Shattered Future was really something which was going to happen one way or another with one story or another. One of my main readers of Umbra, Sarah Alexander, was bored in work and suggested that we write a story. We had previously written openings for each other and asked the other to continue those stories. One story, which Sarah wrote became the opening and inspiration for the Umbra Season 2 story Memories.

So, there we both were bored and looking for something to do, so I wrote an opening line with the idea of a man out on some ice. Sarah wrote the next paragraph and eventually she introduced the idea of an ice bomb and the fact that Khaira was from the future.

I expanded a lot of the techno babble and tried to make sense of everything we had written and it grew from there with us not just writing alternate paragraphs but writing full scenes sometimes.

As it went on the story became more focused and we had a chance to introduce some character moments and settle the story down a little so it was not going to be a revelation every page. It even went so far as us actually sitting down one day and deciding what had actually happened but not why.

So, if you‘re reading this wondering what happened I can tell you. If you want to know why it happened, well I‘m sure we‘ll figure that one out in due course.
