamp Shelter, just having a good time, ages between 20 and 25, but they do come up with some unusual things.
