4. Opening the box

Previous section...

My first reaction when I saw the UPS box was: "God... this is huge!".  I mean, for a tiny watch, they have sure used a pretty large box to pack it in.  I guess this was where a chunk of my shipping charges go to.

As expected, the box was well lined with protective fluff to minimize damage to its contents.  When extracted, the Matsucom onHand PC box was about a third of the UPS box.  I liked the design: it smacks of Japanese packaging styling and looks like the Ruputer box that I saw on someone's website (sorry, can't remember where though).  The watch peeps through its plastic enclosure near the center of the box, so that you can see its colour and design.  I have scanned in the front and back covers of the onHand PC box so that you know what I am talking about, and the pictures are at the beginning of this review.  No complains there, except that the box made mention of the inclusion of a so-called "millenium watch" in the built-in programs which I have never found either in the factory-configured watch or on the CDROM.  Oh well, not that I needed it anyway.  Perhaps Matsucom figured that by the time the onHand PC goes main-stream, the millenium is way past its conception...

Anyway, having sliced through the cellophane tape at one end of the box, I spilled out the contents.  The watch, and its matching docking station and battery key-chain resides within a plastic mould, while the manuals and CDROM is stored separately in a cardboard enclosure.

There are 3 software manuals: 2 by Matsucom (onHand PC user manual, and PC software user manual) and a small third manual from CompanionLink Software (which is used for linking with other Windows-based PIM software).  The Matsucom manuals were very well written, professional and thorough.  I did not even look at the CompanionLink manual until much later, when I realized that it was a manual :-).  But by then, I had no need for it.
