From The Universe of the Four Gods

Those are the words that begin it all. Miaka Yuuki, an ordinary, cheerful, fifteen-year-old girl, follows a strange vision of a bird of fire into the 'locked' Important Documents Reference Room of the National Library. She is followed by her best friend Yui Hongo, who laughs at Miaka's story of the fiery image. As they turn to leave the room, a book falls from the shelf and hits the floor, giving both girls quite a start. They pick it up and begin to read the ancient Chinese book Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho, also known as the Four Gods' Sky and Earth or The Universe of the Four Gods.

The two friends exchange puzzled looks, not understanding the passage they have read. Then, a flash of red light bursts from the book and envelops the girls. When they awaken, the friends find themselves on a stretch of open land. The two have no idea where they are, or where to go next. Before they can make any kind of decision, however, Miaka and Yui are attacked by a group of men determined to kidnap them and sell them to the highest bidder. Yui is grabbed first, and Miaka tries desperately to fight off the men and save her friend. Though she does some decent head-bashing, the young girl soon finds herself overpowered. Things look hopeless.

Then a young man appears. With a few dazzling, powerful martial arts moves, he disposes of the gang. All the while, a red character, the character for "Ogre," glows from the center of his forehead. The mark surprises Miaka, but she's even more startled when their savior turns around and demands to be paid for his services! When he finds out the two don't have any money, he hurries away. Yui chases after him while Miaka continues digging through her pockets for change.

During Miaka's money hunt, Yui is suddenly consumed in the red light once more and vanishes, leaving the other girl alone on the empty field. Yui finds herself back in the library, in the very room she and her friend had vanished from moments before. She searches for Miaka, but cannot find her anywhere. The Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho still rests open on the floor. Kneeling beside it, Yui can hardly believe her eyes as she sees column after column of characters appearing upon its pages. She reads of two girls being attacked by a group of men and then being saved by a young man with a red character on his forehead. The book is telling the events she just experienced! Yui realizes with shock that she and Miaka were transported into the world of the book. But why didn't Miaka return as well? Helpless, the young girl can only sit by idly and read the adventures of her friend on the pages of the ancient text.
