Tell Vince Gilligan I said Hello!

<rad1701> to <Moderator>: Why didn't the
last epsode of the "XFiles" last year tie into
the movie?
Moderator:
Will the early episodes this year tie up those loose
ends??
VinceGilligan:
Hi everyone, and Happy Halloween!
VinceGilligan:
THe movie touched on certain things that were brought up
in the last episode of last season, but certain other
questions will be answered at the beginning of the new
season. But I'm not the person to answer those questions,
because I'm sort of a stand alone writer, and not one of
the mythology writers.

Moderator:
<tweedl> to <Moderator>: Vince: Where did
you come up with the idea for PUSHER?
VinceGilligan:
The idea for Pusher began as a scene I had cannibalized
from an old movie script I had written. It was a scene
at the end of a science fiction movie I had written
called Octane in which a secret hypnotic code word was
used by the good guy in order to make the bad guy drive
out in front of an oncoming truck. It was a pretty
complicated movie script which never got made, but the
basic idea of it wound up being the impetus for Pusher.
VinceGilligan:
And basically I just thought it was a scary idea...
basically I figured what's more scary than losing
control of your own actions and having someone else
control your life and your actions so that you would set
yourself on fire or play Russian Roulette....

Moderator:
<smithers11> to <Moderator>: are there any
funny episodes such as small potatoes and bad blood
being
Moderator:
written for this season?
VinceGilligan:
Absolutely!
VinceGilligan:
As a matter of fact, this season will have several funny
or at least "lighter" episodes. At the moment
we're trying to come up with some very dark episodes to
counter-balance.
VinceGilligan:
We've got a new writer on our staff named Jeff Bell who
on his first script for us wrote an extremely funny and
sweet story much in the vein of Don Morgan. We're happy
to have him on our staff.
VinceGilligan:
Whoops... Darin Morgan.
VinceGilligan:

Moderator:
<Cyrollan> to <Moderator>: What was the
toughest episode you ever had to write?
VinceGilligan:
That's a tough question... Lemme think....
VinceGilligan:
They're all tough!
VinceGilligan:
They're all about equally tough... probably the most fun
to write, since I can't think of an answer for the
toughest, was Small Potatoes.
VinceGilligan:
Come to think of it, there's an upcoming episode for
this season that took a long time to write.
VinceGilligan:
It's called Drive, and it will air November 15.\
VinceGilligan:
It was tough to write, but I'm proud of it. I hope the
fans like it.
VinceGilligan:

Moderator:
<cjxphile> to <Moderator>: How much freedom
does Chris C allow you in choosing the topics
Moderator:
you write about?
VinceGilligan:
A lot of freedom, which is one of the reasons it's such
a wonderful job. We basically have to go out and
generate our own ideas, and that's always the difficult
thing, coming up with these X-Files, and fighting these
deadlines that we face. But it's a great freedom he
affords us as staff writers.
VinceGilligan:
And he seldom says "no" to an idea, provided
we've thought it out properly.
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
<SculderHere> to <Moderator>: Hi Vince! Have
you adapted your writing in any way to fit the
characteristics and individual acting
Moderator:
abilities of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson?
VinceGilligan:
Good question.
VinceGilligan:
Yes, as a matter of fact.
VinceGilligan:
Having worked on the show for three seasons now, I see
the acting strengths of both David and Gillian, which
are many.
VinceGilligan:
I often write less dialogue for them in certain
situations because I know that a simple look, a glance
between the two of them, will tell the story as well as
any dialogue I could put in their mouths. Gillian in
particular has such an expressive fact that very often
she can get across very complex emotions without having
to explain them in words. David, on the other hand, is
naturally very funny, with a very dry and deadpan sense
of humor.
VinceGilligan:
So very often when I know there's a funny moment, a
funny line is called for in a scene, I'll actually leave
it out and defer to him hoping that he'll come up with a
better line on the set than I would have written. Very
often that turns out to be the case.

<wook> to <Moderator>: Vince every writer
has that super scrap of story or idea that they have
never
Moderator:
quite made whole. Do you have any creatures, mythology,
or concepts that you have want to work into a
Moderator:
X Files episode, yet havent quite found the finishing
touch for? (and share something with us about the idea
if possible).
VinceGilligan:
At the moment, I don't have any long-incubating ideas
which I'm trying to work into an episode, but for the
last two seasons, I had this crazy seed of an idea which
puzzled me for the longest time how to work it into an
episode. And finally this season, with the help of Frank
Spotnitz and John Schiban, we cracked a way to make an
episode out of it.
VinceGilligan:
It's an idea based on the movie Speed, and I'm afraid if
I say too much more or I'll give away the secret to the
episode. But it is show #2, which I mentioned before.
It's called Drive.
VinceGilligan:

Moderator:
<Palipane> to <Moderator>: Who figured to
call Scully "Scully"?
VinceGilligan:
That would be Chris Carter. The story I'm told is that
he named Scully after one of his favorite sportscaster,
Vin Scully. "Mulder," on the other hand, is
the maiden name of Chris Carter's mom.
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
<CathyB> to <Moderator>: Hello Vince - If
you could do anything you wanted with the characters of
Mulder and Scully for one episode, no limitations, where
would you take them?
VinceGilligan:
The nice thing is, Chris Carter puts so few limitations
on us already that every time you see an episode written
by myself or by Frank Spotnitz or by John Schiban,
you're basically seeing what we want to do with the
characters. In other words, we're making their
characters grow and develop week after week just in the
way that Chris and we want them to. That's why Chris is
such a good guy to work for.
VinceGilligan:
I, for instance, wouldn't want to see Scully and Mulder
actually go so far as to have a romantic relationship,
which I think the person that's in question might be
alluding to. I hope this doesn't upset too many fans,
but I personally think it would be a mistake to do that,
and lose all that wonderful sexual tension that exists
between them now. {Teresa opina: Eso son palabras del
jefe! ;oP}

