81-4 - Joodar
and His Brethren:
Joodar Goes to Take
Treasure
[After
giving the direction to Joodar] The Moor threw the incense on the chaffing
dish and the water disappeared, the riverbed was open and showed up the
door of the treasure. Joodar went down to the door and knocked. He heard
the voice - Who knocks at the door of the treasure, unknowing how to solve
the secrets?" He said - "I am Joodar, the son of Umar." At this
the door opened and came a figure with a drawn sword. He said to him -
"Stretch your neck." So he stretched his neck, the figure hit him
with the sword and fell down dead.
Then
he went to the second door and did the like; and did this until he had
undone the enchantment of the sixth door; and came to the seventh door.
There came his mother saying - "I salute you, O my son." He asked - "Who
are you?" She replied - "I am your mother who bore you for nine months and
suckled you and reared you." He said - "Take off your clothes." She said -
"You are my son, how would you strip me naked?" He said - "Strip or I will
strike your head with this sword." He stretched out his hand and drew it
upon her saying - "If you do not strip, I will slay you." She took off her
all clothes but her petticoat trousers. Then she said - "Is your heart
stone?" He said - "You are right. Do not put off your trousers." As he
uttered these words she cried - "He has made default, beat him." At this
blows started falling on him like rain drops and the servants of the
treasure threw him outside the treasure. The hoard doors closed of
themselves and water of the river returned to its place.
On
the 615th Night
Abd
al-Samad took Joodar up and then repeated his invocations over him
till he came into senses. He then asked him - "What did you do?" Joodar replied -
"I did all the enchantments, till I came to my mother. I
did made her to take off her clothes but the trousers, and she said to me
- "Do you dishonor me? Because to show one's shame is
forbidden." So I left her trousers out of pity and she cried out,
"He has made default, beat him." Then they threw me out and I
do not know what happened after." The Moor asked - "Didn't
I tell you that you should not forget my directions? But now you must live
with me till this day next year."
Then
he asked his servants to load the tents etc and we came back to the city
of Faiz. Joodar lived there with him for one year more eating, drinking and wearing a new
dress everyday. Next year they again went to the same place. The Moor got
everything ready and said to Joodar - "I wish to revise my charge to
you." The Moor said - "I remember them." The Moor said -
"Keep your mind awake, and don't think that she was your mother. She
is only an enchantment in the resemblance of your mother whose purpose is
to find fault in you. Previously you came back alive, but this time you
will not be able to come back." Joodar said - "If I slip this
time, I deserve to die there."
The
Moor started his invocations till the river dried up. He went and knocked
the door and entered the hall of treasure. When he came to the seventh
door, his mother appeared before him saying - "Welcome, O my
son." But he said - "How am I your son? O cursed one,
strip." And he did not stop threatening her till she took off her all
the clothes and as soon as she did that, she was dead.
Then
he entered the hall of treasure where he saw gold lying in heaps, but he
did not pay any attention to it. Then he saw the enchanter lying on the
couch. He loosened the sword, took the ring, the Kohl-phial and the
planisphere and went forth, that a band of music sounded for him and the
servants of the treasure cried - "May you flourish with what you have
gained." And the music did not fade until he came to the Moor who
stopped his incantations, embraced him and saluted him. Joodar handed over
all the Talismaan to the Moor.
They
all came back the city of Faiz. There the Moor took out many dishes from
the saddle bags and asked Joodar to eat. He ate to his full and then Moor
ate to his full and he returned the empty dishes to the saddle bags. Then
he asked Joodar to ask for any reward without any hesitation. Joodar said
- "First I ask from Allaah, then I ask from you. You give me your
saddle bags." The Moor gave them to him saying - "Take them for
you deserve them; but if you have asked anything else also I would have
given it to you. Eat from them, you and your family, my poor fellow These
will not profit you. You have come up to here and we have promised to send
you back rejoicing, so I give you these other saddle bags full of gold and
gems and forward back to your native land. Use this gift like this - put
your hand there in, and say "O servant of these saddle bags I invoke
you by the virtue of the Mighty Names which have power over you, bring me
such a dish." And he will bring you whatever you have asked for. You
may call upon a 1,000 different dishes everyday."
He
then filled the second pair of saddle bags half with gold and half with
gems and precious stones. He then sent him off with a slave and a mule. He
said to him - "You mount the mule, the slave will go in front of you
showing the way till you reach the door of your house. You take off these
saddle bags and give this mule back to the slave and he will bring it back
to me. Do not open this secret to anyone."
