By-Laws

Article I: Name
The official name of the organization is The Hands of Hope. The official colors are blue, representing hope and devotion; and orange, representing energy and encouragement.
Article II: Purpose
We are a volunteer service organization, sharing the gift of compassion, love, and friendship by reaching out to others in our society through volunteer service, hoping to make a difference.
Article III: Membership
A. There is open membership to anyone interested in joining the organization throughout the academic year.
B. All members of the organization are deemed both important and equal assets of the organization, sharing equal votes and opinions on all matters and decisions.
C. Members are held accountable for the Seton Hill University Student Handbook as well as the handbook of The Hands of Hope.
1. Dismissal from the organization may occur if a member purposely defaces or harms the name of the organization or any other members, pending on a 2/3 vote of the organization.
D. Attendance to meetings is not mandatory, however, recommended.
1. If a member cannot attend a meeting, it is asked that they be respectful and contact the secretary of the organization.
2. Only members in attendance will have voting powers.
E. Attendance to service projects
1. Members are required to attend at least two service projects per semester to maintain good standing in membership.
2. Members will wear Hands of Hope T-Shirts to all service events.
Article IV: Advisor
A. The organization is required to have one advisor, however, is entitled to more.
B. The advisor will be chosen by a vote of the organization.
1. The advisor will remain the set-advisor from year-to-year, unless he/she resigns from office or is impeached by the executive officers, and voted out by 2/3 of the organization.
2. Impeachment may only occur at the very beginning or very end of the academic year.
Article V: Officers
A. The Executive Council shall consist of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Historian, Parliamentarian, Chaplain, and Public Relations Committee.
1. President
a. Shall preside over all official meetings
b. Shall supervise all activities and projects in the best interest of Hands of Hope and Seton Hill University
c. Is a voting member of the Executive Council
d. Meets regularly with set advisor
e. Is responsible for distribution and review of all by-laws
f. Meets with Dean of Student Services upon request
2. Vice President
a. Acts as a President in official meetings where the President is absent
b. Is a voting member of the Executive Council
c. Meets regularly with the Treasurer and Advisor
d. Performs other duties assigned by the President
e. Acts as Chairperson of any committees formed by this organization
f. Meets with Dean of Student Services upon request
3. Secretary
a. Is a member of the voting Executive Council
b. Keeps the minutes of all official meetings
c. Keeps the members informed of all related occurrences dealing with the organization
d. Will make changes to all by-laws
4. Treasurer
a. Is a voting member of the Executive Council
b. Is responsible for handling the checkbook and finances, holding the position in a responsible manner
c. Meets as needed with the Vice President
d. Meets regularly with advisor, Director of Activities, and Business Office regarding financial matters
e. Performs other duties assigned by the President
5. Parliamentarian
a. Is a voting member of the Executive Council
b. Calls to order all meetings of the organization
c. Ensures all meetings are run smoothly and will maintain order throughout the meeting
d. Adjourns all meetings
e. Presides over all elections
f. Performs other duties assigned by the President
Article VI: Non-Executive Council Officers
A. Non-Executive Council Offices include those positions in which the office holders are not on the Executive Council, and thereby are not voting members of the Executive Council. However, these offices hold other special values in the organization.
1. Historian
a. Keeps records of all meetings and activities
throughout the academic year
b. Is responsible for making and continuing to update
a club scrapbook throughout the year
c. Performs other duties assigned by the President
2. Chaplain
a. Provides prayer prior to all meetings and activities
b. Is responsible for all religious gatherings and
commitments of the organization
c. Performs other duties assigned by the President
B. Officers may be removed from office during their term if they:
1. Do not adhere to the rules and regulations of Seton Hill University as well as those set by the organization.
2. Officers may only be impeached by the Executive Council
a. The organization will then take a vote
b. For an officer to be removed from office, 2/3 of total membership must vote in favor of removal
c. Replacement of an officer will be held by nomination and vote at the same meeting
d. No office may remain without an officer
e. No member may hold two offices at the same time.
Article VI: Election Process
A. Elections will be held in the spring of the academic school year.
B. Those wishing to enter office shall announce one week prior to the election meeting of their candidacy for office.
C. Elections shall be by ballot vote.
D. Only current members may run for an office.
E. Those running will prepare a speech and be ready for questions the evening of the elections.
F. Members on probation may not hold an office during that term.
Article VII: Committees
A. Committees may be appointed by the Executive Council.
B. Committees will oversee particular service projects and events.
C. Committees will report to the Vice- President of progress.
The Hands of Hope will not tolerate discrimination in any way. This includes discrimination against religion, race, age, gender, sexuality or handicap.