Moderator:
<Elizabeth> to <Moderator>: Mr. Gilligan --
I'm a young, Southern screenwriter wannabe, so naturally
I find your success story quite inspiring. What advice
would you give to people planning careers in
screenwriting?
VinceGilligan:
First off, the old saw of "write, write, write"
VinceGilligan:
is about the best advice I can think of off the top of
my head.
VinceGilligan:
You're not really a writer until you're writing every
day. Second of all, I would recommend as a screenwriter
entering as many screenplay contests as you can find. I
got my professional start when I won a screenwriting
competition for a movie script I wrote called "Home
Fries." Ten years later, the movie has been made
and will be released soon, and I owe it all to the fact
that by entering these screenwriting contests I got my
work read by working Hollywood professionals.
VinceGilligan:
So enter every screenwriting contest you can find,
because they're usually judged by working producers,
directors, and writers, and it's a good way to network.

<Pizza-Man> to <Moderator>: What the season
premeire of the X-Files is going to be about?
VinceGilligan:
It's a big secret!
VinceGilligan:
No seriously, it will further our understanding of the
mythology, of the ongoing grand conspiracy that Mulder
and Scully are working so diligently to unravel. Aside
from that, there's not much more I can tell you about it,
unless you want to get me fired!
VinceGilligan:
.
VinceGilligan:
Expect it to be really cool though!

VinceGilligan:
Chris Carter wrote it and Kim Manners directed it, and
it's our first episode ever shot in Los Angeles. And I
think it looks darn good.
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
<Earth2XFile> to <Moderator>: How has the
move to LA affected the atmosphere of the show?
VinceGilligan:
We have a wonderful new crew who we feel lucky to be
working with. We very much miss the old crew in
Vancouver, though, because they were like a big family
to us. And they did wonderful work for five seasons.
VinceGilligan:
Obviously, with the bright sunshine of California, it is
sometimes harder to effect that classic
"X-Files" look, but our wonderful directors
and crew are up to the task.
VinceGilligan:
It's just a bit more work for them.
VinceGilligan:
But also now, we get to shoot in the desert, which we
never got to do when we were based out of British
Columbia. So we've got that going for us. Now we can
recreate Area 51, for instance.
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
<Antone> to <Moderator>: Mr.Gilligan: Can
you tell us about your recent projects? What should we
be looking out for?
VinceGilligan:
Look for the movie "Home Fries," which will be
released Thanksgiving weekend. It's movie I wrote back
in 1988, and it took a long time to make it to the
screen, but I'm extremely proud of it.
VinceGilligan:
It has nothing to do with science fiction however, but
please go see it anyway!
Moderator:
Please send your final questions for Vince Gilligan to
me, Moderator: /msg Moderator
VinceGilligan:
It stars Drew Barrymore and Luke Wilson. Luke, you may
recall, starred as Sherriff Hartwell in the episode
"Bad Blood," the vampire episode I wrote last
season.
VinceGilligan:
Aside from "Home Fries," I'm just busy writing
"X-Files" episodes. Chris, Frank, John and I
are very proud of Season 6 so far. We feel it may be the
best season yet.
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
<TrueBlue> to <Moderator>: Are the writers
suprised, flattered, amazed that the fans of the show
seem to know them as well as they know the actors?
VinceGilligan:
We are definitely surprised, flattered, and amazed!
VinceGilligan:
We all work very hard creating The X-Files, and we are
extremely proud of it, therefore it's very gratifiying
to see that so many people throughout the world enjoy it
and enjoy the characters of Mulder and Scully as much as
we do.
VinceGilligan:
And yes, the fans seem to know a lot more trivia about
the show than even I do!
VinceGilligan:
Which makes me a little embarassed... But I think it's
great.
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
<Aazari> to <Moderator>: Vince, I really
enjoyed the X-Files books "Ruins" and "Whirlwind".
Is there any chance these will make it to the small
screen?
VinceGilligan:
It's possible, although we have so many ideas, and in
particular, Chris has so many ideas for upcoming
episodes, that it may not happen for a while, if ever.
VinceGilligan:
But we're glad fans enjoy those books as well as the TV
show.
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
And as our final question...
Moderator:
<Styles> to <Moderator>: In the series are
you working with some ultimate conclusion in mind or are
you building one as you go forward ?
VinceGilligan:
I believe that Chris Carter, with the help of Frank
Spotnitz, has a pretty detailed idea of how the series
will end. I think Chris in particular is an extremely
far-ranged thinker, and has always been where The
X-Files is concerned. But you have to understand, he
plays it pretty close to the vest when it comes to
telling me about his ultimate plans for the end of the
series.
VinceGilligan:
I don't know.... maybe he thinks I'll go and blab them
all to the fans who log on to the Dominion!
VinceGilligan:
.
Moderator:
Any final words for your fans before we go unmoderated?
VinceGilligan:
Please keep watching The X-Files, and go see Home Fries
if you have a chance!
VinceGilligan:
And Happy Halloween!
Moderator:
