Rules of Play
Rules are meant to be bent, not broken.
1. Conduct.
- The purpose of this game is to have fun! If you're not having fun, you're probably either being too serious or not doing it right.
- You must be honest. Otherwise this game won't work. If you are killed, you need to report it to the game organizer...and if you die, there will be other chances to play again, if the game does continue on our campus.
- Please use your head. You are entirely responsible for your own behavior. Do not inconvenience the general public and the other students on campus...oh and especially the Campus Police. We don't want to bother them, and we don't want them to bother us.
- Do not involve the University authorities or non players to eject or intimidate those trying to kill you. If you think someone is behaving unreasonably, contact the game organizer.
- There is to be NO physical strength or violence in this game. There is no excuse for pushing or shoving.
- Any deliberate breach of the rules will result in the player going on the wanted list, or if worse, expelled from the game.
2. How to play the game, in brief.
- Before the game starts, go to the Join page follow the instructions and e-mail the game organizer.
- When the game begins, you'll be e-mailed with your target's name, your target's room number and a general description. Try to kill that person.
- When one of your targets dies (either killed by you or someone else), you will be sent a new target.
- If you die, sent a report to shuassassins@gmail.com.
- If you don't die, and you're the last person alive, pat yourself on the back: You've won.
Rules of Engagement.
To shoot or not to shoot, is that the question?
3. Legal Targets.
It's okay to attack and attempt to kill these people.
- Your target assigned to you by the game organizer.
- Anyone presently trying to assassinate you.
- Anyone clearly holding a weapon(this doesn't apply to people who just had one but now has it hidden again).
- Anyone on the wanted or incompetent list.
If you attack anyone who isn't describe in the above, they are innocent and that will get you put on the wanted list.
The following places are out of bounds. This means that you cannot kill anyone in these places. Doing so will result you being put on the wanted list.
- Practicals, labs, classes, seminars, lectures, studios are all out of bounds.
- The Administration building, the floors of Maura Hall with classrooms, Lynch Hall, the Mckenna Center, and St. Mary's Hall are out of bounds. Teachers would not enjoy to see student squirting each other with water guns in Admin.
- Churches, chapels, synagogues, mosques, temples, stupas or any other official place of worship are also out of bounds. Your room is not an official place of worship, no matter how inventive your excuse is.
- Anyone who is at work is out of bounds.
- Any formal college events are out of bounds.
Additionally, no ranged weapons are to be used in libraries, computer labs, and any other room containing things easily damaged by water or flying objects.
4. Legal Weapons.
- Water or other squirt gun.
- Rubber bands or rubber band guns.
- Toy knives, swords, etc.
- Garrotes (used for strangling)in the form of toilet paper, silly putty, crepe paper, easily torn kleenex...anything that can break easily, we don't want to have the risk of actually strangling anyone.
- Grenades, in the form of water balloons or balloons filled with confetti.
- Stuffed animals, properly labelled.
- Anything else approved by the game organizer.
In general, weapons should not make a mess, cause harm, cause bodily or property damage, but they should inform people that they have been killed. All weapons must obviously be weapons (i.e. banana, piece of knife-shaped cardboard, etc., must be VERY CLEARLY labelled). If you aren't sure about the validity of your weapon, ask the game organizer first - otherwise, your attempt may be discounted. Body parts or hair cannot be labelled as weapons. Actual utensils cannot be used as weapons. To score a kill, the target must be hit in the torso - limb and head shots don't count (garrotes being an obvious exception to this, as they must be applied in a very particular way). There are no shields in this game, and clothing, bags and weaponry will not block incoming shots. This means that if you are hit in the back while carrying a backpack, and the shot would have hit your body had you not been wearing it, you are dead. Weapons may likewise not block shots and so hits to your weapon may count as having hit your body if they would otherwise have done so. Melee weapons, however, may block melee weapons, so as to allow for awesome sword fights without the lameness of people using huge weapons as shields. No poisioning or indirect methods of killing- go kill your own targets.
If you have weapons that look like they could be real, like squirt guns and that sort of paraphernalia, make sure they are brightly colored so they aren't mistaken for real. We'd be in a lot of trouble for that.
Also, you can use any sort of ruse to capture and kill your target, but there are somethings that you can't do.
- Don't impersonate authority. This includes maintenance workers, RA's, RTA, the Campus Police (HA!), or any Faculty or staff.
- Don't impersonate the game organizer. Even though that may not help very much.
- You may enter a target's room through open doors or windows (there are a rare few that thin people could slip in) only - no breaking in. Employing various tricks to get your target or their roommate to let you in is perfectly acceptable, though.
