Thesis Suggestions

Here are a few possible theses which you may choose to write your papers on. These are not requirements, merely examples.

Jack O'Neill:

1. Jack O'Neill: Protagonist or Antagonist. Determine whether Jack is the solution or the source of the situations that SG-1 finds themselves in. How does his character further their resolution in either direction?

2. Jack O'Neill: Historical Background. Using only canon elements (meaning on screen), what is Jack's background?

3. Jack O'Neill as the archetypal hero. A comparative study of the character of Jack O'Neill with other archetypal hero's such as Beowulf, Odysseus, William Wallace, Hercules or any other you can think of.

Daniel Jackson:

1. How has Daniel's attitude towards the military changed over time?

2. What 'burdens' does Daniel have/need to release?

3. Daniel Jackson and Jack O'Neill are very different characters. What is your take on their friendship and what it is based on?

4. How has the early loss of his parents affected Daniel?

5. General Hammond describes Daniel's position in the team as 'vital' - what do you think Daniel brings to SG-1 that would be missing without him?

6. How has Daniel changed over the seasons?

7. How would each member of SG-1 describe Daniel?

8. Daniel has suffered a lot of loss over the seasons. How has he coped with these losses and how has this changed him?

9. How has Daniel been influenced by Jack? (or any other character)

Sam Carter:

1. 'Super Sam' the genius. Samantha Carter manages to have indepth knowledge in a number of scientific fields, despite (for all we know) only holding a degree in theoretical astrophysics. Is it realistic for her to have this knowledge, or has she become the stereotypical know-it-all scientist?

2. Samantha Carter and the role of women in SciFi. How does Sam compare to other notable female SciFi characters? In what ways does she conform or not conform to the typical role women have in the genre?

3. Samantha Carter as a sister and daughter. Sam probably has the most developed family on the show. What is her relationship with the rest of her family?

Teal'c:

1. Teal'c as the Shol'va: What were Teal'c's reasons for betraying Apophis in "Children of the Gods"? How does he deal with his reputation among other Jaffa and the Gou'ald in general?

2. 'Teal'c's development during the years: How has his personality changed? His sense of humor? How has his role on SG-1 changed?

3. Teal'c and his relationship with SG-1: How does he relate to each of them? How does he deal with events such as Sha're's death )"Forever in a Day") and his brainwashing ("Enemies"/Threshold")?

4. How does Teal'c's need to free the Jaffa from oppression play into his actions in episodes like "Crossroads", "Exodus", and "Warrior"?

Jonas Quinn:

1. Who is Jonas Quinn? What do we know about him? What can we extrapolate from what we have seen so far as to his personality, his benefit to the team, his benefit to the SGC, his future relationships with each character?

2. Jonas Quinn's position on Kelonan was to oversee the scientific research from an eithical perspective. Will he be able to do the same for the SGC and are his ethics the same as ours?

3. Since General Hammond wanted someone on SG-1 who would offer a different outlook to the military one, how will he best accomplish this? Has he started?

4. Were Jonas Quinn's reactions in "Meridian" reasonable and justified?

George Hammond:

1. George Hammond's priorities - His family or the Air Force?

2. George Hammond and Jack (or Daniel, Sam, Teal'c, Jonas, or Fraiser) -- what kind of relationship do they have?

3. Describe his command style - perhaps comparing it to other SG characters or other SciFi characters in leadership roles.

4. His feelings regarding the chain of command (both above and below him).

5. His feelings regarding civilian/political parties.

Janet Fraiser:

1. What kind of relationship does she have with Jack (or Daniel, Sam, Teal'c, Jonas, or Hammond), Cassie, or other characters she has interacted with?

2. The decisions Fraiser makes in the infirmary: how much can she distance her own personal thoughts from the ones as CMO? How does she reconcile her acts in the infirmary?

Character Relationships:

Note: The Character Relationships Department is for theses which focus on multiple characters in an equal fashion. If you would like to focus on one main character's interactions with other main characters, concentrate on that character's department. However, if you would like to examine a variety of character interactions, look no further.

1. SG-1 as a family: Some people believe that SG-1 functions not only as a military unit, but as a family unit. Is this true, and if so, who fulfills which family roles? If not, why is the believe that SG-1 is a 'close-knit family' unsubstantiated in canon?

2. SG-1 as a team: Which duties do Jack, Sam, Daniel (and/or Jonas Quinn) and Teal'c fulfill? What were their original duties in the early seasons, and what are they now? Has there been a change in the roles each person plays, and if so, why?

3. How has the relationship of Sam and Jack (Jack and Daniel, Sam and Teal'c, Hammond and Fraiser, or any other pair) evolved over the show's history? Where did these two characters start, and where are they now? What are some defining moments in their relationship? What do other people think of their relationship?

4. SG-1 as explorers: The members of SG-1 have seen many strange things over the years. How do each of them deal with the incredible and unexplained? What are their inital reactions, and who - if anybody - do they turn to for answers?
