The
Best Of The Web
Awards time is here. No, it's not the "Oscar" , "Grammy" or the "Emmy" awards. It's the awards for the World Wide Web where they choose the 'best of the best' of the Internet. It's the "Webby Awards". And here are the nominees and winners which are catogarized into 15 categories.
FILM |
CineMedia Site | CineMedia claims to be the Internet's largest film and media directory. One look and you won't doubt it for a second. This collection of beautifully organized, up-to-date links (more than 7,000) and listings covers TV, movies, radio, new media, and magazines. And it ranges from crass, commercial filmmakers to the most esoteric cineastes-all housed in a fabulous new interface. The deciding feature: a searchable database. You could spend days here. |
Mr. Showbiz | A classic pop culture site, Mr. Showbiz has it all: celeb interviews, TV/film/music reviews, chats, features, downloads, "star bios," and media charts-all in a tidy design. Learn how Tom Hanks feels about directing. Get the scoop on films that are starting to take off at the box office. Read probing analyses by Joe Queenen. Or play games with body parts of the cast from Friends. |
WINNER |
The IMD is the prime starting point for film info--from scholarly cinema listings to what's playing tonight in Dublin, Paris, or your local multiplex. It lists more than 70,000 films and 300,000 people--and a painless interface lets you search the whole shebang. I found every obscure title and esoteric filmmaker I looked for--including myself, as a crew member for Burden of Dreams. |
Film.com | Thirty-plus professional film critics (what a thought!) and a slew of searchable databases (current releases, home videos, TV schedules) make this site a must visit. When I asked it to list all the John Ford movies on TV this month, it did so in about 12 seconds flat. On the same bill: box office grosses, film festivals, downloadable trailers, a chat area, and a store of movie memorabilia. Thirty thumbs up. |
E!Online | A widely recognized and respected veteran in Hollywood, E! has a Webpage-and a helluva resource at that. A multimillion-dollar jointventure with C|NET, E! assembles a vast collection of news and gossip, previews, reviews, interviews, a sweepstakes, and humorous takes onshowbiz (such as counting nude celebs in mainstream magazines andserving up "Melrose: Who's Done Whom"). The high-profile staff includes Lew Harris from People, columnist Ben Stein, and gossip columnist Ted Casablanca. Fans of Mr. ShowBiz: Keep your eyes open for the new pundits in town. |
