Fushigi Yuugi Profiles

Miaka Yuuki

Miaka is the main character of Fushigi Yuugi, a completely average school girl from Japan (unless you include her amazingly-above-average appetite). She has a bright, cheerful personality, and is always trying to make situations better. Though she is quite the scatterbrained idiot, she truly means well... even when she screws up, it's with the best intentions.   She was sucked into "The Universe of Four Gods" along with her best friend from the real world Yui as the two study for their entrance exams to Jonan High School.  Yui is sent back to the real world and Miaka stays to become Suzaku No Miko, or Priestess of Suzaku.  Her job is to gather all seven of the Suzaku Seishi in order to summon the god Suzaku and bring peace to the world.   She also hopes that Suzaku can grant her wish to stay together with Tamahome forever.  When Yui makes her return to the book world and becomes an enemy, Miaka refuses to let her go, no matter how terrible things become.  Friendship and love are all that matter to Miaka. Well, those and food. She never seems to get enough to eat. ^_^

Tamahome

His non-Seishi name is So Kichifu.  Tamahome is ruled by the constellation Cancer and has the mark of the Ogre (or Demon... whichever) on his forehead.  He saves Miaka and Yui when they first arrive in the book world from a group of men who sell women for... umm... I'm guessing sex slaves.   After Yui vanishes, Miaka is convinced that Tamahome kidnapped her and tries to track him down.  After they team up, the two head to the emperor's palace where Miaka becomes Suzaku No Miko and it is told that Tamahome is one of the seven Seishi who must guard her.  Tamahome and Miaka begin to fall in love, though Tama-chan doesn't understand his feelings.  The only things he's ever loved before are his family and money.  He eventually declares his undying love and devotion to Miaka (and then proceeds to do it over... and over... and over...), and the two basically spend the rest of the series splitting up and then getting back together again.

  Hotohori

Hotohori is ruled by the constellation Hydra and has the mark of the Star on his neck. Also known as Saihitei, he is the Emperor of Konan.  He thinks he's the most beautiful man alive (which is probably pretty close to true), but is not self-centered at all.  True, he often wanders around declaring himself as beautiful... but it isn't all he thinks about! ^_^ The Emperor is a kind, caring man who wants the best for his country and all people. Nuriko is in love with him (or so he says), but Hotohori is completely in love with Miaka.  When he was a child, he was always alone.  The legend of the Suzaku no Miko coming from another world gave him hope that someday he would find someone to care for and love.  When Miaka shows up, well... it's his childhood dream come true.  Unfortunately, she doesn't return his feelings, which leads to a tense scene or two between Tamahome and Hotohori.  He fights incredibly well with a sword, and is considered (whether just by himself or by the people as a whole, I don't know) to be the absolute best fencer ever.  He eventually gets married to a woman named Houki who looks just like Nuriko, and has a son named Boushin.  Though he never gets to see him...   *sniffles*  Poor Hotohori...  He fights for Miaka until the end of the series.

Nuriko

Nuriko is guided by the constellation Hydra. At first, everyone thinks Nuriko is a girl; in fact, he is serving as a royal consort in Hotohori's palace at the beginning of the series.  Yes, that is a guy.  =P  His real name is Ryuuen Chou.  Anyway, Miaka discovers that Nuriko is a he when she hugs him in the forest and his robes fall open a bit.  The mark of the Willow is found on Nuriko's nice, strong, manly chest.  Eventually Nuriko explains that he dresses like his deceased sister Korin to try and keep some part of her alive. They were very close when they were young, and her death after being struck by a carriage hit young Ryuuen very hard.   *sniffs*  So he's not just a pervert... he's a sweet guy.  ^_^ A very sweet guy. And quite funny, too. ^_^ Especially in his female costume when he's flirting or whatever with Tama-chan, driving the poor guy crazy. And the way they fight! *giggles* Not quite as funny as Tama and Tasuki, but there are still some hilarious moments to be seen.   Nuriko's asset in battle is his brute strength.  The guy could probably lift up Hotohori's palace if he tried hard enough.  O_o  Nuriko is in love with Hotohori, but after he starts shedding his female image, he begins to fall in love with Miaka.   Well, I guess since she's the only girl around, it's only logical that all the Seishi fall for Miaka... or something like that.

Chichiri

Chichiri, a monk trained in the art of magic by Taiitsu-kun, is guided by the constellation Gemini. The mark of "Well" is on his knee. His real name is Houjyun, and, contrary to how it looks, he is also the eldest of the Seishi. My, my, he's aged well.  Chichiri lost his entire family--mother, father, older brother, and younger sister--during a flood when he was 18. In fact, it was the same flood that claimed Mitsukake's family. He wears a "happy mask" to cover the scar on the left side of his face that has permanently shut his left eye.  He recieved this scar when he killed his best friend years ago in a fight over a woman they both loved. Tragic story, really, but I don't wanna spoil it. He provides the magic and sage advice for the group. Chichiri is generally quite silly, but when he gets into a dire situation he shows his more serious side. He's the most intriguing Suzaku Seishi with the most depth of character. Chichiri is also my favorite. ^_^ Well, either him or this next guy. It's a tough call! Regardless. Chich is certainly a very interesting guy and absolutely adorable. Especially the cute li'l "no da!" he adds to the end of most of his sentences.
