Northumbria was in its earliest period split into two kingdoms, Bernicia and Deira. Sometimes a king of one of these kingdoms would claim overlordship over both, i.e., all Northumbria, with the king of the other kingdom being perhaps a subregulus. At other times it would appear that one king ruled both (all Northumbria) at once, and in the later period, Northumbria was indeed one kingdom under one king.
