Sandgate Toastmasters

What happened last Meeting

13th November, 2001

We spent a moment thinking of those who had died or lost loved ones in the tragic plane crash in New York today.

Then Toastmaster Penne endeavoured to keep the meeting on a lighter note by reading funny kid's quotes throughout the meeting.

Caroline had ingeniously made new timing lights, using red, yellow and green cellophane and a torch. This was in response to advice we had recieved from an electrician regarding the safety regulations of electrical timing lights.

Word of the Day
Last week the Melbourne Cup (Australia's famous horse race) was won by a horse named Ethereal, so Marlene chose the word "ethereal" as word of the day and explained that the it came from the greek word "ether" meaning "the heaven".

"Ethereal" means light, airy, heavenly - of unearthly delicacy of substance or appearance. John was the only one who managed to use the word during the evening.

Round Robin
Toastmasters each spoke for 20 seconds on Kellie's topic of recycling. Some recycling ideas were mulching, remodelling clothing and freezing water in empty soft drink bottles to use when exporting live eels! (Only a trawlers wife would think of that one.)

Table Topics
It was good to see the new members tackling Table Topics for the first time. They were asked before the meeting if they chose to participate, since they were also presenting their Icebreaker speech.
Marlene had chosen six topics that accentuated positive thinking:

1. What was one of the best gifts you have received?

2. What is one of the bravest things you have done?

3. Tell about a time when you succeeded at something.

4. Who was the best teacher you’ve had?

5. What is the nicest compliment anyone has paid you?

6. What are some positive points about a close friend?

Book Review
Narda reviewed the book "The Japanese Miracle."

Raffle
The raffle prize of a photo album and calendar was presented by Del, who also provided homemade anzac biscuits and dateloaf for supper.

Speeches

New members Chrystal and Lenore each introduced herself  in her "Icebreaker" first speech.

"Island Beginnings"   Chrystal spoke about growing up on an Island. (Which most of us had never heard of and can't remember the name of.)

"Me, I Guess"  Lenore's speech was also interesting - about growing up in a small country town.

Educational

"When I am the Chairman"  Kellie helped to take the terror out of  the role of chairman by explaining the proceedure in a simple manner.
