Wow......a very big reason why the web now means something more to me. I never would have guessed someone would have set this up. I was just wondering about the ship's where abouts in "these days". I was near Coronodo Island 4 years ago and thought I m ght have seen OE-3 tied up there. When I served the Seattle was home ported in Norfolk. I wonder right now if the USS Seattle is in the Persian Gulf. Thanks, Roger Dieterich, KA4LDN

Dear Bill, Thank you for designing the U.S.S. Seattle Web Page. I really liked being on that ship but unfortunately I was injured on it due to a shipboard accident that happened over in the Sardinia area. We had a leak in one of our chemical holding tanks (heads) that leaked in the storage area where the detergent for the mess deck trays were kept and a sort of chemical-thermal reaction took place and it caused it to explode which caused us to lose our aft steering mechanisms and two of my shipmates were burnt pre ty badly and one other guy broke his arm when the explosion threw across the mess deck into a nearby Coke machine. I was responding to the general quarters drill and was proceeding to my repair locker when I noticed a white mist coming down the passageway which I took to be steam. As it turned out it was a chlorine gas cloud and it really did a number on my lungs. I didn't think to much about it at the time and I went to Corry Station Pensacola to study cryptologic maintenance as I wasn't exhibiting any re l problems breathing. It wasn't until I was going to class one day that one of the instructors told me to go to the clinic as I "didn't look too good". what happened was I was experiencing a full asthma attack brought on by the exposure to the trees that urrounded the base. I was told to see the medical officer in the morning. Before the daily muster, my roommate noticed I wasn't breathing too well and that "I really looked bad". He ran and got the nearest person which happened to be a chief and the chief drove me to the clinic. I then was taken by ambulance to the Naval Hospital whereupon I was medically discharged due to a asthmatic condition at 30% disabled and placed on the tdrl (Temporary Disabled Retired List)list and I made my way back to Denver Col rado. I went to the VA and was increased to 60% disabled. Due to steroids given to me for my asthmatic condition, I have developed diabetes that increased my disability to 70% disabled. I was then placed on the Permanently Disabled Retired List. I was the told that I have COPD which is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and due to recent hospitalizations, I am now rated at 100% disabled at have to use supplemental oxygen on a 24 hour basis. Despite my health condition, I hold no anger towards the Navy r the men aboard the U.S.S. Seattle. I enjoyed my time in the Navy and hoped to make it my career. We can't predict what will happen in our lives and if you get knocked down, make sure you get up more times than you go down. Bill, sorry this is so long, b t I was wondering if you could help me obtain a ball cap of our ship as my old one has definitely seen better days and a photo of our ship so I can show my stepdaughter and new grandson the ship I served on. If you could tell the prices of the above items I'd really appreciate it. Sincerely, Jon Sutton 522 Loomis Circle Colorado Springs Colorado 80906 719-579-0014 meu642@kktv.com

I started out in RASE Division (what a shock!), then on to A-Gang. Thought it would never end, but somehow those times have turned into fond memories... Guess it has to do with the good friends I worked with. I'm still in touch with several of the guys from A-Gang, so drop me a line if you're looking for someone, maybe I can help.

We seemed to always be at sea, many times to make up for the USS Detroit which seemed to always be in repair. I thought I would never get off but in looking back, it was probably the most important experience of my life. A lot of great buddies and somet mes wonder where they are now. Several memorable experences....we almost hit the Yorktown Bridge as we lost power....a forth of July picnic on the fantail with helo rides in the middle of the atlantic on the way to the Med...and for some reason I do not ven want to fathom, we seemed to eat rabbit about 5 times a week.

I too served on the USS Seattle from 1969 - 70. I was a part of the ogriginal crew in Bremerton Washington. Actually we all assembled in San Deigo for underway training and then flew enmass to Seattle. At that time She was still in the Bremerton dry docks and the entire crew was housed on base until we could move on-board. Our Commissioning Cruise - passing before the City of Seattle was glorious; with large tugs shooting water into the air and escourting us through the harbor. Then there were FLY-BYs while we all stood along the decks in Dress Whites. The City of Seattle gave the ship its On-board Desalination Equipment that could produce potable water from sea water --- plus many fine memories. I'm a grandfather now and would enjoy reminiscing with fellow "Plank Owners."
