Sandgate Toastmasters

What happened last Meeting

27th November, 2001

It was a dark and stormy night... which probably contributed to the lower attendance than usual. However, 12 Toastmasters  braved the elements and took part in an enjoyable, somewhat informal meeting.

Toastmaster John had researched historical events that had occurred on November 27 and was able to supply interesting information throughout the evening.

Word Master
Christal introduced the word "Troglodyte" - meaning cave dweller or person who lives in seclusion - or (colloquial) a primitive, barbaric unintelligent insensitive person.

Round Robin
Del asked  Toastmasters to speak for  30 seconds each on any topic, beginning with the last word that the person before them had uttered. Several spoke about troglodytes.

Table Topics
Most of Andrew's topics were long and complicate and even more difficult to summarize than they were to answer, but they were the source of much amusement.

1. How did the water get to the plains? Marlene told how food and water is loaded onto planes before take-off.

2. Something about a koala, a starfish, and a whale in a canoe. Christal made a valiant attempt and told how the koala, starfish and whale came into being.

3. Tell about getting lost deep in Dragonwood. Trish talked about the Harry Potter movie.

4. A list of bizarre medical symptoms... Garth was asked to diagnose the complaint , which he did with great humour.

5. A list of cooking ingredients... John talked about making zucchini burgers.

6. Something about an apparition of an old lady in a motel room.  Liz told about discovering that the old lady was her own reflection in the mirror.

Educational
"Keeping the Commitment" As well as presenting an inspiring  speech, David demonstrated commitment by coming to the meeting to deliver his educational in spite of a painful slipped disc.

Speeches
"An Unforgettable Era"   A Read Out Loud assignment from "The Entertaining Speaker" manual. Penne read from the dramatic and humorous war diary written by her father in 1945.

"Commonsense"  (Work with Words). Garth displayed humour as well as a proficient use of words as he spoke about some of the ridiculous warnings on products.

Grammarian Lenore reported that four Toastmasters had managed to use the word Troglodyte and suggested that everyone try to use it during the coming week. (!)
