What happened last Meeting

9th April 2002

Historic Events Theme

Lenore and Bing made a special effort by dressing as convicts in keeping with the Historical theme of the evening.

Wordmaster

Doug introduced the word, "shibboleth," which he explained is an old Hebrew word for an ear of corn or a stream in flood. In an Old Testament story, Jepthah had used the word "shibboleth" to tell the Ephraimites from the Gileadites. Ephraimites could not pronounce the "ph" sound correctly and revealed their true identity when they tried to say the word. Nowadays, the word "shibboleth"  is used to describe a secret test word, or a mispronounciation that reveals a persons origns.

Quote

Lenore gave us the origns of several well known sayings, eg.  "From the horse's mouth" comes from the practice of telling a horse's age by the condition of it's teeth. It was considered bad manners to check the age af a horse that was a gift, hence "to look a gift horse in the mouth."
"In the limelight" comes from the old system of burning gas or lime to produce lighting. "Curtains " and "Top Billing" also come from theatrical terms.
A "pig in a poke" comes from the practice of buying a pig concealed in a bag, not knowing if it was a real pig or a stray cat. This was revealed when the buyer got home and "let the cat out of the bag." He also might have discovered he had "been sold a pup."

Round Robin

Marlene asked, "Out of all the Toastmasters Speeches you have heard, which one do you remember the most?" This caused a lot of reminiscing. The most memorable speeches were the ones that used humour, vivid word pictures, or touched the emotions.
