79-3 - Uns
Al-Vajood and the Vazeer's Daughter Al-Vard Fil-Akmaam:
Uns in Search of Rose
So the
Vazeer took the treasure and the letter and came to the king Shaamikh,
whom he saluted in the name of the king Dirbaas, delivered the letter and
the presents. When the King Shaamikh read the name of Uns, he burst into
tears and said to the Vazeer - "Oh, Where is Uns? He went from here
and now we do not know his whereabouts. You bring him to me and I will give
you double the presents you have brought for me. For now you go back to
your King and tell him that Uns has been missing for the past one year and
we don't know where he has gone." The
Vazeer said - "O Lord, My Lord said to me, "If you fail to bring
him with you, you will be degraded from the position of Vazeer and will
not enter my city." So how can I return to my city without him."
So the King asked his Vazeer Ibraaheem to go with him and search for Uns.
They
asked about him everywhere, "Did you see such and such man." but
all said, "No, We have not." till they came to the Mountain of
the Bereaved Mother. The Vazeer of the King Dirbaas asked Ibraaheem -
"Why is this called so?" He answered - "Once, in olden
times, A Geneeyaa of the Jinn of China came here. She loved a mortal very
much and in fear of her life from her own people searched all over
the earth for a place where she might hide him from them, till she found
this mountain and finding cut off from both men and Jinn, and no access to
it she brought her lover here to live. She then visited him as she wished
till she had borne him a number of children. The sailors and the merchants
heard the weeping of the children, as it were the wailing of a woman
bereaved of her babies. So they asked one another - "Is there any mother
here who is
bereaved of her children?" That is why this place is called the
Mountain of the Bereaved Mother."
They
landed there making for the castle. They knocked the gate and an eunuch
opened it. He knew the Vazeer Ibraahem, so he kissed his hand. As they
entered the courtyard, Ibraaheem found a Faqeer among the serving men.
This Faqeer was Uns, but Ibraaheem did not know him. He asked his people -
"When this man came here?" They said - "He is a merchant
who has lost his goods but could save himself." The Vazeer left him there
and went in the castle but found no trace of his daughter, so he asked the
females working there, but they also showed their ignorance saying,
"She did not like this place so she stayed here only for a short
time." Hearing this he wept and said - "There is nothing higher
than the Destiny, decreed by Allaah, nor is there any escape from that
which He has predestined."
Then
he went to the roof and found the cloth rope hanging down to the ground.
Thus he knew that she had descended from there and had fled forth. As he
turned from there he saw two birds there - a gor-crow and and an owl, he
considered them as an ill omen, so he wept more. He came down from the
roof and asked his people to search for the mistress. They searched for
her but did not find her.
When Uns
was sure that Rose has gone, he cried and fell fainted. People there
thought that he had died as he did not come to himself for a long time.
When the Vazeer could not find Uns, and even the Vazeer Ibraaheem was
distracted to find his lost daughter, he returned to his country. While
bidding the farewell to Ibraaheem the Vazeer said - "I have a mind to take
this Faqeer with me, it may be possible that the King's daughter might get
blessed by this Faqeer. After that I will send him to Isfaahaan which is
near our country." Ibraaheem answered - "As you wish."
So
both Vazeers went to their own countries, King Dirbaas' Vazeer went with
Uns who was still fainted. People loaded him on a mule and carried him for
three days. When he came to his senses, he asked - "Where am I?"
They said - "You are with the Minister of the King Dirbaas."
Then they came to the capital of the King Dirbaas. When the King was
informed about the coming of his Vazeer, he wrote to him - "If Uns
is not with you, do not come to me ever." When the Vazeer read the
letter, he became sad because he did not know that Rose was with him, nor
he knew why was he sent to search for Uns, nor he knew the King's reason
for desiring the alliance. While Uns also did not know where were they
taking him, or this Vazeer was sent to look for him, nor the Vazeer knew
that this Faqeer was Uns himself.
When
the Minister saw Uns all right, he said to him - "I was sent by the
King on an errand, I could not complete it so he has asked me not to enter
his kingdom." Uns asked - "And what is that errand?" So the
Vazeer told him the whole story. At this Uns said to him - "Do not
fear, and go boldly to your King taking me there. I will be surety for you
for the coming of Uns." At this the Vazeer got very happy and asked
him - "Is this true what you are saying?" "Yes." So
the Vazeer took him to the King.
The
king asked him - "Where is Uns?" The young man said - "I
know where is he." "He is very near to you, but tell me first,
what you will do of him, then I will bring him to you." The King said
- "This is private." Everybody left the court and he told him
the whole story. The youth said - "Robe me in rich clothes and I will
immediately bring Uns to you." They brought him a very rich dress and
as he put it on, he said - "I am Uns." and told him his whole
story in verses.
The
King exclaimed - "By Allaah, You are indeed a pair of lovers."
Then he told him the story of Rose. Uns asked - "Where is she?"
"She is with me." He called her and a Kaazee and performed their
marriage. He sent this news to the King Shaamikh also. Shaamikh wrote him
back - "Since marriage has been performed in your court, its
consummation should be at mine." Then both, Uns and Rose, went to
their own country and the King celebrated their marriage with great pomp
and show.
