Playdough Fun!

Cooked Playdough

4 cups flour
1 cup salt
food colouring
4tbsp cream tartar
1 tbsp oil
4 cups water

Mix together all dry ingredients in a saucepan off the heat, then add oil  and stir well over low heat. Add food colouring to  water and then add water slowly to mixture in saucepan  stirring constantly. The mixture will thicken suddenly. Continue to stir until playdough comes away from the sides of the saucepan and forms a ball. Remove from saucepan onto a lightly floured surface and knead well.
Store in an airtight container and it will keep for a few months.

Easy Play Dough

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tbsp oil
food colouring

Mix all ingredients, adding water, with food colouring,  slowly.Knead until workable on a floured surface. Add more flour or water as needed.
Store in an airtight container for about a week .As playdough dries out it will be very crumbly so keep away from carpets lol!

Jazz up Playdough

Expand the scope of playdough by adding texture or smell to the basic mixtures...here are some suggestions...

For scented dough add -

* vanilla essence * peppermint essence * coffee grounds * cinnamon * crushed clove of garlic * strawberry essence ** really anything with a strong smell can be added..just ensure it is non toxic and if it is in liquid form use it to substitute part or all of the water in the recipe

For textured dough add -

* bird seed *sunflower seeds * carraway seeds * sawdust * 1 packet jelly crystals (it makes a smooth elasticised dough)  * clean sand

Just for fun try adding glitter to the dough..especially black playdough!

Edible Peanut Butter Dough

1 cup peanut butter
2 cups powdered milk
1 cup honey

Mix all ingredients. Add more powdered milk if too sticky. Knead until dough is workable.
Yum! The kids can eat this when they are through.

Edible Bikkie Dough

185g butter or margarine
220g sugar
pinch of salt
1 beaten egg
2 1/2 cups plain flour
food colouring

Cream butter and sugar, add egg - beat well and mix in flour and salt. Divide into  batches as desired and colour. Let children model freely. When they are done (and if they havent eaten it already) Bake in a moderate (180C) till golden. Ideal baking thickness is about 1.5cm

Jewellry Dough

3/4 cups plain flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup cornstarch
warm water

Mix dry ingredients, gradually add water until the mixture can be kneaded in to shapes. Make beads by rolling into balls and then pierce with a toothpick. Allow to dry. Paint and string!

Candy Clay

1/3 cup margarine
1/3 cup light corn syrup
1 pound box of powdered sugar
1tsp vanilla extract
food colouring
1/4 tsp of salt

Mix all ingredients well except powdered sugar. Add sugar slowly. Knead until smooth. Sculpt then eat!

Modelling Rice

1 cup long grain rice
3 cups water
food coloring

Bring water to boil and add rice and food coloringCover and simmer on low heat for 15 mins. Uncover and continue cooking for 10 mins, stirring occassionally. Cool and use. Store covered in the fridge.
Have this outside as it can be very messy and the birds will eat the evidence : )
