22nd January 02
Australia Day Theme
The evening began with a spirited if somewhat off key chorus of our
National Anthem.
Advance Australia Fair
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"
Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the sea
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Word
of the Day
Cristal introduced the expression, "Chick
Magnet," which appeared to require no definition. The male members of the
club were referred to as "Chick Magnets" throughout the evening.
Round
Robin
Liz
asked "What is the most Australian thing you have done?"
Camping was
mentioned, cooking over an open fire, making damper, making billy tea and
swinging the billy round, barbecues, swatting mossies, wearing Australian
flag undies when overseas, taking and distributing toy kangaroos and koalas
overseas, singing the national anthem at the Grand Final, being naturalised,
walking into an unmarked glass door and not suing anyone, rearing
two "chick magnets" and larrikinism. (Ask David about that one!)
Table
Topics
Penne chose topics with an Australian theme.
1. "Australians
let us all rejoice." What do you rejoice about?
Liz spoke
about the dangers in other countries, where one can even choke on a pretzel
and said she rejoices that pretzels are not popular in Australia.
2. How would
you describe Australia to your Chinese friend in a Chat Room?
Monica said
she would tell her friend about the bush and the ocean.
3. "We've
golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea" ....as Pauline
Hansen would say, "Please explain!"
David talked about the "Red Centre" of Australia and how the mirages
make one think they can see the ocean.
4. The Opal
is Australia's national gemstone... tell about your adventure in Coober
Pedy.
Doug told
about the flat dry dusty gemfields and the Australian dream of getting
rich quick.
5. The Golden
Wattle is Australia's national flower...what flower would you choose as
the national flower?
Trish said
she knows "squiggly squat" about flowers, but her favourite flower is the
Gardenia. She suggested it could be imported as the national flower and
"chick magnets" would find it would improve romance.
6. Why wouldn't
you change the Australian flag?
Cristal said
she wouldn't change it because it meant a lot to soldiers who fought under
it and it would cost taxpayers money to change it.
Speeches
1. "Your Back is my Business." Caroline spoke about her
job as a Physiotherapist and how she teaches people to look after their
backs. It was her 7th speech. (Apply your skills.)
2. "Stress and Depression" In this, her second speech,
Leonie talked about being aware of other's needs. She used a quote by Benjamin
Franklin, "If we don't hang together, we'll all hang separately."