- You are perfectly at liberty to deny that you are an assassin. However, you are not allowed to claim that you are a dead assassin and hence harmless. You may also not lie about the status of other live assassins who are immediately present.
Non-players are not allowed to attack or kill anyone, nor should they be used as decoys. If you convince a non-player to act as such and the non-player is killed, you will be held responsible for their death, and you will be made wanted. Non-players are allowed to provide information, spread misinformation, help in planning, assist in the procurement or manufacture of weapons, or similar activities.
5. Reporting.
Like writing a paper, only a lot more fun. And BS'ing IS allowed!
Whenever you are involved in any assassins-related incident, such as successfully or unsuccessfully trying to kill another player or innocent, being attacked or killed or witnessing a killing, you should inform the game organizer at shuassassins@gmail.com as soon as you can.
Reports of the game's events will be published on the website during the game. Reports are encouraged to be dramatic and creative and may also be intentionally misleading (although outright lying is frowned upon). However, if your report is sufficiently outlandish to make it unclear what actually happened, please explain the raw facts separately to the game organizer, as he/she would like to know what's going on.
If you don't know exactly what happened, call for a "time out" or "discussion phase" with the other players involved in order to clarify who was hit, who died, etc. In general, all players involved should submit a report of every incident; this way the game organizer can correlate the reports and so ensure that the news is updated as quickly as possible. Players cannot kill one another while doing this, although please try to avoid exposing yourself to any entirely different assassins who might happen to be passing.
Pseudonyms.
- Obviously, you will wish to avoid other assassins finding out that you are playing the game and what you have been doing. For this reason, each player is allowed to select a pseudonym at the start of the game. Whenever you make a report, you may choose whether to have it appear under your real name or your pseudonym. If you do not specify, the organizer will probably assume that you intend to use your pseudonym.
- For every two assassins you kill legally, you can earn an extra pseudonym. If you wish to take advantage of this, email the organizer telling him/her that you wish to register a new pseudonym and what it is. From then on, whenever you make a report you may choose any of your pseudonyms to report under instead of your real name.
- You will not be awarded extra pseudonyms for kills you make while wanted, but wanted criminals who succeed in redeeming themselves may be given a new pseudonym to help with their rehabilitation, at the organizer's discretion. Note that while you are wanted, all of your pseudonyms will be listed on the Wanted List along with your real name.
Public Killings.
- If you kill someone in an unsubtle manner in a public place, you may be unable to avoid being noticed. For this reason, any kills made in public areas or areas like Lowe Dining Hall may result in your not being allowed to report the event pseudonymously, if there is a sufficiently large number of people around to see you. (As a rule of thumb, there need to be at least half a dozen uninvolved people in a position to clearly see you make the kill — the intent is mainly to discourage assassins from having shootouts in crowded areas.) Kills made with subtle weapons like knives will not result in your kill being witnessed in this way.
6. ...So,You're Dead.
Dead players should esentially act as non-players, but refrain from seriously affecting the game. In particular, dead players should not act as accomplices, however they may point assassins out, or pass on any information they have to other players unless it concerns the incident in which they died. Players may not get dead players to open doors for them in the same way they shouldn't get non players to do so.
7. The Wanted List.
Any players who break these rules, such as by killing or endangering innocent victims, may be declared to be "wanted". The names of all wanted criminals will be put up on the website along with their addresses and pseudonyms. Anyone on the wanted list is a valid target for anyone else in the game. If a person on the wanted list does something good for society, like eliminate a few other assassins, then they may be taken off the list at the organizer's discretion.
8. Incompetence.
Any players who do not make any attempts for a period of four days will be posted on the website, including their real name, their pseudonym(s), and where to find them. Incompetent players are legal targets to all players. Once a player makes a reported attempt, successful or unsuccessful, they are removed from the list. An attempt can include anywhere from actually killing your target, to a confrontation with them, to lurking after them. Basically, any time when you reasonably expect to kill your target, you're making an attempt.
Whew, enough with the rules. So who runs this joint?
9. The Game Organizer.
The organizer of the current game is Andrea Perkins. She can be reached at shuassasssins@gmail.com.
You can also stop by her room, if for some reason the network is down or whatever. She lives in 310 Brownlee Hall, and furthermore wishes that you don't kill people in her room, however hilarious that may be.
Any attempts to steal things from the organizer, hack the website or her computer are forbidden.
The game organizer is not playing, and any attempts on her life will put you on the wanted list. However, she does wish to play at some point and any one interested in running the game can and should contact her as well.
