Sandgate Toastmasters

What happened last Meeting

23rd October, 2001

Halloween Theme

Narda and Kim had decorated the room  in black and orange with glowing candles and grinning jack-o-lanterns. Nearly everyone was dressed either in Halloween costume or in black.

Trish gave everyone a copy of the orign of Halloween.

There were four guests, Noveana, Leona, Mike and Wally, who showed no fear of the numerous ghosts, draculas and witches.

New members Crystal and Doug were inducted into the club.

Kelly who had won the Novice Speech competition some time ago, was presented with the perpetual trophy. The trophy had been missing before.

Toastmaster Caroline kept the meeting lighthearted by offering participants a Trick or Treat ( a sweet or a joke) after they completed their role. Most opted for a treat after hearing a few of the jokes.

Hobby Horse
Liz told how she hates it when tradesmen won't tell her what day or what time they are coming and she has to stay home all day waiting for them.

Round Robin
Del presented a very challengiong topic, "White is black." The answers were varied.

Table Topics
David presented this segment a little differently, by getting six Toastmasters to leave the room, then come in one at a time to answer the same question, "Are fleas friendly?"  They all managed to scratch up a good answer.

Speeches

"A Norman Rockwell Life"   Doug  took a novel approach for his Icebreaker Speech and described some "snapshots in time" from his life.

"The Stuff of Nightmares" Kim used plenty of vocal variety to tell about her reactions to horror stories she has read and movies she has seen.

"The Salesman" Another Vocal Variety speech. Garth took on a very convincing role as a pushy salesman.

"Read Out Loud" from the Advanced Manual, "Specialty Speeches." Marlene read an amusing story about a coffin.
