Famous London Pubs

Well what can I say about London Pubs, there are (at the last count) 1,758 and sorry to say I have not been in them all. The majority are chains pubs like the Wetherspoons, but there are a few that have a bit of history to them, for what happened there or who drunk there. I have with my friend Brian Edwards compiled a list of the top ten that are a must to visit.

1) The Blind Beggar: Situated in Whitechapel made infamous by the gangland shooting of George Cornell by Ronnie Kray on 9th March 1966. But now its one of the most relaxing places to enjoy a drink, either inside or out in the wonderful garden, a truly great place to meet new and old friends (My favourite of the 10) ( Nearest Station Whitechapel )

2) Blue Anchor: This pub is situated in Chancery Lane, and is where Winston Churchill used to enjoy a drink and a cigar during the air raids ( Nearest station Chancery Lane )

3) The Dove: This pub is situated in Hammersmith and apparently has the smallest bar in London and James Thompson penned Rule Britannia   (to hear the song) (A patriotic song) here. ( Nearest station Hammersmith )

4) The George: Situated just off Borough High Street is the only surviving galleried coaching inn, and maybe the oldest pub in London ( Nearest station London Bridge )

5) The Gun : Situated in the Docklands this pub is over 250 years old and was once a haven for smugglers, and Lord Nelson used to have a drink or two here. ( Nearest station Canary Wharf )
