I was in repair 3 team at the time of the explosion that jon sutton talks about. I helped carry the EN1 in charge of aft steering to sick bay. I then was part of the investigating crew that went into aft steering. The actual cause of the explosion was a t
g had rammed the hull outboard of a supply storeroom where calcium hypoclorite [powdered clorine] was stored. The clorine was used for water purification. A fuel line in the storeroom was cracked from the impact
and leaked for a couple of weeks after that.
Until the fuel contacted small quart bottles of the clorine causing an explosion that blew out the
wall between the storeroom and aft steering.
The blast had enough power to launch a small hatchet that had been laying in the room and cut a gash in the solid steel ram in the steering unit
To make the problem worse the firefighting water being sprayed into the storeroom from above was raising the fuel level causing more bottles to explode. It was a long hard nerve-wracking day to be onboard the worlds biggest frag grenade, at a fuel pier, a
d on fire. My thanks go especially to
the EM'S who after turning off the power to aft steering KEPT it off while I and others were standing in a foot of water and fuel.

Hey All. I reported to the Seattle out of DP "A" school in 1977. Served aboard the ship long enough to make 2 if not 3 Med cruises. It seemed as though it would never end but it did and now I have great memories of my time in the service. I visited the sh
p in 1999 down in Earl N.J. Weapons Station Memorial Day. That's where her home port is. Thanks for the great Web site.

What a cool page! Considering that you were one of a very select few with an actual photo op, great shot of NSSMS's 1st launch. I remember regretting not being on the signal bridge to view the launch. In retrospect, I'm gratefully proud to have manned a r
dar console. I stumbled onto this page, and there's much more to write than my time allows at this moment. Really great to be reminded of old friendships. Thank You, Bill, & Technology.

I signed this guestbook a long time ago, but my email address has changed several times since. I've seen my good friend Sam Henry from Kentucky and my other shipmate Vic Scoggin from Tennessee. They like myself miss our youth and comraderie. Speaking o
which, I just saw the movie "The many faces of Tom Ripley" which takes place in Italy. I remember some good times there...My wife says, did you see Rome, unfortunately most of my time was spent in the blacked out areas of town, I'd like to go back somed
y and not be blinded by alcohol. Good old Napoli!
