10th September 2002

Theme: Spring - New Growth

Everyone brought a potted plant or plant cuttings, which were auctioned at the close of the meeting.

Round Robin
In keeping with the theme of new growth, Trish asked, "If you had the power to change the world, what would you change?" Some answers were, "more closeness & tolerance," "more listening & less talking," "no war" "teach children to love and not hate,"  "reverse the events of
9/11 last year"  "Equal opportunity."  One Toastmaster said she would like to change her actions when she picked her neighbour's flowers to bring to the meeting, not knowing that it was a special plant. Her neighbour, who is a fellow Toastmaster, said she would like to take back the words she said when her flowers were picked!

Table Topics
Liz kept to the "Spring" theme and asked,

1. "How do Forget-me-nots remember?" Caroline said that other flowers with trumpets hear everything and pass the information on to them.

2. "Is a miniature Hibiscus actually a Lowbiscus?" John said he had never described his miniature Hisbiscus as "Low." It is simply a "Small" Hibiscus.

3. "Can a Lily-of-the-valley grow on a hill?" Narda said, Yes, it is just a name. It will grow anywhere in the shade.

4. " Why was the Petunia lonely in the onion patch?" Marlene said it was planted in the middle of the onions, which kept all its friends away, so it cried and watered the onions and they had a bumper crop.

 Speeches

1.  "I'm a Foodaholic."Caroline presented an inspiring account of her battle with the bulge. It was the final speech in the Communication and Leadership Manual and she was given a standing ovation.

2. "My Hero." John told an interesting story about Governor Arthur Phillip.

3. "Continual Development" Nev spoke about continually learning and self-improvement.

Auction

Instead of a raffle, there was a brisk plant auction at the close of the meeting. This was a lot of fun.
