About Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids

Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids is committed to providing the most effective, environmentally safe fluids available while optimizing the wellbore construction process and maximize production for our clients. We design the drilling and completion fluid systems as part of an overall well plan, maximizing project efficiency and minimizing wellbore damage, and have a proven record of meeting our clients' specific fluids needs. The Virtual Engineer can assist you in selecting the correct service for your drilling and evaluation application.

Completion Fluids
Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids offers a complete line of Completion Brine Fluids (CBF) as well as associated products and services.

Drill-in Fluids
Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids introduced the concept of reservoir drill-in fluids in 1994 with the PERFFLOW® system. Since then, the company has developed proprietary software to determine the optimum Particle Size Distribution (PSD) necessary to bridge pore openings that may otherwise be damaged during reservoir drill-in.

Oil & Synthetic Fluids
Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids also has been on the forefront of developing synthetic-based compliant emulsion systems for drilling in challenging downhole conditions, such as deepwater wells, while meeting stringent environmental requirements. One example of a “compliant fluid” is the SYNTEQ® CF system, which Baker Hughes developed specifically to meet discharge requirements in the Gulf of Mexico.

To compliment the proven SYN-TEQ® CF system, Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids also is introducing innovative invert emulsion systems for drilling in hostile environments, such as deep, high pressure, high temperature and highly deviated wells. The MAGMA-TEQ™ HPHT fluid is an emulsion-based system offering unique suspension properties to avoid density differentiations (barite sag) frequently encountered in deviated wells.

Water-based Fluids
Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids is a leader in water-based drilling fluid technology. The drilling industry has been working for some time to improve environmental performance and meet increasingly strict environmental standards by replacing oil and synthetic based emulsion systems with water-base fluid systems.

Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids recently introduced the PERFORMAXSM system, a third generation high-performance water-base drilling fluid whose performance emulates emulsion-based systems. Benefits include enhanced shale inhibition (via reduced pore pressure transmission), reduced clay swelling/hydration, improved cuttings integrity, high ROP, and lower torque and drag. In addition, the system’s sealing polymer component has been proven successful in preventing differential sticking and red mud losses in depleted sand.

Conductivity Endurance Technology

Field experience and recent third-party testing have led to a better understanding of important factors about maintaining long-term production following fracture treatments. Intrusion of formation material into the proppant pack can plug pore spaces, decrease the flow area and significantly decrease production. Proppant flowback leads to reduced fracture width and damage to production equipment. Diagenesis effects and the resulting proppant degradation reduce conductivity. All of these factors can be addressed by coating the proppant either during the initial treatment using SandWedge® or Expedite® services, or as a remedial treatment using either PropStoSM, CoalStim® or SandTrapSM services.

Near Wellbore Stimulation

New technologies have advanced the efficiency and cost effectiveness of near wellbore stimulation treatments. Rather than depending on the hit-and-miss techniques of placing a treating agent across the zone of interest and hoping for good results, these new technologies help assure the treatment enters the formation, either a few inches or several feet based on the requirement. Plus, it is now possible to verify in real time that the zone was treated and to make adjustments to achieve complete stimulation.

Efficient Completions

One of the primary goals of operators is to implement more efficient, simpler and more reliable solutions to their production challenges. In some cases, the more efficient approach is also less costly, which can make some previously uneconomical reserves attractive. These new Halliburton technologies may not only be more efficient, but they may also be more environmentally acceptable. A completion consists of the equipment installed in a well after it is drilled to allow hydrocarbons to be produced.

Tuned Cementing Solutions™ System

Tuned Cementing Solutions™ system consists of the analysis, design, application and evaluation of the zonal isolation requirements of each well. The result is a wide variety of slurries designed to fit the specific requirements of a particular well rather than an off-the-shelf or one-size-fits-all approach. As no two wells are exactly the same, no two cement blends should be exactly the same. Halliburton designs cement slurries based on the benefits they provide.
