Stover Creek Shelter to
Sassafras Mt. - Raining and cold, 45 degrees when we started out for
cooper Gap. We hiked in the clouds the whole day. The
rain never did let up. Stopped by Hawk Mt. Shelter to eat
lunch. I heard 19 people stayed there, either tenting or in
the shelter. The shelter was full when Jay and I arrived, so
we soon bid the young kids good-bye. Left there for Cooper
Gap. |
We decided to stay on the
mountain top since it was reported that Cooper Gap was flooded from
the recent rain; it was still raining, cold, and we were in the
clouds. High winds sounded like freight trains. My tarp
stayed up well. |
It was a cold supper and off
to bed a 7:00pm I couldn't sleep form the roaring winds, so I
tossed and turned and poor Simon shook in his coat. Finally,
since the wind didn't let up, I put in my ear plugs, pulled down my
toboggan, and tightened my sleeping bag hat. That seemed to
help, and I did get some rest. |
Woke up at 6:30am as the
sun peaked over the mountain into my tarp. What a welcome
sight! Jay I decided to hike off the mountain before we had
our morning breakfast sitting on a huge rock where the warm sun was
shinning. |
