Sandgate Toastmasters

What happened last Meeting

9th October, 2001

New member Lenore was inducted into the club. There were three guests, Chrystal and Doug, who had both been to previous meetings and Wally, who came for the first time.

Maurie and John were congratulated on their success at the Area Conference. Maurie came first in the International Speech competition and second in the Humorous speech Competition. John came second in the Evaluation Competition.

Word of the Day
Liz introduced the word "piffle," meaning rubbish, twaddle, silly talk. It was an easy word to use during the evening and caused some amusement.

Round Robin
"Why did you decide to join Toastmasters and what have you got out of it?" was the question posed by Kim. Most of our members said that they joined to learn speaking skills and to improve confidence. Someone said, because they thought it was a drinking club (just kidding) and another member said she joined to get out of the washing up once a fortnight. Many mentioned the confidence and skills they had gained.

Table Topics
Joyce had prepared some challenging topics. (I can't remember the exact wording)

1. How do you get the cork out of a bottle without a corkscrew?

2. Imagine you are a herder and milk maid on a goat farm.

3. How do you get the mince into a sausage skin without an instrument?

4. How do you change a tyre without a jack?

5. What comes to your mind when you think of a blue moon?

6. How did the ship get into the bottle?

Speeches

"Life, Comedy and Tragedy"  In her fourth speech from the Communication and Leadership manual, Kim successfully used gestures to describe some of the embarrassing and hilarious moments in her life.

"Strangers I Have Met"  was the topic of Narda's sixth speech. She used good vocal variety to describe her fear when encountering snakes.

Joke Master
Garth spun a long involved tale that no one will ever be able to repeat, but it involved a card playing cattle dog from Oodnadatta who played poker at the exhibition in a tent opposite the flying pig. When he got a good hand, he wagged his tail, but no one laughed at that point, so he went back to Oodnadatta where something happened to him and he was taken to the local vet who tried to save him, but he died in spite of the efforts of a labrador and a cat.....

Ask Garth.
